20 wycc.org ONE-MINUTE BIOGRAPHY with Gwen Ifill Gwen Ifill’s career in journalism—both print and broadcast—has spanned decades. After she graduated from Simmons College in 1977, she first worked for the Boston Herald. Her talents led her to the Washington Post and then to the New York Times, where she was the White House correspondent. In 1994, Ifill made the switch to television when she was hired as NBC’s chief congressional and political correspondent. She joined PBS in 1999, where she is now moderator and managing editor of Washington Week and co-anchor and managing editor of PBS NewsHour. Ifill has covered seven presidential campaigns and moderated two vice-presidential debates: one in 2004 between Dick Cheney and John Edwards, and one in 2008 between Joe Biden and Sarah Palin. She helped Washington Week earn a Peabody Award in 2008 also, when they held a series of road shows with live audiences in 10 cities across the country. Although Ifill has transitioned from print to broadcast journalism, she has not abandoned the written word. In 2009, she published the bestseller The Breakthrough: Politics and Race in the Age of Obama. Ifill has received over 20 honorary doctorates and is on the board of the News Literacy Project and the Committee to Protect Journalists. She is also a fellow with the American Academy of Sciences.
