Ocharan) RESEARCH INTERESTS I am a behavioral ecologist, interested in the micro- and macroevolutionary processes that promote diversity. My research has explored questions on the evolution of color signals, color vision, and flight morphology. I am particularly interested in understanding the evolution of color signals, how they are perceived by intended and unintended receivers and the role of these audiences in driving population and species divergence. I also study the evolution of flight morphology because wings are large conspicuous body surfaces that can be also used as motion signal vehicles for intra- and interspecific communication. -

Summary – After the third European Congress of Odonatology (ECOO) which took place from 11 to 17 July in Montpellier (France), 21 odonatologists from six countries participated in the week-long field trip that was organised in the Aude department. This area was chosen as it is under- surveyed and offered the participants the possibility to discover the Languedoc-Roussillon region and the dragonfly fauna of southern France. In summary, 43 sites were investigated involving 385 records and 45 dragonfly species. These records could be added to the regional database. C. PHIRI A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO BINDURA UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE EDUCATION, IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENT FOR THE BACHELOR OF SCIENCE EDUCATION HONOURS DEGREE (BIOLOGY). JUNE 2014 1 ABSTRACT This study was done to determine the infestation levels by water mites (Hydrachnidae) on dragonflies (Anisoptera) that are found at a marsh along Mwenje Dam in Mazowe District, Zimbabwe. A total of 111 dragonflies comprising Aeshnidae (31.5%) and Libellulidae (68.5%) were collected over a period of four months (January to April 2014). The total length and gender of each individual was recorded, as well as number and attachment sites of the parasitic mites. Overall, a total of 28.8% insects were infected. Among the Aeshnidae, the proportion of males that were infected were significantly greater than the females (Chi- square, χ2, p < 0.05). However, for Libellulidae there was no significant difference in the proportions of infected males and females (Chi-square, χ2, p > 0.05). A significantly greater proportion of Aeshnidae was parasitized as compared to Libellulidae (Chi-square, χ2, p < 0.05). For both taxa, the parasites were attached on either the thorax or abdomen, with no significant difference in the number of parasites between the two attachment sites (ANOVA, p > 0.05). 2 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to thank my supervisors Dr Phiri and Mr Munosiyei for guidance, encouragement and support during the research period especially when hope was oblique. -

AGRION, as well as being a vehicle for passing on WDA news and information, is dedicated to the publishing of light-hearted, anecdotal, unscientific accounts of what our members have experienced. If such accounts are not published here there is a danger that all kinds of trivial, but extremely interesting and amusing, information will never see the light of day – and that would be very sad. AGRION awaits your offerings! MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT - Mike May Having survived almost a year in this position, I think I'm beginning to get the hang of it. As a result, most of the work has been done by other Board members, with my role largely that of cheerleader. I do wish to make this cheer a hearty one, because working with this dedicated group has been a real source of satisfaction. Our big news, of course, is that the transition of I.J.O. from publication by Backhuys Publishers to direct publication by W.D.A. has gone very smoothly so far. Backhuys, and their principal, Wil Peters, have done a good job for us for six years and have been very cordial and professional in facilitating this transition. We believe that the change will result in cost savings and will enhance our control of production, both of which should make it possible to bring members an even better journal. -

Contact: [email protected] ABSTRACT In 2003, the author discovered Macromia splendens (Pictet, 1843) breeding in the River Hozgarganta, which is one of the three principal rivers in the drainage basin of the Guadiaro River (the Guadiaro Cuenca) in Southern Spain. Since that discovery up to the present day the author has made a total of 119 visits to the area, the main purpose of which has been to try to understand how this species, with its need for permanent water, adapts to survive in a region of enormous climatic variation. Throughout the study, periods of extreme weather were encountered which appeared to have little or no impact on the overall populations. Secondly changes made by local people to the rivers to temporarily raise water levels and reduce flow rates greatly increased survival rates for Macromia and opened up new areas for colonisation. Far from being restricted to small areas, M. splendens survives by ranging over all suitable habitats in the Guadiaro Cuenca. RESUMEN En 2003, el autor descubrió una población reproductora de Macromia splendens (Pictet, 1843) en el Hozgarganta, uno de los tres principales ríos de la cuenca hidrográfica del río Guadiaro, localizada en el Sur de la península ibérica. Desde ese decubrimiento, el autor ha realizado un total de 119 visitas en el área con el próposito de intentar comprender cómo esa especie, con requerimientos de aguas permanentes para su desarrollo larvario, se adapta en una región de grandes variaciones climáticas. -
