  • Adventure Comics and Youth Cultures in India
ADVENTURE COMICS AND YOUTH CULTURES IN INDIA This pioneering book presents a history and ethnography of adventure comic books for young people in India with a particular focus on vernacular superheroism. It chronicles popular and youth culture in the subcontinent from the mid-twentieth century to the contemporary era dominated by creative audio-video-digital outlets. The authors highlight early precedents in adventures set by the avuncular detective Chacha Chaudhary with his ‘faster than a computer brain’, the forays of the film veteran Amitabh Bachchan’s superheroic alter ego called Supremo, the Protectors of Earth and Mankind (P.O.E.M.), along with the exploits of key comic book characters, such as Nagraj, Super Commando Dhruv, Parmanu, Doga, Shakti and Chandika. The book considers how pulp literature, western comics, television programmes, technological developments and major space ventures sparked a thirst for extraterrestrial action and how these laid the grounds for vernacular ventures in the Indian superhero comics genre. It contains descriptions, textual and contextual analyses, excerpts of interviews with comic book creators, producers, retailers and distributers, together with the views, dreams and fantasies of young readers of adventure comics. These narratives touch upon special powers, super-intelligence, phenomenal technologies, justice, vengeance, geopolitics, romance, sex and the amazing potentials of masked identities enabled by navigation of the internet. With its lucid style and rich illustrations, this book will be essential reading for scholars and researchers of popular and visual cultures, comics studies, literature, media and cultural studies, social anthropology and sociology, and South Asian studies. Raminder Kaur is Professor of Anthropology and Cultural Studies in the School of Global Studies at the University of Sussex, UK.

Namastey! Presenting Indian Comics Fandom Magazine second issue of 2012 (you can call it December 2012 edition). As the year draws to a close, let’s recap the events of the last quarter of Indian Comic Industry. 2012 witnessed many comic & animation related events including comic cons (India) organized in Delhi, Bangalore and Mumbai with special comic launch events by comic publications as well as independent writers-artists. Theme of this issue of ICF is independent comic creators-publishers…who are ‘almost’ as good as comic publishers with commercial success and huge fan following. ICF second edition also covers Mumbai Film & Comic Con, Nagraj Janmotsav (5), iVigilante Project, Readers Choice Poll-Award for Best Online Promotion (with stats & analysis), Featured article, featured artists and interview with author Kshitish Padhy. Though with almost 30 pages less December issue is better than the first issue (October 2012) of Indian Comics Fandom Magazine. Why? Kyoki Editing karne mey kaafi time laga pehle se. Cheers! Enjoy! • List of Superhero Debuts
List of SuperHero debuts The following is a list of the first known appearances of various superhero fictional characters and teams. A superhero (also known as a super hero) is a fictional character "of unprecedented physical prowess dedicated to acts of derring-do in the public interest."[1] Since the debut of the prototypal superhero Superman in 1938, stories of superheroes — ranging from brief episodic adventures to continuing years-long sagas — have dominated American comic books and crossed over into other media. A female superhero is sometimes called a superheroine or super heroine. By most definitions, characters need not have actual superhuman powers to be deemed superheroes, although sometimes terms such as costumed crimefighters[2] are used to refer to those without such powers who have many other common traits of superheroes. 1850-1900 Penny Dreadful Character / Team / Year Debuted Creator/s First Appearance Series George A. Franklin Frazier struck a very different note from that of the euphoria of middle-class arrival which had been sounded in the contributions to The New Negro (1925), an anthology of writings by an earlier generation of African-American intelligensia: When the opportunity has been present, the black bourgeoisie has exploited the Negro masses as ruthlessly as have whites. As the intellectual leaders in the Negro community, they have never dared to think beyond a narrow opportunistic philosophy that provided a rationalisation for their own advantages... The masses regard the black bourgeoisie as simply those who have been “lucky in getting money” which enables them to engage in conspicuous consumption..

It is a product of the culture and it interacts with the culture by through its stories. Today, comics are becoming an integral part of the book stores and competing with the Subir Dey with Prasad Bokil novels and literature of similar standards. The characters from the comic books are transferred to the live ac- DoD, IIT Guwahati tion screen and to different forms of merchandise. In totality, comics make a significant part of the pop-culture and provide a window to reflect upon the world around. However, since its birth, comics have always remained a form of subversive art. Its status has been considered as subaltern as compared to the ‘high-art’. Comics and its creators has been a subject of critical adverse comments and unacknowledgement throughout the history. It is not a surprising fact that both painting and comics employ common tools for expression. The space, images, text and panels all become a part of a 21st century conceptual artist working in a range of media. The visual styles of art are evident in comics and vice-versa.

  • That Inking Feeling
ThatThat inkinginking feelingfeeling few decades ago, the Indian comics scene was burgeoning. The art may have been simple, and most stories and characters lifted straight from American comics, but lending libraries were A important social hubs in cities and small towns. Regional comics and Indian superheroes made reading entertaining for kids across the country. Eventually, comic books lost out to TV and movies, going underground and retreating from the metros. But for the last couple of years – fuelled in part by a crop of animation grads and social media marketing – there’s a new breed of comics creators emerging. It’s not all great yet, but it’s all happening: independent artists, boutique studios, international tie-ups, and rumours of DC entering the fray. And this time around, comics aren’t just for kids. In the next few pages, we get nostalgic about the old legends, look out for promising new publishers (most of whom will be at the second Comic Con India) and meet the fans. While in ancient times, the women were accepted as the housewives, they were accorded some rank of decency too. Sadly enough to our realization when the women have stood up to be the homemaker, attached to this independent image now is indecency and inappropriateness assigned by the obnoxious minds of the society. This paper is an attempt to bring forward the ill projection of the women in one of the far reaching forms of media i.e. Comics. KEYWORDS : Derogatory Portrayal, Indian Comics, Prejudiced Media, Women Empowerment I. INTRODUCTION “How important it is for us to recognize and celebrate our heroes and she-roes!” [1] -Maya Angelou, African American Poet It has been a long existing concern as far as the status of women in India is concerned. Over the decades the women in India have not been given the right to equality to men. India is a country where the male is highly revered. It is a male dominated society where women are considered as subordinate and inferior to men. The constitution of India recognizes equal rights for men and women, in practice this is a rare sight though.

  • Postcolonial Responses to the Western Superhero: a Study Though Indian
ISSN 2249-4529 Lapis Lazuli An International Literary Journal WWW.PINTERSOCIETY.COM VOL.5 / NO.1/SPRING 2015 Postcolonial Responses to the Western Superhero: A Study though Indian Nonsense Literature ANURIMA CHANDA Jawaharlal Nehru University ______________________________________________________________________________ Abstract The idea of a super-being has always existed in mythology/religion and the folklores of most cultures. However, the superhero figure, as we understand it in the modern sense, literally began with the birth of Superman in the American comic book industry around the 1930s during the time of the Great Depression. It has grown up in stages but has always been regarded as having set a standard model for the genre. India, too, was influenced by the immense popularity of the genre in the west and introduced them in the country through the Indian comic book industry. Beginning with translations of the western modes, followed by close imitations, it finally developed its own superheroes known for their marked difference from the central model. There 68| P a g e VOL.5 / NO.1/SPRING 2015 also exists a third bunch of superheroes under Indian Nonsense Literature, who neither emulate nor resist the western central model. Instead, they use their inherent subversive nature to bring about a rupture in the dominant centre by challenging its sanctity. My paper attempts to read this phenomenon through the nonsense superheroes of Putu and Vivekas the Great, to show how they bring about a collapse of the circle itself and do away with the centre-margin divide. Keywords: Superhero, Comic Books, Nonsense Literature, Centre, Margin ______________________________________________________________________________ Introduction It was with great confusion that I had walked out of Krrish 3 - the second instalment of Rakesh Roshan's Krrish superhero movie series.
