May 2015 Update on the New Sexual Health Service Stakeholder Briefing – May 2015 Update on the new sexual health service for North Yorkshire and York York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust has been commissioned by North Yorkshire County Council and City of York Council to deliver a new integrated sexual health service across North Yorkshire and York. The new service will commence on the 1st July and the service will be provided under the recognised name YorSexualHealth. Benefits of the new service will include improved access to services and better training and support to professionals. One advantage of the new service will be the introduction of ‘One stop shop’ clinics providing contraception, STI tests and treatments for all ages. This means that in most cases people will be able to have all their sexual health needs met by one practitioner without the need for onward referral. We are working in partnership with GP Alliances to maximise access and choice for people. We are also working with North Yorkshire AIDS Action to provide Services for People Living with HIV and with Yorkshire MESMAC to provide Community Outreach Services as part of the new integrated service. Improved access to services will be achieved through: • YorSexualHealth Centres in Northallerton, Harrogate, Scarborough, Selby and York • New community clinics across all district council areas • Targeted 'Satellite' clinics (including those targeted towards young people) • Provision for military personnel • Delivery of services in healthcare settings (including GP surgeries) • The use of “virtual” clinics including telephone consultations and postal treatments • A specialist clinical outreach team • Improved professional support, training and leadership will be delivered by: • The implementation of a new sexual health training service • Clinical leadership and advice • Management of a new Condom Distribution Service and the Chlamydia Screening Programme • An improved YorSexualHealth website with a dedicated online resource for professionals Proposed Clinic Locations YORK Monkgate Health Centre York University (CII building) Wenlock Terrace Surgery Front Street Surgery Acomb York College SELBY DISTRICT Selby Hospital Scott Road Medical Centre Sherburn Group Practice Tadcaster Askham Bryan College HARROGATE DISTRICT Heatherdene Mowbray Square Trax Ripon Hospital CRAVEN Dyneley House Skipton Townhead Surgery Settle RICHMONDSHIRE Leyburn Medical Practice Richmond (venue tbc) Catterick Garrison Harewood Medical Practice HAMBLETON Friarage Hospital Northallerton Mowbray House Surgery RYEDALE Malton Hospital Pickering Medical Practice SCARBOROUGH BOROUGH Northway Pinder, Eastfield Yorkshire Coast College The Street Whitby Community Hospital Full details on the level of service provided at each venue, along with clinic times will follow in the next briefing to be issued in June. Q & A What happens if a child had a tonsillectomy or other procedure as a day case but was too unwell to go home overnight? Fiona Hampton – The child would need to be transferred to another hospital. What would happen if you needed an emergency caesarean section and James Cook was full? I’ve heard that Darlington, York and Harrogate will only take planned caesarean sections? Fran Toller (a midwife and divisional manager for women and children at South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust) – I can understand people’s concerns. If a caesarean section was required you want to be assured that you would get that care from whichever hospital you went to.

Q & A Why is there no mention of accessibility and transport for patients from more distant areas? Vicky Pleydell - Transport is and always has been an issue. If problems were simple we would have sorted it before. One of the pieces of work is looking at the three- month period when hospital paediatric services were closed and what the impact was on the ambulance service. If people have ideas about how to make transport system better I would like to hear. Transport needs investment but it is not a health issue. We would have to work with the county council. If you are going ahead with one of the suggestions you are taking it out of council’s hands as you are creating the need for extra transport.

    Children’s and maternity services at The Friarage Hospital The public consultation document: Options for the future Consultation period 2 September - 25 November 2013 HRW003 Summary “Every patient has the right to high quality care that is safe and effective” NHS Constitution Our Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) has a legal duty under the NHS Constitution to commission high quality, safe services. This includes services for pregnant women and children. The Friarage Hospital has a children’s outpatient and inpatient (overnight stay) service which includes a 14-bed children’s ward. It also provides a maternity service in the community and in the hospital. This includes antenatal and postnatal clinics, a labour and postnatal ward and a 10-cot special care baby unit. The hospital is owned and run by South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. In 2011, staff from The Friarage Hospital told us about their concerns for the future safety of these services. They are concerned that they will not be able to retain their clinical skills (and develop new ones) because there are not enough mums to be and children using the services. As part of this process, we sought guidance from a group of independent health experts, called the National Clinical Advisory Team (NCAT). NCAT agreed that the concerns around safety and sustainability were real issues in both the children’s and maternity services and that we needed to address them. In spring last year, we held a three month engagement exercise to talk to local people about the issues and the options for the future. Feedback from the engagement phase has helped us to form the options available and allowed us to understand the views of local people.
