SOME DESCmDANTS OF JOHN SHEIDON OF RHODE ISLAND Compiled by Mrs. Helen W. Bro-wn 4704 Fordham Road College Park, Maryland 1964 "I have considered the days of old: and the years that are past. 11 BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER CONTENTS page INTRODUCTION vii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS xiii SOlvJE DESCENDANTS OF JOHN SHEIDON OF RHODE ISLAND John Sheldon1 1 John Sheldon2 7 William Sheldon3 10 Roger Sheldon4 11 David Sheldon5 33 James Manning Sheldon ·b 40 APPENDICES 85 I The Sheldons of Derbyshire, England 87 Copy of Will of Gilbert Sheldon, 94 Archbishop of Canterbury II References to other children of 97 John Sheldonl III Will of John Sheldon3 101 INDEX 103 INTrl.ODUCTION The purpose of this genealogy is to make a.va.ila.ble not es taken by my uncle, :Vil'. Frank Manning White of North Attleboro, ~Iassachusetts and to continue a study of the descendants of his grandfather, James Manning Sheldon., to the present generation. The number appearing after each name designates the generation 1 after John Sheldon of Rhode Island. For example., the number f ollowi.ng my name is 9, meaning that I am the ninth generation after John Sheldonl. I hoped, when I began this compilation., to be able to prove the parentage of John Sheldon1, thus establishing his relationship to Gilbert Sheldon, Archbishop of Canterbury, a.nd I have been able to do this to my own satisfaction. The relationship is stated in The Abridged Compendium of American Genealog.y, Vol. III., p 682: Sheldon, John (1630-1708; nephew of Gilbert Sheldon, Bishop of London, Archbishop of Canterbury, Primate of all England), came to America. and jo:L.--ied Roger Williams' Colony at Providence., R. I. The Archbishop Gilbert Sheldon had tw brothers, Hugh and Ralph, according to an article which appeared in 11 The Sheldons of Derbyshire and of New Englandtt by J. Gardner Bartlett, published in the New England Historical and Genealogical Register, Vol. I.XXX, October 1926 (see Appendix 1). The ancestry of this Sheldon family is traced back to the fourteenth century; therefore, if John Sheldon is proved to be the nephew of Gilbert Sheldon, the son of one of Gilbert's brothers, then the descendants of John Sheldon1 can also trace their ancestors vi.i. viii back to the fourteenth century. 11 The Sheldons of Derbyshire and of New En.gland 11 does not, however, list the Archbishop a.shaving a nephew John. From page 383 of the aforementioned periodical, I quote Mr. Bartlett I s article from which John Sheldon I s name is missing: The children of Roger and Helen (Woodcocke)Sheldon were; 1. Hugh bapt. 12 Aug. 1593 2. Ralph It 1 11 1595 m. Mary ••••• , and had children; (1) Gilbert bapt. 28 May 1627 (2) Joseph u 28 Dec. 1628, Lord V.ia.yor of London 1676 (3) Benjamin bapt. 21 Feb. 1630/1 bur. 12 11 1631/2 (4) Daniel bapt. 13 Sept. 1632 3. Gilbert bapt. 22 June 1598, d. 9 Nov. 1677, a graduate of Oxford University, Archbishop of Canterbury 1662-1677. The Sheldonian Theatre at Oxford WGS built at the expense of Gilbert Sheldon, the Archbishop. In the grant of a. coat-of-arms, ma.de to him in 1660 by the College of Arms, it is stated that he was 11 descended from an ancient and honorable family of Derbyshire. 11 In the fascinating study of family history, one often ~ets with discouragement; as in this case, two authorities with contrary information. But one should never give up, and although an ocean has separated me from source ma.teria.l in England, through correspond ence I have found many persons willing to help me. I have been able to obtain a copy of the will of Gilbert Sheldon, Archbishop of Canterbury, proved in 1677 ( see Appendix 1) , which gives information regarding his family not found in 11 The Shel.dons of Derbyshire and of New England." Following is an abstract of the will naming members of the Archbishop's family. ix Dr. John Dolben, now Ld BP of Rochester My neice Catherine Dolben, his wife My nephew & Godsonne Gilbert Dolben sonne of the aforesd Ld BP of Rochester My neice Ellen Mohun My nephew Roger Sheldon My sister-in-law Mrs. Mary Sheldon Her eldest sonne John Sheldon Her second son Gilbert Sheldon Executors; my nephews S!° Joseph Sheldon, Alderman of London, his brother Daniel Sheldon, Merchant From Gilbert Sheldon's will I assume that Catherine, Ellen and Roger were the children of Hugh Sheldon, the Archbishop's oldest brother; that both his brothers Hugh and Ralph preceeded him in death as they were not mentioned; and that his nephews John and Gilbert were either out of favor with their uncle or out of the country (and I believe the latter), as the amounts left them were small in comparison with the amounts left the other nefiphews - - an alderman and a merchant - - and a niece who was the wife of the Lord Bishop of Rochester. The positions of the latter three were, no doubt, ma.de possible through the influence of their uncle, the Archbishop of Canterbury. I recommend fof reference The Life and Times of Gilbert Sheldon written by Vernon Staley and published in 1913. I have used this book at the Library of Congress in Washington, D. C. and at the Peabody Institute Library in Baltimore, Maryland, and it probably can be found in any of the large American libraries. As a result of my research, I believe John Sheldon1 of Rhode Island was the nephew mentioned in the will of Gilbert Sheldon, Archbishop of Canterburyo I am convinced that this John Sheldon, X born in England probably in. 1625, the son of Ralph and Mary Sheldon, was the same John Sheldon who in 1675 in Rhode Island gave his age as "45 or thereabouts" (see page J). Since he was the oldest child of my 11 sister-in-law Mrs. Mary Sheldon,u wife of Ralph Sheldon, his birth could have been in 1625. Therefore, I would question the date of birth given in 11~ Abridged Compendium .Qf American Genealogy, Vol. III, page 682, as 1630. In regard to the reliability of my uncle's research, the reader should know that in 1855 Rev. Henry Olcott Sheldon published., at Loudonville, Ashland County, Ohio, his first Sheldon Magazine. This was a small pamphlet and three more followed, in which he attempted a genealogical list of the Sheldons in America. My uncle, in his research, based the first three generations of our branch of the Sheldons in America (Johnl, John2, Willia.m'.3) on information found in the Sheldon Magazine, which he supplemented with dates from Rhode Island court records •. For the reader1s information, the places where the family settled are in the circled area of the map which follows. It.i$ my hope t.hat, my ~11:cle 1 s _notes. and my additions regarding• the English ancestry of John Sheldon1 and the.descendants of James Manning Sheldon6 will be of interest and of use to those Sheldons whose ancestors originally lived in Rhode Island. ACKNOWLEDGE111ENTS This compilation of records of the Sheldon family of Rhode Island has been ma.de possible by the use of yellowed notes left to me by my uncle and through the cooperation of living Sheldon descend ants. After finding letters from Oregon Sheldons in my grandmother's Bible, I wrote to the County Clerk at Dallas, Oregon., who put me in touch with the granddaughter of my grandmother's niece., and through correspondence I have 11 met 11 many of my western kinsfolk. To them I am deeply grateful, for they have generously answered innumberable questions although they have been modest in telling me of themselves, their educations, professions and successes. I also thank the Iowa. and Illi.~ois descenda~ts, nearly all of whom I have met. I wish to acknowledge my gratefulness to my daughter, Elizabeth Jean Brown, for her encouragement, her illustrations, and especially for her patient listening over a period of two yearso I realize that a record such as this is never complete due to the daily changes which occur in our lives and that one has to do a work of this kind in order to know how best to do another! In Some Descendants of Johm Sheldon of Rhode Island, it has been my aim to place in the hands of those descendants kno'Wil to me family data that in the course of time might otherwise be destroyed and lost. This justifies the many hours I have spent in the pre~ aration of this Sheldon material. Helen White (lvirs. Irvin C.) Brown .A.'. J.J. JOHN SHEIDON1 1625(?)-1708 of Pa.wtuxet in ye Township of Providence., in ye Collony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations in New England The first record had of John Sheldon1, a tanner by trade, occurs in nthe second book of the Town of Providence otherwise called the Town Old Book or the Short Old Book, the Old Burnt Book, and sometimes called the Book with Brass Clasps11 , on page 127. The 8th of the 9th month 1654, Whereas Benett complained unto the Town Deputies against John Sheldon for falling on him in the night; and whereas John Sheldon has presented himself this day to the Town to give satisfaction to them for the said fa.ct; upon his acknowledgement of the £'act unto Hugh Benet., he declared himself satisfied, and upon his real submission to the Town, they declared themselves fully satisfied. Six years after, in 1660, he married Joane Vincent and through her became connected with William Carpenter, one of the original Thirteen Purchasers of the 11 Pa.wtuxet Lands." Austin in His Directory of Rhode Island, page 176, says; "John Sheldon married :March 26, 1660 Joan Vincent, daughter of Frigswith (Carpenter) Vincent.
