The aim of this study was to identify intestinal parasites from wild rodents in Santo Amaro da Imperatriz and Santa Catariana Island, and to compare the richness and composition of the gastrointestinal parasite community of both areas. Rodents were captured with live traps, and feces were screened using the sedimentation method and optical microscopy. The following species of rodents were captured in the two areas: Akodon montensis, Euryoryzomys russatus, Oligoryzomys nigripes and Nectomys squamipes. In Santo Amaro da Impetratriz, prevalent parasites were: A. montensis (51%), E. russatus (62%), O. nigripes (53%) and N. squamipes (20%). From the Island of Santa Catarina the rodent prevalence rates were: A. montensis (43%), E. russatus (59%), O. nigripes (30%) and N. squamipes (33%) and the collected parasites were: Hymenolepis sp., Longistriata sp., Strongyloides sp., Hassalstrongylus sp., Syphacia sp., Trichomonas sp., Ancylostomidae, Trichuridae, Oxyuridae and Eucoccidiorida. -

The examined nematodes are predominantly parasites of fishes. Their analyses provided well-supported trees allowing the study of phylogenetic relationships among some spirurine nematodes. The present results support the placement of Cucullanidae at the base of the suborder Spirurina and, based on the position of the genus Philonema (subfamily Philoneminae) forming a sister group to Skrjabillanidae (thus Philoneminae should be elevated to Philonemidae), the paraphyly of the Philometridae. Comparison of a large number of sequences of representatives of the latter family supports the paraphyly of the genera Philometra, Philometroides and Dentiphilometra. The validity of the newly included genera Afrophilometra and Carangi- nema is not supported. These results indicate geographical isolation has not been the cause of speciation in this parasite group and no coevolution with fish hosts is apparent. On the contrary, the group of South-American species ofAlinema , Nilonema and Rumai is placed in an independent branch, thus markedly separated from other family members. -

Nippostrongylus marhaeniae resembles N. magnus and N. typicus of Australian rats in the bursal structure but is readily distinguished by having only 12 ridges of synlophe in midbody of both sexes and in that the tips of spicules are not recurved strongly. Species of Odilia were first recorded outside of New Guinea-Australian region, and 1 of the present species closely resembles O. mackerrasae from the Australian rat by having inter- mittent ridges in the ventral side. Presence of the trichostrongyloids closely related to the Australian represen- tatives suggests that these nematodes were introduced by some rats from the New Guinea-Australian region and have been maintained within the endemic rat community on Halmahera Island. Morphological characteristics and ecological data are provided. Holochilus vulpinus (Brants, 1827) and H. chacarius Thomas, 1906 were parasitized by only one digenean species, Cladorchis pyriformis (Diesing, 1838). The morphometric features of this species and those reported by previous authors from South America are presented and compared. Holochilus vulpinus and a locality of Corrientes province was the host most frequently parasitized. Cladorchis pyriformis is recorded for the first time inH. chacarius.
