Classics / WAGS 23: Second Essay Responses Grading: I replaced names with a two-letter code (A or B followed by another letter) so that I could read the essays anonymously. I grouped essays by levels of success and cross-read those groups to check that the rankings were consistent. Comments on the assignment: Writers found all manner of things to focus on: Night, crying, hospitality, the return of princes from the dead (Hector, Odysseus), and the exchange of bodies (Hector, Penelope). Here are four interesting and quite different responses: Essay #1: Substitution I Am That I Am: The Nature of Identity in the Iliad and the Odyssey The last book of the Iliad, and the penultimate book of the Odyssey, both deal with the issue of substitution; specifically, of accepting a substitute for a lost loved one. Priam and Achilles become substitutes for each others' absent father and dead son. In contrast, Odysseus's journey is fraught with instances of him refusing to take a substitute for Penelope, and in the end Penelope makes the ultimate verification that Odysseus is not one of the many substitutes that she has been offered over the years. In their contrasting depictions of substitution, the endings of the Iliad and the Odyssey offer insights into each epic's depiction of identity in general. Questions of identity are in the foreground throughout much of the Iliad; one need only try to unravel the symbolism and consequences of Patroclus’ donning Achilles' armor to see how this is so. In the interaction between Achilles and Priam, however, they are particularly poignant.

  • The Wesleyan Enlightenment
The Wesleyan Enlightenment: Closing the gap between heart religion and reason in Eighteenth Century England by Timothy Wayne Holgerson B.M.E., Oral Roberts University, 1984 M.M.E., Wichita State University, 1986 M.A., Asbury Theological Seminary, 1999 M.A., Kansas State University, 2011 AN ABSTRACT OF A DISSERTATION submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Department of History College of Arts and Sciences KANSAS STATE UNIVERSITY Manhattan, Kansas 2017 Abstract John Wesley (1703-1791) was an Anglican priest who became the leader of Wesleyan Methodism, a renewal movement within the Church of England that began in the late 1730s. Although Wesley was not isolated from his enlightened age, historians of the Enlightenment and theologians of John Wesley have only recently begun to consider Wesley in the historical context of the Enlightenment. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the complex relationship between a man, John Wesley, and an intellectual movement, the Enlightenment. As a comparative history, this study will analyze the juxtaposition of two historiographies, Wesley studies and Enlightenment studies. Surprisingly, Wesley scholars did not study John Wesley as an important theologian until the mid-1960s. Moreover, because social historians in the 1970s began to explore the unique ways people experienced the Enlightenment in different local, regional and national contexts, the plausibility of an English Enlightenment emerged for the first time in the early 1980s. As a result, in the late 1980s, scholars began to integrate the study of John Wesley and the Enlightenment. In other words, historians and theologians began to consider Wesley as a serious thinker in the context of an English Enlightenment that was not hostile to Christianity.

  • General Index
SCIENCE & SOCIETY GENERAL INDEX VOLUMESI-XXV (19361961) Part I: Author, Subject and Title Part II: Books Reviewed SCIENCE & SOCIETY, INC. New York 1965 Copyright © 1965 by Science and Society, Inc. 30 East 20th Street, New York, N.Y. 10003 All Rights Reserved Printed in the United States of America Library of Congress Catalog Card Number: 40-10163 341 PREFACE The editors of Science & Society believe that this index to its contents during the first twenty-five years of publication deserves the uncustomary tribute of an editorial note, since it serves to remind us that Science & Society is theoldest publication extant devoted to the theory of Marxism. Indeed, with the single exception of that monument to German scholar ship, Die Neue Zeit (1883-1923), it is the longest-lived Marxist theoretical journal in the world, and this despite the enormous difficulties under which Science & Society has always been published. The editors, therefore, take this opportunity to reaffirm their inten tion of making Science & Society a forum for the best Marxist scholarship, and their hope that the preface to some future edition of its index will no longer need to note the exception of Die N eue Zeit. We think that those who, using this index, rediscover the great variety of subjects treated and the quality of critical scholarship represented, will agree with us that it is a bibliographic tool of real value to all scholars, but truly invaluable to Marxists. Finally, the editors of Science & Society wish to express their deep gratitude to the Louis M. Rabinowitz Foundation whose generous grant made the publication of this index possible.

HUMPHREYS GENEALOGY Some descendants of John Humphreys, of Chester County, Pennsylvania, ten generations of whom have made their home in the Southern States. By ALLAN SPARROW HUMPHREYS FAYETTEVILLE.ARKANSAS TRADITIONS CONCERNING THE ORIGIN OF THE HUMPHREYS FAMILY All branches of the family believe that they are WELSH. Tradition recorded by Rebecca (Humphreys) Parker, born 23 July 1853, Anderson Co., S. C. "Col. Humphreys was an officer who was with William the Con queror in all his wars in England. For his service William gave him a large land grant in Sussex. From this man all Humphreys in America are descended. Following our branch, Daniel Humphreys, a Presby terian preacher came over and settled at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He raised six children-bavid, Solomon, Elijah, Benjamin, Katie and Polly. David was our great grandfather. He came to North Carolina and there married Martha Word. Solomon and Elijah never married. They moved to Tennessee where Solomon was a physician of great fame. Benjamin married and moved to Tennessee and was lost sight of all the others. Katie married Drury McGee and Polly married a Halbert." Tradition recorded by Sally (Humphreys) Boyett, born 5 Feb. 1844, Pickens County, S. C. "The Humphreys family came to America from Wales ten years before the Revolutionary War. Coming over were David, Daniel, and Benjamin, and they were the only Humphreys in America at that time. David settled in North Carolina, Daniel in Virginia, and Benjamin in Baltimore, Maryland. They were pure Welsh." Tradition printed in MEMORIAL AND GENEALOGICAL REC ORD OF SOUTHWEST TEXAS, Goodspeed, 1894. Taken from biography of Benjamin Wayne Humphreys, born 27 Nov.
