Galicia We first want to give a few explanations in order to improve understanding for the special conditions of Galicia's protestant parishes. The protestant parishes of Galicia are exclusively German parishes and have mainly emerged from the country's colonization carried out by Empress Maria Theresia and Emperor Josef II in the second half of the last century. Immigrants mainly came from South Germany. Protestant colonists received considerable rights and privileges through the patents of October 1, 1774 and September 17, 1781. SUGGESTIONS FOR RESEARCHING GALICIA - Betty Wray, Editor, Galizien German Descendants newsletter. A HISTORY OF GALICIA All of us have ancestors who came from Galicia but many of us don't know much about the country. The following is a history that you might find interesting. Galicia is a historic region of Eastern Europe, located north of the Carpathian mountains and extending from the area around Krakow in Poland to as far east as Ternopol in Ukraine, which constituted an Austrian Kronland (Crownland) between 1772 and 1918. Galicia had an area of 30,299 sq. miles, about the size of S. Carolina. In 1910 two separate sources listed population at 7,316,000 and 7,980,477; about 59% speaking Polish, 31% Ukrainian and 10% Yiddish. No mention was made of the percentage of German-speaking persons in the encyclopedia from which I obtained this info. The linguistic frontier between these two races ran roughly north and south of Przemysl, east of which, 72% of the population was Ruthenian. The name Ruthenian was tradition-ally applied to the Ukrainian inhabitants of Poland and Hungary. The majority of the urban population, especially in the east, was Jewish. The official Austrian name for the region - Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria - derived from the medieval principality of Galich (in Polish, Halicz), which was united with Volhynia in 1199. The region came under Mongol rule before becoming part of Poland in 1340.

After a short introduction on the legal as�ects of de- marcating of new villages, the �rimary forms of settlements were studied. �n the first �art of the article, the analyzes covered the following layouts of settlement areas one�sided linear villages, two�sided linear villages and street�green villages. �n the further �art of the article, multi�road layouts were �resented, including two� street layouts, radially ��lanned layouts, lattice chessboard layouts and cross�sha�ed layouts. �he com�arative analysis covers the discussion of all available ty�es of settlement areas. Street layouts turned out to be the dominant �attern of settlement areas. After in�de�th analyses, it is im�ossible to determine the regionaliza- tion of the linear villages’ distribution, as they were located throughout Galicia. �he situation is different with the location of multi�road layouts, which were designed only in Eastern Galicia in the vicinity of Lviv. �n the im�lementation of the assumed research �roblem, cartogra�hic materials and source documents in the form of the Jose�hinian Cadastre, the Franciscan Cadastre and the Galician Cadastre obtained during searches conducted at the National Archives in Krakow, State Archives in Przemyśl and the Central State Historical Archives of Ukraine in Lviv were used.

  • Śluby W Parafii Greckokatolickiej Kałusz W Latach 1785–1897
    „Przeszłość Demograficzna Polski” 33, 2014 Konrad Rzemieniecki, Anna Miesiąc-Stępińska Wrocław Śluby w parafii greckokatolickiej Kałusz w latach 1785–1897 Kałusz leży u podnóża Karpat, w dorzeczu Dniestru, około 100 km na połu- dniowy wschód od Lwowa. W okresie Pierwszej Rzeczypospolitej był centralnym ośrodkiem starostwa kałuskiego administracyjnie przyporządkowanego do ziemi halickiej i województwa ruskiego. Po zajęciu tego obszaru przez Austrię w 1772 roku przynależał do cyrkułu stryjskiego, a w drugiej połowie stulecia stał się mia- stem powiatowym. Miasto było złączone w jedną gminę katastralną z kolonią niemiecką Nowy Kałusz oraz wsią Bania, które pozostawały jednak odrębnymi gminami administracyjnymi1. Początki osadnictwa w miejscu obecnego miasteczka Kałusza nie są znane. Wiejska, a być może miejska osada na prawie ruskim, istniała już przed 1464 rokiem, kiedy to Kazimierz Jagiellończyk 5 kwietnia darował kościołowi w użytkowanie jedną warzelnię z dwoma małymi panwiami. W 1549 roku Zygmunt August upoważ- nił Mikołaja Sieniawskiego, wojewodę bełskiego i starostę halickiego, do założenia w starostwie miasta na prawie niemieckim pod nazwą Kałusze. Cztery lata później w nagrodę za zasługi wojenne Zygmunt August temuż Sieniawskiemu nadał wieczyście dobra królewskie Kałusz z przyległościami, zastrzegając, że po ewentualnym wygaś- nięciu jego potomstwa płci męskiej, darowizna wróci do Korony. Uformowane wów- czas starostwo kałuskie składało się z miasta Kałusza i 33 wsi. W konsekwencji pierw- szego rozbioru Rzeczypospolitej miasto znalazło się pod panowaniem austriackim, a 1 maja 1782 roku zostało przejęte przez zaborcę na skarb państwa. Równocześnie do wsi przynależnych przyłączono osady niemieckie w Kałuszu (tak zwany Nowy Kałusz), Landestreu i Ugartsthal. One of the problems facing all researchers when starting their family’s genealogy is determining where their immigrant ancestor came from. Numerous articles in genealogy magazines have been devoted to helping researchers find the name of their immigrant’s village. But after finding the name of the village, the next question arises: Where was the village? If you haven’t found your village in the index for the map of Galicia, which is available, along with the map itself, on the Galizien Germans Descendants Society (GGDS) web site, and you don’t have a copy of Brian Lenius’ Genealogical Gazetteer of Galicia, then take a look at the Gemeindelexikon, available for free on the web. More formally, it’s the Gemeindelexikon der im Reichsrate vertretenen Königreiche und Länder, XII, Galizien, i.e., Gazetteer of the Crown Lands and Territories Represented in the Imperial Council, Volume 12, Galicia. The gazetteer, published in 1907, uses information gathered during a census of the Austrian Empire taken in 1900. (For those of you whose research has taken you to Bukovina, volume 13 is devoted to that area and can be found on the same web site as the volume for Galicia.) The Gemeindelexikon is in the DjVu format, the same as used for Ludwig Schneider’s book, Das Kolonizationswerk, and, as with the book, it helps to download and install the DjVu reader and browser plug-in.
