7 Singapore: Rapid Improvement Followed by Strong Performance Singapore is one of Asia’s great success stories, transforming itself from a developing country to a modern industrial economy in one generation. During the last decade, Singapore’s education system has remained consistently at or near the top of most major world education ranking systems. This chapter examines how this “tiny red dot” on the map has achieved and sustained so much, so quickly. From Singapore’s beginning, education has been seen as central to building both the economy and the nation. The objective was to serve as the engine of human capital to drive economic growth. The ability of the government to successfully match supply with demand of education and skills is a major source of Singapore’s competitive advantage. Other elements in its success include a clear vision and belief in the centrality of education for students and the nation; persistent political leadership and alignment between policy and practice; a focus on building teacher and leadership capacity to deliver reforms at the school level; ambitious standards and assessments; and a culture of continuous improvement and future orientation that benchmarks educational practices against the best in the world. Early Years Foundation Stage Guidance Introduction Every child deserves the best possible start in life and the support that enables them to fulfil their potential. Children develop quickly in the early years and a child’s experiences between birth and age five have a major impact on their future life chances. A secure, safe and happy childhood is important in its own right. Good parenting and high quality early learning together provide the foundation children need to make the most of their abilities and talents as they grow up. (Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage DfE March 2017) The Early Years Foundation Stage applies to children from birth to the end of Reception. In our school children can join us at the beginning of the school year in which they are four, and if we have places some children are able to join us the term after they turn three. Key Stage One begins for our children at the beginning of Year One. We believe that the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum is important in its own right and for preparing children for later schooling. It reflects the fact that children change and develop more rapidly in the first five years than at any other stage of their life. In order to ensure continuity and to enable each child to reach their full potential, we make a clear commitment to ensuring that the transition between pre-school and Nursery and Reception is made smoothly, so laying secure foundations for future learning. The early years education we offer is based upon The Early Years Foundation Stage statutory framework leading to the Early Learning Goals, which establish targets for most children to reach by the end of the Early Years Foundation Stage. -

Understanding the Foundation Stage Introduction The Foundation Stage Years 1 & 2 in the primary school The purpose of this guidance is to provide information related to good practice in the Foundation Stage. It outlines the approach to learning, teaching and assessment and should be used to support the review, development and improvement of existing provision and practice. Young children come to school from a variety of different backgrounds, having had a range of diverse learning experiences at home and for most, some form of pre-school education. The Foundation Stage aims to build on these learning experiences by providing children with an appropriate learning programme to develop their dispositions to learn and to provide them with the skills and competencies they will need to succeed in school and future life. The Foundation Stage also endorses good early years practice where teachers have more flexibility in terms of what they teach. -

Following the Conservative Party’s compelling victory, the Government now holds a majority of 80 seats in the House of Commons. The life sciences sector is high on the Government’s agenda and Boris Johnson has pledged to make the UK “the leading global hub for life sciences after Brexit”. With its strong majority, the Government has the power to enact the policies supportive of the sector in the Conservatives 2019 Manifesto. All in all, this indicates a positive outlook for life sciences during this Government’s tenure. Lead Non-Executive Director – Department for Education Introduction The Department for Education’s (DfE) aim is to ensure world-class education and care that allows every child and young person to reach his or her potential, regardless of background. Over the next four years, the Department is leading an ambitious and wide-ranging programme of reform across early years, schools, 16-19, and children’s social care, building on and extending the changes of the last Parliament. We are expanding the academies and free school programme to empower professionals on the frontline, reforming the curriculum and qualifications so that they represent an international gold standard, and ensuring that young people leave school with the knowledge, skills and resilience to succeed in modern Britain. At the same time we are reforming adoption, fostering and children’s services so that they work quickly and effectively to transform the life chances of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged young people. These changes set a challenge for the organisation itself. We delivered significant organisational change in 2010-15 and halved administrative expenditure in real terms over this period. With substantial resources allocated to our priorities in the 2015 spending review, our focus for 2015-20 is on ensuring the Department has the capability and capacity it needs to implement the Government’s strategic priorities. Setting the right conditions for success in education and children’s services means becoming increasingly effective in how we deliver reform: transforming the way we go about our work in order to help leaders in the education and social care systems do likewise. -

Health promoting messages can be reinforced throughout the most influential stages of children’s lives, enabling them to develop lifelong sustainable attitudes, behaviours and skills. The health and wellbeing of school staff, families and community members can also be enhanced by programmes based in schools. Oral health is fundamental to general health and wellbeing. A healthy mouth enables an individual to speak, eat and socialize without experiencing active disease, discomfort or embarrassment. Poor oral health impacts on children’s confidence, language and personal, social and emotional development. Tackling poor oral health is a priority for Public Health England (PHE) under the national priority of ensuring that every child has the Best Start in Life. -

Each year the Zest festival highlights the cultural contribution of a country along the VOC trading route. in 2014 we will focus on the countries now known as india, indonesia and Sri lanka, and their connections to the VOC and to Western australia.
