The Warriors earned a school-record total of 449.50 points as 10 of the 17 sports participated in their respective NCAA Championships. “I look at this final number in the context of our other two objectives - - academic success and community service,” said WSU Director of Athletics Rob Fournier. “This past term we continued our academic emphasis with a cumulative department GPA of 2.98 and eleven (11) teams above a 3.00, and 4,000 community service hours. “As impressive as our highest national ranking ever would attest, the combination of these other successes underscores the dedication and hard work of a fine group of student-athletes and coaches. We are not where we want to be but we are a long way from where we used to be.” The Warriors’ seven best finishes ever in the NACDA Directors’ Cup standings, which measures the overall performance of athletic programs around the country, have occurred in the last seven years. Baseball Advances To NCAA Regional Championship Game

The 2008 Wayne State baseball team enjoyed one of its most successful seasons in school history, reaching the championship game of the NCAA North Central Regional after winning a school-record 34 games and the GLIAC regular season championship. After starting the season with a 2-7 record, the Warriors warmed up as the weather did, winning 28 of their final 36 regular season games including their first 13 GLIAC contests. Wayne State was the top seed in the GLIAC Tournament, having clinched its first regular-season title since 2005 and sixth in history. The team earned a 3-2 win over Findlay in the opening round at Dow Diamond in Midland, but lost to Grand Valley State the following day before being ousted by the Oilers later that evening. Yet the season did not end there, as Wayne State was granted a berth in the NCAA Regional, its second in program history. Wayne State won three games in the tournament and advanced to the title game, where they suffered a 3-0 setback to Ashland in the third meeting of the weekend between the two teams. Accolades were plentiful for the team at the end of the year, as six players garnered All-GLIAC honors, including Anthony Bass (Trenton, Mich.) and Michael Wiseman (White Lake, Mich.) the conference’s Pitcher and Freshman of the Year, respectively. In addition, head coach Jay Alexander collected his second career Coach of the Year award. Bass and Adam Kaminski (Clinton Twp., Mich.) accumulated two All-Region honors apiece and subsequently became the first WSU baseball All-Americans in 30 years. The ultimate personal achievement of the season, however, was Bass’ selection in the fifth round of the Major League Baseball draft by the San Adam Kaminski Diego Padres.

Yetman limited opposing batters to a .147 average in over 203 innings and recorded 10 complete game shutouts. Catcher Sarah Berry (Acton, Ont.) was a First Team All-GLIAC selection for the third consecutive year and was voted to the NFCA All-Great Lakes Region First Team for the second straight year. She .349 while leading the Warriors in doubles (15), home runs (5) and RBI (39). First baseman Lindsey Perry (Taylor, Mich.) was one of three players to start all 53 games. She led the team with 21 multiple-hit games, a .370 batting average, a .427 on-base percentage, 36 runs scored, 64 hits, 92 total bases and 14 walks to earn Second Team All-GLIAC accolades. Wayne State went 4-2 in the GLIAC tournament and had a 2-2 mark in the NCAA regional tournament, including a victory over defending national champion SIU-Edwardsville, the tournament runner-up. Berry, Perry and Meredith Boxberger (Plymouth, Mich.) were selected to the regional all-tournament team. Head coach Gary Bryce recorded his 870th win at WSU and, combined with Sarah Berry 130 softball coaching wins at the high school level, reached the 1,000 career win plateau with WSU’s sweep of Lake Superior on April 6.

Golf Makes Super Regional; Juszczyk Moves On To NCAAs

The Wayne State University men’s golf team enjoyed a solid 2007-08 campaign which culminated with Joe Juszczyk (Dearborn Heights, Mich.) becoming the first Warrior golfer to compete at the NCAA Championship since current head coach Mike Horn in 1986. Juszczyk shot a four-round 295 to tie for 74th at nationals, held at Memorial Park Golf Course in conjunction with the NCAA Division II Spring Championships Festival in Houston, Texas. He reached the NCAA Championship by becoming the first NCAA Super Regional medalist in school history. Juszczyk also tied Joe Spatafore’s 54-hole school record of 213, set in 1983. Wayne State’s appearance at the Super Regional, held at Red Hawk Run Golf Club in Findlay, Ohio, was its fourth in the last five years under Horn. The Warriors placed sixth with a combined score of 903, finishing ahead of Findlay and Saginaw Valley State in the Great Lakes Region. The lengthy golf season began early last September, when the Warriors won consecutive events at Northern Michigan and Northwood. After a fifth-place showing at the first Great Lakes Regional at HawksHead, Wayne State won its own Motor City Invitational event, leading into the GLIAC Championship where WSU tied for fifth. The Warriors performed particularly well in April, taking fifth place at the second Regional at Cherry Blossom, winning Findlay’s Outback Steakhouse Invitational and finishing second at the third Regional at Purgatory. Redshirt senior Ryan Johnson (New Boston, Mich.) concluded his career by earning First Team All-GLIAC honors for the fourth time. He and Juszczyk Joe Juszczyk also garnered PING All-Great Lakes Region honors from the Golf Coaches Association of America.

Men’s Tennis Qualifies For NCAA Tournament

Second-year head coach Dennis Royal had high hopes for the 2008 campaign despite having just four returning letterwinners on his squad. With four newcomers on the roster, ups and downs were expected. After starting the year with two wins in their first five matches, the Warriors rattled off four consecutive victories (all against GLIAC opponents) before five losses in a six-match span to conclude the regular-season. In the GLIAC tournament, however, the Warriors downed Mercyhurst 5-1 and following a setback to Northwood, Wayne State avenged an earlier loss to Ferris State with a 5-2 triumph. The victory over the Bulldogs gave the fourth-seeded WSU netters and third-place finish in the conference tournament. Wayne State qualified for the NCAA tournament for the sixth time in seven years. Despite a first round setback to Grand Valley State, sophomore Antoine Marenaud (Bordeaux, France) closed out the season with an impressive 17- match winning streak at the No. 2 singles spot with a straight set win. He finished the year with a 19-3 singles mark. Seniors Donavon Mitchell (12-6) and Alejandro Gomez (11-5) also had good seasons in singles play. WSU’s No. 1 doubles tandem of freshman Johan Maubacq and Mitchell compiled an 11-6 mark, while the third doubles duo of Gomez and Marenaud had a 10-7 record. Four members received All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) honors as voted by the league coaches. Marenaud and Maubacq (Bussy St. Georges, France) were First Team All-GLIAC selections while Mitchell (Detroit, Mich.) was named to the Second Team. Gomez (Comitan Chiapas, Mexico) earned Honorable Mention accolades. Antoine Marenaud
