Maggie’s provides support for everyone affected by cancer. Last year, its eight Centres in Scotland opened their doors over 80,000 times to people who are facing cancer, and their family and friends. Just the word ‘cancer’ is frightening enough; it brings tough questions, uncertainty and is one of the most distressing times that a person can find themselves in. Support at Maggie’s comes in a variety of ways: through providing a safe space for people to talk about their feelings and worries to helping them meet other people in a similar situation and providing support for practical and financial concerns. There is no one right way to support a person with cancer, but information, knowledge, understanding and support is critical and can make a huge difference to a person’s state of mind or wellbeing – all provided by Maggie’s professional team. Maggie’s is there for everyone – the youngest visitors can be a few weeks old to people in their 90’s. One of its key activities is supporting younger visitors, who have a parent or carer with cancer, by running Kids and Teens Days. Informal and creative, these sessions offer information about cancer and its treatment, as well as the chance to share stories and experiences. The day includes a visit to radiology and chemotherapy departments with a Maggie’s Cancer Support Specialist and an NHS cancer nurse where young people are given an opportunity to ask questions about their parents’ treatment and to talk and explore their feelings in a facilitated and safe environment. As one parent put it, ‘the benefits of these days are to hear how my children are coping and for them to be less scared and frightened of what I have to go through. Thank you to all the fabulous staff at Maggie’s for providing so much support to our children’. Nobody should face cancer on their own. Did you know that Scotland has the third highest incidence of type 1 diabetes in the world? More than 30,000 people in Scotland live with the condition. Incidence is increasing by about four per cent each year and particularly in children under five, with a five per cent increase each year in this age group over the last 20 years. Ty, age 9 from Aberdeen, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 2011 when he was just three years old. To date he has had to have over 13,000 finger prick blood tests and 11,000 insulin injections, just to stay alive. Ty’s mum Mechelle, said “Ty’s diagnosis was devastating, I was mourning the loss of my healthy carefree boy. I knew that life would never be the same, but even then I had no idea of the impact type 1 diabetes would have on Ty and on our family as a whole. I will never forget the anguish in Ty’s voice when he looked in my eyes and screamed ‘help me mummy’ as the nurses held him down and fought multiple times to put IVs in his hands and feet. My poor boy was only 3 years old; he didn’t understand that they were trying to save his life. Thanks to JDRF’s research projects and the support of everyone here today we have hope. Hope for a future without diabetes, or at least technologies to make living with the condition a whole lot easier. It means everything to my family that you are supporting JDRF today and it especially means a lot to Ty.” JDRF is the type 1 diabetes research charity, funding and coordinating ground breaking clinical studies around the world. In Scotland, one JDRF-funded study is being led by Professor Helen Colhoun from Edinburgh, who is looking at identifying signs that can predict kidney disease in people with type 1 diabetes.
