While some analyse these ‘multiethnolects’ as youth styles, we take a variationist approach to an emerging ‘Multicultural London English’ (MLE), asking: (1) what features characterise MLE? (2) at what age(s) are they acquired? (3) is MLE vernacularised ? (4) when did MLE emerge, and what factors enabled its emergence? We argue that innovations in the diphthongs and the quotative system are generated from the specific sociolinguistics of inner-city London, where at least half the population is undergoing group second-language acquisition and where high linguistic diversity leads to a feature pool to select from. -
Obituary Professor Dr Abul Khair Muhammad Siddiq
Obituary Professor Dr Abul Khair Muhammad Siddiq (1923-2018) It is difficult for one to write an obituary of a person who had been one's teacher, colleague, friend, philosopher and guide. The person was no other than the celebrated gentleman physicist Professor Dr Abul Khair Muhammad Siddiq commonly known as A.K.M.Siddiq who had an eventful long life and had witnessed many developments in Physics in the Curzon Hall starting from the golden days of S. N. Bose of whom he was a student. Prof Siddiq produced dozens of very successful physicists who have been highly placed in different stations in Academic and Administrative Fields. And he always tried to be in touch with them as far as possible. My interactions with Prof Siddiq have been in several fields: as a student, as a colleague and finally as a family friend. I first met him in the mid 60's when I registered myself for Physics Studies in the Dhaka University (1956-1960). I still remember the day when Dr Siddiq entered our class for the first time as a young smart teacher on return from Saskachuan University, Canada where he obtained his Ph.D in Nuclear Physics. We learnt later that his first appointment in life was not as a university lecturer but as an officer first in the Patent Office in Calcutta (now Kolkata) and then after the partition of India in1947 in the Patent Office in Karachi in Pakistan. He did not relish this job as his heart and mind had always been craving for research and teaching. -

DEPARTMENT OF BOTANY University of Dhaka Dhaka-1000 BACHELOR OF SCIENCE WITH HONOURS (BS HONS) AND MS DEGREE PROGRAM IN BOTANY 1. Introduction The Department of Botany was established as Biology Department under the University of Dhaka in 1939 by the active leadership of Professor Panchanan Maheshwari. At that time, the department consisted of Botany and Zoology and the students were enrolled under BSc pass degree program. The students of the then Bengal Agriculture Institute (At present, Sher-e-Bangla Agriculture University, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka-1207) were also taught for the BSc pass degree in the same Biology Department. At the beginning, the department was housed in the neighboring Chemistry Department, situated in the Curzon Hall Campus of the University of Dhaka. The department was later on shifted to the present building. In 1948, the first MSc program in Botany was started and the first batch of the students were awarded MSc in 1950. Professor Panchanan Maheshwari, the founder head returned to India in 1949 and then Dr. Majeed Ahmd, Reader of Biology, took the charge. Dr. Ahmad left the department in December. 1951. Professor Girija Prashanna Majumdar, Professor of Botany of Presidency College, Calcutta, India was appointed as the Head of the Department. Professor Majumder started BSc (Hons) course in Botany in 1952. Under this new program, tudents of Botany were first awarded BSc (Hons) degree in 1954. On the Executive Council of Dhaka University at its meeting on 24 April, 1954 decided to establish separate Departments of Botany and Zoology by splitting the Department of Biology. -

Welcome To The Workshops Dear Colleague, Due to increasing demands for education and training in ultrasonography, World Federation for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology has established its First "WFUMB Center of Excellence" in Dhaka in 2004. Bangladesh Society of Ultrasonography is the First WFUMB Affiliate to receive this honor. The aims of the WFUMB COE is to provide education and training in medical ultrasonography, to confer accreditation after successful completion of necessary examinations and to accumulate current technical information on ultrasound techniques under close communication with other Centers, WFUMB and WHO Global Steering Group for Education and Teaching in Diagnostic Imaging. 23 WFUMB Center of Education Workshop of the World Federation for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology will be held jointly in the City of Dhaka on 6 & 7 March 2020. Christiansen ABSTRACT OF DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History in the Graduate School of Northeastern University September, 2012 3 ABSTRACT This dissertation examines the history of East Pakistan/Bangladesh’s student movements in the postcolonial period. The principal argument is that the major student mobilizations of Dhaka University are evidence of an active student engagement with shared symbols and rituals across time and that the campus space itself has served as the linchpin of this movement culture. The category of “student” developed into a distinct political class that was deeply tied to a concept of local place in the campus; however, the idea of “student” as a collective identity also provided a means of ideological engagement with a globally imagined community of “students.” Thus, this manuscript examines the case study of student mobilizations at Dhaka University in various geographic scales, demonstrating the levels of local, national and global as complementary and interdependent components of social movement culture. The project contributes to understandings of Pakistan and Bangladesh’s political and social history in the united and divided period, as well as provides a platform for analyzing the historical relationship between social movements and geography that is informative to a wide range of disciplines. -

World Englishes: Variations Or Deviations?
Journal of Education and Social Sciences, Vol. 9, Issue 2, (February) ISSN 2289-9855 2018 WORLD ENGLISHES: VARIATIONS OR DEVIATIONS? SYED MAZHARUL ISLAM ABSTRACT The English language has grown as a global language or lingua franca among world communities and as many localized varieties as well around the world. Most of these Englishes, however, are marked by phonological, morphosyntactic and discourse deviations from Englishes spoken in countries like UK, Ireland, USA, South Africa, New Zealand, Australia, Anglophone Canada, and some Caribbean territories, referred to as the Inner Circle where the language is used as the first or primary national language. Crossculturally, the non-native, non-standard varieties of English are likely to offer communication problems to the interlocutors with respect to intelligibility, comprehensibility, interpretability, and, last but not least, acceptability. This paper is rooted in the belief that if grammaticality vis-à-vis correct word order and word form and appropriate word choice and discourse conventions, as established as standards in the Inner Circle and used in the Inner Circle, are not adopted as the norm, the aforementioned problems may arise. The paper gives examples of standard English, written and spoken; next, it provides samples of deviant Englishes from diverse English speaking contexts which are likely to result in mutual unintelligibility. Phonological and morphosyntactic aberrations, and inappropriate discourse styles of these Englises are examined and discussed and then a point is made and justified through discussion that there is no alternative to the teaching of non-localized, standard spoken and written English characterized by grammatically correct forms and acceptable discourse norms to learners of English for crosscultural communication, no matter to which English speaking community they belong. -

These varieties represent locality and yet have high international intelligibility. English as an Internaional Language ・represent respective locality rather than conformity to Anglo-American norm ・are used for cross-cultural communication ・express oneself, his/her society, cultural traditions ・Indian Eng., Nigerian Eng.,… still English sharing the basic structures ・not a single, monolithic standard English EIL an amalgamation of regional standard Englishes, which in turn consist of a loose league of naional Englishes Regional Standard Englishes Anglo-American Eng Euro-English Asian English Latin English Arab English African English Euro-English Nordic English Romance English Danish English French English Finnish English Italian English Norwegian English Spanish English Germanic English German English Dutch English Asian English Southeast Asia South Asia Indonesian English Bangladeshi English Filipino English Indian English Singaporean English Pakistan English Thai English Sri Lankan English etc. etc. EIL acrolect-like formal Englishes not Cockney, Ebonics, Manglish, Singlish, Taglish,… reflect local beliefs, views, values, attitudes, ways of thinking , ideologies Language and culture are inseparable. Having spread to many parts of the world, English has come to be an integral part of non-Anglo-American cultures as well. Intra-national use Indian Eng., Nigerian Eng., Malaysian Eng. established, institutionalized, and codified as varieties (endonormative standard) Don’t tease her. -
