The Fact Book is a consolidation of institutional information gathered from various sources. It contains many tables and graphs, which will be helpful to administrators, faculty, staff, students, and other constituents of the university. The Office of Institutional Research, in its on-going effort to provide timely information and analysis, will continue refining this document each year. We hope you will review this document closely and use it on a continual basis. Please take the time to provide us with any feedback you may have concerning the Fact Book. Regards, Jamir Chowdhury, EdD Director Institutional Research and Data Warehouse 4 ABOUT QATAR ABOUT QATAR Qatar is a small peninsula of 11,437 square kilometers that lies halfway along the west coast of the Arabian Gulf. The population is near 1 million, and 61% of the inhabitants live in Doha, the capital city. The official language is Arabic, and Islam is the official religion. The currency is the Qatari Riyal (QR). The time zone is GMT+3, and the IDD code is +0974. The climate during the summer is hot with high humidity. The winter months, October through April, offer an amazingly clear and comfortable climate, with temperatures ranging from 15 to 30 degrees Celsius. Aside from the capital city, Qatar boasts such prominent destinations as Al-Khor, Al- Wakra, Dukhan, Al-Shamal, Mesaieed and Al-Zubarah. Since gaining independence on September 3, 1971, Qatar has been making great progress in a wide range of fields, as well as becoming one of the fastest-growing economies in the world. Doha is an increasingly modern and cosmopolitan city, offering excellent entertainment, cultural, and sporting events, as well as other exciting activities. It is comprised of seven colleges: the College of Arts & Sciences, the College of Business & Economics, the College of Education, the College of Engineering, the College of Law, the College of Pharmacy, and the College of Sharia & Islamic Studies. Programs offered at the University attract professional recognition through their emphasis on close working links with business, industry, and other professions. At the same time, however, they emphasize the importance of a solid base of general skills and knowledge through a carefully designed Core Curriculum, which was conceived with an eye to the needs and requirements of Qatari society and its labor market. The University’s teaching and research are innovative, collaborative, enterprising, and flexible endeavors, based on the intelligent use of emerging technologies. In addition to two notable libraries, Qatar University QU has always strived to fulfill its mission as the country’s boasts a number of support-for-learning centers and units, beacon of knowledge. With seven colleges, over 30,900 including an audio library, an e-library, advanced internet graduates, and a faculty community of almost 700 members, facilities, an educational-technology center, advanced video- the University is also an active participant in several prestigious conferencing facilities, and an active Office for Faculty and regional and international associations, including the Union Instructional Development. of Arab Universities, the league of Islamic Universities, and the International Association of Universities, to name just a few. Qatar University offers over 60 specializations (the widest range in the country), and boasts substantial research and academic infrastructure, as well as the reputation as a leading center for research in the country. As a result, QU has been successful in attracting a large number of distinguished scholars, researchers, and faculty members from other Arab countries and beyond. 8 HISTORY OF QATAR UNIVERSITY In 1973, having foreseen education as a principle contribution to its expanding society, the Emir of Qatar issued a decree proclaiming the establishment of Qatar’s first national College of Education. Among a small population, the college admitted a respectable 57 male and 93 female students in its first year. After several semesters, rapid development of the country made it necessary to expand upon the College of Education to accommodate new areas of specialization. In 1977, Qatar University was founded with four colleges: Education; Humanities & Social Sciences; Sharia, Law, & Islamic Studies; and Science. By 1985, two additional colleges, Engineering and Business & Economics, had been established. 9 ORGANIZATION CHART 10 BOARD OF REGENTS The Board of Regents is appointed by Emiri decree. It is Mr. Ahmad Mahdi Al Majed charged with setting out the overall policy of the University, Business Man monitoring its implementation, as well as providing general oversight of all its activities and systems. It shall exercise Dr. Hessa Sultan Al-Jabir ultimate institutional authority as set forth in its Bylaws and in General Secretary such other policy documents it deems to be appropriate. The location is excellent, and overlooks the coast, the Doha Golf Course and the West Bay Lagoon housing complex on the eastern side. In addition to the main campus, the University has an experimental farm located 65 km north of Doha. QU’s main campus is built on a total area of about 8 square kilometers, with architecture that is distinguished and modern, while reflecting the ideals of traditional Islamic design. The campus is divided into two adjacent sections, for male and female students.
