Lab: Specific Heat Summary Students relate thermal energy to heat capacity by comparing the heat capacities of different materials and graphing the change in temperature over time for a specific material. Students explore the idea of insulators and conductors in an attempt to apply their knowledge in real world applications, such as those that engineers would. Engineering Connection Engineers must understand the heat capacity of insulators and conductors if they wish to stay competitive in “green” enterprises. Engineers who design passive solar heating systems take advantage of the natural heat capacity characteristics of materials. In areas of cooler climates engineers chose building materials with a low heat capacity such as slate roofs in an attempt to heat the home during the day. In areas of warmer climates tile roofs are popular for their ability to store the sun's heat energy for an extended time and release it slowly after the sun sets, to prevent rapid temperature fluctuations. Engineers also consider heat capacity and thermal energy when they design food containers and household appliances. Just think about your aluminum soda can versus glass bottles! Thermodynamics of Solar Energy Conversion in to Work

Gamalath Department of Physics, University of Colombo, Colombo 03, Sri Lanka Abstract Using a simple thermodynamic upper bound efficiency model for the conversion of solar energy into work, the best material for a converter was obtained. Modifying the existing detailed terrestrial application model of direct solar radiation to include an atmospheric transmission coefficient with cloud factors and a maximum concentration ratio, the best shape for a solar concentrator was derived. Using a Carnot engine in detailed space application model, the best shape for the mirror of a concentrator was obtained. A new conversion model was introduced for a solar chimney power plant to obtain the efficiency of the power plant and power output. 1. INTRODUCTION A system that collects and converts solar energy in to mechanical or electrical power is important from various aspects. There are two major types of solar power systems at present, one using photovoltaic cells for direct conversion of solar radiation energy in to electrical energy in combination with electrochemical storage and the other based on thermodynamic cycles. The efficiency of a solar thermal power plant is significantly higher [1] compared to the maximum efficiency of twenty percent of a solar cell. Although the initial cost of a solar thermal power plant is very high, the running cost is lower compared to the other power plants. Therefore most countries tend to build solar thermal power plants. -

Abu-Mulaweh Engineering Department Indiana University–Purdue University Fort Wayne Fort Wayne, IN 46805-1499, USA Overview The compression of gas in a steady-state, steady-flow (SSSF) compressor is an important topic that is addressed in virtually all engineering thermodynamics courses. A typical situation encountered is when the gas inlet conditions, temperature and pressure, are known and the compressor dis- charge pressure is specified. The traditional instructional approach is to make certain assumptions about the compression process and about the gas itself. For example, a special case often consid- ered is that the compression process is reversible and adiabatic, i.e. isentropic. The gas is usually ÊÌ considered to be ideal, i.e. ÈÚ applies, with either constant or temperature-dependent spe- cific heat capacities. The constant specific heat capacity assumption allows for direct computation of the discharge temperature, while the temperature-dependent specific heat assumption does not. In this paper, a MATLAB computer model of the compression process is presented. The substance being compressed is air which is considered to be an ideal gas with temperature-dependent specific heat capacities. Two approaches are presented to describe the temperature-dependent properties of air. The first approach is to use the ideal gas table data from Ref. [1] with a look-up interpolation scheme. The second approach is to use a curve fit with the NASA Lewis coefficients [2,3]. The computer model developed makes use of a bracketing–bisection algorithm [4] to determine the temperature of the air after compression. -

HEAT AND TEMPERATURE Heat is a type of ENERGY. When absorbed by a substance, heat causes inter-particle bonds to weaken and break which leads to a change of state (solid to liquid for example). Heat causing a phase change is NOT sufficient to cause an increase in temperature. Heat also causes an increase of kinetic energy (motion, friction) of the particles in a substance. This WILL cause an increase in TEMPERATURE. Temperature is NOT energy, only a measure of KINETIC ENERGY The reason why there is no change in temperature at a phase change is because the substance is using the heat only to change the way the particles interact (“stick together”). There is no increase in the particle motion and hence no rise in temperature. THERMAL ENERGY is one type of INTERNAL ENERGY possessed by an object. It is the KINETIC ENERGY component of the object’s internal energy. When thermal energy is transferred from a hot to a cold body, the term HEAT is used to describe the transferred energy. The hot body will decrease in temperature and hence in thermal energy. The cold body will increase in temperature and hence in thermal energy. Temperature Scales: The K scale is the absolute temperature scale. The lowest K temperature, 0 K, is absolute zero, the temperature at which an object possesses no thermal energy. The Celsius scale is based upon the melting point and boiling point of water at 1 atm pressure (0, 100o C) K = oC + 273.13 UNITS OF HEAT ENERGY The unit of heat energy we will use in this lesson is called the JOULE (J). -

22 Solar Thermal Energy Solar thermal energy is an application of solar energy that is very different from photovol- taics. In contrast to photovoltaics, where we used electrodynamics and solid state physics for explaining the underlying principles, solar thermal energy is mainly based on the laws of thermodynamics. In this chapter we give a brief introduction to that field. After intro- ducing some basics in Section 22.1, we will discuss Solar Thermal Heating in Section 22.2 and Concentrated Solar (electric) Power (CSP) in Section 22.3. 22.1 Solar thermal basics We start this section with the definition of heat, which sometimes also is called thermal energy . The molecules of a body with a temperature different from 0 K exhibit a disordered movement. The kinetic energy of this movement is called heat. The average of this kinetic energy is related linearly to the temperature of the body. 1 Usually, we denote heat with the symbol Q. As it is a form of energy, its unit is Joule (J). If two bodies with different temperatures are brought together, heat will flow from the hotter to the cooler body and as a result the cooler body will be heated. Dependent on its physical properties and temperature, this heat can be absorbed in the cooler body in two forms, sensible heat and latent heat. Sensible heat is that form of heat that results in changes in temperature. It is given as − Q = mC p(T2 T1), (22.1) where Q is the amount of heat that is absorbed by the body, m is its mass, Cp is its heat − capacity and (T2 T1) is the temperature difference. -

These values somehow have never been verified by experimental result. In this paper, empirical models were proposed and developed to estimate the system pressure, the generator temperature and the partial pressure of butane in the evaporator. These values are important to predict the system operation and the evaporator temperature. The empirical models were verified by experimental results of five experimental settings where the power input to generator and bubble pump were varied. The error for the estimation of the system pressure, generator temperature and partial pressure of butane in evaporator are ranged 0.89-6.76%, 0.23-2.68% and 0.28-2.30%, respectively. -

Naval Academy, and served as a commissioned officer in the USN for 25 years; his first 12 years were spent as a shipboard officer, while his remaining service was spent strictly in engineering assignments. He received his Ocean Engineer and SMME degrees from MIT, and his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School. He served as an Instructor at the Naval Postgraduate School and as a Professor of Engineering at Maine Maritime Academy; he is currently a member of the Department of Engineering Mechanics at the U.S. Air Force Academy. James W. Baughn is a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley (B.S.) and of Stanford University (M.S. and PhD) in Mechanical Engineering. He spent eight years in the Aerospace Industry and served as a faculty member at the University of California, Davis from 1973 until his retirement in 2006. TEMPERATURE, HEAT, and SPECIFIC HEAT INTRODUCTION Temperature and Heat Are Two Topics That Are Often Confused
TEMPERATURE, HEAT, AND SPECIFIC HEAT INTRODUCTION Temperature and heat are two topics that are often confused. Temperature measures how hot or cold an object is. Commonly this is measured with the aid of a thermometer even though other devices such as thermocouples and pyrometers are also used. Temperature is an intensive property; it does not depend on the amount of material present. In scientific work, temperature is most commonly expressed in units of degrees Celsius. On this scale the freezing point of water is 0oC and its boiling point is 100oC. Heat is a form of energy and is a phenomenon that has its origin in the motion of particles that make up a substance. Heat is an extensive property. The unit of heat in the metric system is called the calorie (cal). One calorie is defined as the amount of heat necessary to raise 1 gram of water by 1oC. This means that if you wish to raise 7 g of water by 4oC, (4)(7) = 28 cal would be required. A somewhat larger unit than the calorie is the kilocalorie (kcal) which equals 1000 cal. The definition of the calorie was made in reference to a particular substance, namely water. It takes 1 cal to raise the temperature of 1 g of water by 1oC. Does this imply perhaps that the amount of heat energy necessary to raise 1 g of other substances by 1oC is not equal to 1 cal? Experimentally we indeed find this to be true. In the modern system of international units heat is expressed in joules and kilojoules.
