2. “LETTER FROM THE RECTORY” Dear Friends, Many of us are living longer than previous generations. Assuming that we continue to enjoy reasonably good health, will our latter years be ‘Indian Summer’ days or times of despondency, regret and introspection? A key to a fruitful old age is keeping active; some of the regular congregation of St. Michael’s Church, well into their tenth decades, are testimony to that. We shall do well however to better Evelyn Grant. She and her husband were missionaries in India between the wars working amongst five mountain tribes. She was widowed at the age of 50 and she was expected to return to England. However she carried on the work by herself until the age of 70. Her mission board then refused to allow her to stay on – at her age she was a liability – but at her farewell party she revealed that she had higher orders to follow! She’d already built a shack to live in. She had a horse that she rode on as she travelled from village to village sharing the Gospel. After five years, she fell off her horse and broke her hip. Her son, by then a world-renowned surgeon, said ‘Surely it’s time to call it a day.” She refused, and continued for another 18 years! Then aged 93, she could no longer ride a horse so some men in the village carried her on a stretcher as she continued to bring the good news of Jesus to the poorest of the poor. That lasted for another two years before she breathed her last. By this stage, all five of the unreached tribes and two others had come to a living Christian faith. Her son Paul, said of his mother, “This is how to grow old. Allow everything else to fall away until those around you see only love.” And as her grandson, Simon Guillebaud, himself a fearless missionary in Burundi, put it, ‘She died, but she never retired; Granny just graduated.’ It was Evelyn Grant’s strong Christian faith kept her going to the end. Can we say with St. Paul, writing to the Christians in Corinth, ‘Therefore we do not lose heart, though outwardly we are wasting away yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day’ (2 Corinthians 4:16)? James Campbell

3. Churchwardens’ Notes – August Time flies and it seems that no sooner than we had written the last notes then the next ones have become due. After a very successful fête at the end of last month, the holiday season is now in full swing. We hope that all of you who have been away have returned suitably refreshed. James , our new rector, and Mary his wife appear to have settled in at the Rectory, and we are happy to say that 'normal service' is being resumed! The family barbeque at the Rectory on 11th September, after an All Age 11.00 a.m. service, is the next date for your diaries, and we hope that as many of you as possible will be able to attend. Richard Carden and Antony Cumberland

The outstanding, and thought provoking, sculptures present ten over life-size darkly robed figures as they witness the struggle of a young man to carry an older man on his shoulders and they speak strongly of current issues and the plight of refugees. I know it's a long way to our Cathedral but I feel sure the effort of getting there for any reason would be well rewarded. Please get in touch with me if you need more information about our Cathedral or its events. Sheila Jones Cathedral Link 01892 864117
