Disney TV Studios, FX Celebrate Pride with 'Pose-A-Thon' Disney TV Studios, FX Celebrate Pride with 'Pose-A-Thon' 06.18.2020 The cast and crew of FX's Pose are coming together on Friday, June 26 to celebrate Pride with a one-hour special event: "Pose-A-Thon." Hosted by stars Billy Porter and MJ Rodriguez, the special will encourage viewers to support LGBTQ+-oriented organizations. "I'm so proud of our cast and producers for coming together to present an uplifting hour of song and stories," said Steven Canals, Pose co-creator, executive producer, writer and director in a statement. "In the spirit of Pose, our goal is to celebrate joy, love and, of course, pride, from our family to yours." "Since we've been unable to shoot the show we love, we jumped at the chance to reunite our Pose family and partner with the studio and network to raise spirits and awareness about the plight of LGBTQ+ people of color during such a turbulent time," said Janet Mock, executive producer, writer and director, also in a statement. "This Pride month special is a commemoration of our forebears' efforts, a memorial for trans lives lost, and a celebration of the life-saving work of LGBTQ+ organizations." "Pose-A-Thon" will unite the voices behind FX's ballroom-inspired drama Pose, featuring music and anecdotes from Porter, Rodriguez, Angel Bismark Curiel, Sandra Bernhard, Dyllón Burnside, Steven Canals, Dominique Jackson, Jeremy McClain, Janet Mock, Indya Moore, Our Lady J, Jason Rodriguez, Angelica Ross, Hailie Sahar, Ryan Jamaal Swain, Charlayne Woodard, and Patti LuPone. Pose supervising producer Tanase Popa is producing. As part of the event, viewers will be encouraged to support charitable LGBTQ+ organizations and three in particular: GLSEN, Hetrick-Martin Institute, and Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund. GLSEN envisions a world in which children learn to respect and accept all people, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression. Each year, GLSEN programs and resources reach millions of students and educators in K-12 schools, via action at national, state and local levels. Over three decades of work, GLSEN has improved conditions for LGBTQ+ students across the United States and launched an international movement to address LGBTQ+ issues in education and promote respect for all in schools. Hetrick-Martin Institute (HMI) believes all young people, regardless of sexual orientation or identity, deserve a safe and supportive environment to achieve their full potential. The organization offers basic and emergency support, mental health counseling, job-readiness training and arts and culture programming for thousands of LGBTQ+ young people and their families living in the New York and New Jersey metropolitan area. HMI also partners with House Lives Matter, a home-grown peer leadership and advocacy project that promotes wellness, quality of life, rights and resiliency among youth and adults in the House Ball Community and mobilizes members from different Houses and regions across the U.S. around a shared agenda of advocacy. Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund is committed to ending discrimination based on gender identity and expression and to achieving equality for transgender people, particularly those most pushed to the margins. The organization is leading the charge on a number of fronts with cutting-edge litigation to advance legal precedent, life-changing legal services, and critical initiatives such as the Trans Health Project, all with the intention of transforming the legal landscape and protect the rights of transgender and non-binary people across the country. Viewers can visit www.poseathon.com to learn more about each organization and ways to get involved starting Monday, June 22...

Whalen Symposium Abstract – Award Consideration John Jacobson, Women’s and Gender Studies Word Count: 694, excluding title and bibliography #GirlsLikeUs: The Development of Femme Identities in the (Auto)biographies of Janet MoCk and Miss Major, BlaCk Trans Women Understanding the subjectivities oF black transgender women lies at the intersection oF multiple academic Fields. Revolutionaries such as Judith Butler, bell hooks and Kate Bornstein have all contributed to discourse surrounding transgender women oF color. To understand and humanize the subjectivities oF these women, there must be an interaction of gender theory, queer theory, queer of color critique, and black Feminism. Trans women oF color are routinely in the margins oF academic spaces because their lives are interactions of unique oppressed identities. This presentation puts the (auto)biographical lives and works (a memoir and documentary, respectively) oF two black trans women in context: Janet Mock, a young activist, author, and media maker, and Miss Major, an elderly activist whose liFe has spanned From Attica to Stonewall and beyond (Licona). It centers their stories through the black Feminist concept of “a healthy love for ourselves, our sisters and our community which allows us to continue our struggle and work” (Combahee River Collective). Through these methods oF black Feminist love, we can observe the ways Mock and Major have developed black trans Femme identities and how those identities are revolutionary. Mock and Major both establish self-love through their modes oF unique gender expression, the way they “become” women in the way that Simone de Beauvoir theorized through personal growth and gender expression. Their living oF this theory allows the idea oF womanhood, or Femme-central identity, to be a “process, a becoming, a constructing that cannot be rightfully said to originate or end” (Butler).
