Good evening and a warm and hospitable welcome is extended to everyone involved with Billingham Town to the newly named ‘Voneus Stadium’ for this Northern League Division One fixture.

Saturday was a positive performance and result, in my opinion probably our most complete performance for a long time - with the exception of the demolition of Kendal in the FA Cup. It really is a case of ‘small wins’ at the moment and if we can get our first win in the league tonight against fellow strugglers ‘Town’ we might all be able to bring ourselves to look at the league table tomorrow!

We are without a game this coming weekend so whether you plan to watch some footy on the TV, getting out and about for some fresh air or going ‘trick or treating’ (IS THIS EVEN PERMITTED DUE TO COVID?!) enjoy your Halloween!

In today’s edition of ‘the good, the bad and the ugly’ to commemorate 10 years here at Heritage Park I have focused on some of the worst periods/games that strand out from our time to date at this ground (more to choose from than I would of liked!!) Over the coming weeks I hope to get some of our supporters memories and reflections from the last 10 years so keep an eye out for this….

I am always looking for ways to keep the content of the matchday programme fresh and innovative so if any supporters have any ideas or feel they can contribute please come and speak to me or e-mail me at [email protected]

Enjoy the game, be sensible and keep everyone safe!

Gav FROM THE CHAIR…

Last Saturday was a great result in the end but very frustrating personally that I couldn’t be there to congratulate the team!

I am hoping for an even better result tonight against Billingham Town to further build on our last two results which will surely give the whole team some much needed confidence.

There is no game for the first team this coming Saturday, however a training session is scheduled for the players ready for next week’s visit to followed by a hard game at home to Stockton Town. I would like to extend a warm welcome to all of the new players that have arrived at the club recently and best of luck to you all.

Our new sponsor signage (shown, left) should be up and visible at Heritage Park this next week and a further meeting with Voneus’ Chief Executive is forthcoming. This is all very positive for the club and we are looking forward to working together with them and the “Voneus” name will be very prominent.

For those of you who have been asking, my families isolation period will be over next week and no doubting the authorities will reduce the current legislation of 14 days down to 7 days as they have suggested - typical after I have done my two week stint!!

In all seriousness the important thing is that everyone is safe and well although it does test your patience when you see and hear of people not adhering to the guidelines.

FROM THE MANAGER…

Good evening and welcome to the ‘Voneus Stadium’ for this tonight’s game v Billingham Town.

We finally got a hard-working performance from all of the team on Saturday and were well worth the point on the day.

The lads bought into our game plan and it worked very well. Myself and ‘Gucky’ looked at the opposition and decided to set up deep and try to limit the amount of chances created by which thankfully worked well.

So yes, a great team effort, but that point means nothing if we don't come prepared for a battle against Billingham Town.

Tonight is a very crucial game and we must show the same work ethic and determination to get the points.

Work rate should be a ‘given’ and then we can focus on the skills and ‘know how’ in order to beat a team who at the moment are suffering like ourselves. Rest assured we will give it our best shot!

Northern League Division One – Bishop Auckland 1-1 North Shields Bishop Auckland: Liversedge, Marshall, Connor, Potter, Robinson, Lines, Ridley, Hennis, Hotchkiss, Winn, Hogan

North Shields: Purvis, Cassidy, Christie, Ormston, Myers, Bexton, Spooner, Forster, Wilson, Robinson, Shepherd

Looking to build on a rare win against Horden CW in the DCC in midweek Bishops were dealt an early blow on 12 minutes when a corner kick from the right was allowed to drift across the box for burly striker Dan Wilson to guide into the net past an isolated Marshall standing on the line.

A couple of penalty shouts for Bishops came and went within 5 minutes midway through the first half, with the second one on Winn (a push from behind) looking rather clumsy after Hogan picked up an interception by Hennis to play the captain in on goal.

The first half drew to a conclusion without any further major incident but no lack of endeavour. Olly Hotchkiss had once again been an influential figure for Bishops playing in a deep lying midfield role and was the one player on either side who had demonstrated any creativity. HT 0-1.

The visitors started the second half with a little more purpose and Liversedge was called into a good block with his legs to keep Bishops within parity.

Arguably the best chance of the game so far fell to Winn just before the hour mark when he found himself one on one with Purvis but didn’t quite have the conviction to place the ball beyond the keepers outstretched legs.

As the rain began to pour Bishops pressed for an equaliser and with just 5 minutes of normal time remaining a lovely placed cross from Hogan found defensive midfielder Jack Connor who powered a header across Purvis and into the far corner to the delight of his team mates and supporters. An unlikely scorer and his first goal for the club.

Just two minutes later and a rare attack that sliced open the organised Bishops defence resulted in a cross across goal being sliced wide by Wilson from just yards out. However, Bishops were not simply intent on seeing the game out for a morale boosting point and in the dying seconds a corner from Hotchkiss found Potter whose powerful header was palmed over the top by Purvis. FT 1-1. ATT 150.

BISHOP AUCKLAND FC SPONSORSHIP!

Bishop Auckland FC Chairman, Steve Coulthard, has an exciting new update on a huge sponsorship deal for the club:

“I am delighted to announce an absolutely superb main sponsorship deal for Bishop AFC. A based broadband company - Voneus Ltd.

Voneus is an established company which specialises in fast rural broadband and has recently awarded Victoria Jewitt the post of Community Engagement Team Leader. Victoria’s hard work and dedication to Bishop AFC, has managed to secure an amazing five figure sponsorship for the club. This also includes ground sponsorship for the forthcoming year.

This is fantastic news, not only for the club, but also the local community. The start of a substantial sponsorship partnership between ourselves and a multi million pound company – Voneus.

I would like to say a special thank you to Victoria for bringing this sponsorship to BAFC and all the hard work she does. The sponsorship deal is absolutely fantastic for the club, and we are extremely grateful for receiving financial backing in these difficult times and brings a huge boost to our finances in these difficult times.

The stadium is to be renamed: The Voneus Stadium.

In a recent announcement, Chris Burns reviewed his main sponsorship commitments due to COVID restrictions but will still be a very large partner in the club which we very much appreciate.

The partnership between Bishop AFC and Voneus, will also assist with the general running of the ground. After Victoria and myself met with the Voneus CEO at the ground, he has also offered financial assistance to the management team. Again, a fantastic opportunity to bring new players into the club, helping us climb up the league & support the community.

Once again, thanks to Victoria for her dedication and complete support in securing this amazing deal for Bishop Auckland FC. We wish her good luck, and further success in her new role working for Voneus alongside the football club.

This is a highly welcomed superb sponsorship package and brings stability and ambition back to the club.”

10 YEARS AT HERITAGE PARK

‘The good, the bad & the ugly’ by Gavin Hadden

As the heading suggests to sum up our first decade at Heritage Park there has been some good, plenty of bad and occasionally a little bit of ‘ugly’ both on and off the pitch. Goals galore, the odd big win, too many heavy defeats – it’s fair to say its not been the fortress we all hoped for after spending 8 years homeless after selling Kingsway. This week I have come up with a selection of the worst moments we have experienced at Heritage Park…

‘The Bad’

Saturday 13th November 2010, Bishop Auckland 2-3 Consett - A day that started with a call to arms for supporters to get the new Heritage Park pitch in playable condition (pictured below) for the first ever competitive game v Consett ended in disappointing fashion aided by one of the worst refereeing decisions seen at the ground. The pre match pitch issues, kamikaze nature of the game and ultimately the deflated feeling at full time would become all too familiar in the following years. Consett went 2-0 up, Bishops rallied with Dan Hawkins scoring the first competitive Bishops goals at the ground but a late Consett attack, able to continue when the assistant referee inadvertently knocked the ball back into play, brought the winner.

18th April 2018, Bishop Auckland 0-6 Sunderland RCA - Season 2017/18 was mostly a torrid one and almost a disastrous one for us Bishops fans. The first half disintegration at Heritage Park, as we tried to scramble enough points to ensure we avoided the unthinkable relegation to Division 2 of the Northern League, was a particularly humiliating evening. RCA raced into a 5-goal lead in no time on a sunny early spring evening as the Bishops players appeared almost shellshocked as to what was happening in front of them. The goals dried up in the 2nd half to at least ensure the score line didn’t threaten to reach double figures as at one point that was a real possibility. RCA were to go one better (7-0) a few weeks later in the return fixture but thankfully we finished the season above the now defunct Jarrow Roofing with 43 pts from 42 league games.

19th September 2020, Bishop Auckland 1-5 Billingham Synthonia – A very recent memory and makes it into this list due to the apparent lack of effort shown by some players involved that day against 2nd Division ‘Synners’ in the FA Vase qualifying round. Clearly some players had other things on their minds as the visitors were able to cruise through the game without so much of a glove being laid on them from kick off. An air of ‘resignation’ seemed to accompany this Saturday afternoon just 5 weeks ago, felt on the terraces as much as on the pitch. 3-0 behind at half time there was only a very brief response by Bishops at the start of the 2nd half before the game drifted to its conclusion with Synners adding two more goals. Ian Chandler oversaw just one more game before he made way for a new management team. Bishop Auckland FC 2020-21… GOALKEEPERS

Billingham Town History…

BILLINHAM TOWN was originally known as Billingham Social Club and was founded in 1967 by Tom Donnelly and Robbie Cushley. Tom, who played in Town’s first game back in 1968, has been secretary of Billingham Town since its conception until 2000 when he relinquished this post to become chairman of the club and subsequently is now life president.

In 1968 Town joined the Second Division of the Stockton & District League and won the league title at the first attempt, playing at Mill Lane and the legendary slope – the top of the corner flag was level with the crossbar. Town stayed in the Stockton League until 1973 and won the Division A League title three times and the League Cup twice and also winning the Stockton Charity Cup twice.

In 1974 Town were admitted into the Teesside League and remained members for eight years. During this time they won the League twice (1978-79 and 1981-82) and were runners-up once. In 1975 they were beaten finalists in the Durham Amateur Cup Final but won the competition in 1976 and 1982.

In 1982 the club took the golden opportunity of joining the newly formed Second Division of the Dryboroughs Northern League and changed its name to Billingham Town. After three years in the Second Division Town gained promotion into the First Division but were immediately relegated back to the Second Division in 1986. However, they bounced straight back in 1987 and lost to neighbours Synthonia in the final of the Durham Challenge Cup a year later. Another relegation followed in 1991-92, but they regained their place in the top flight in 1997-98 and have remained there since.

After being runners-up in the Durham Challenge Cup in 1988-89 and 2001-02 Town eventually won the cup in season 2003-04 when manager Alan Robinson led them to a 3-1 victory over then Unibond side Bishop Auckland.

Since 1981, ground improvements at the Bedford Terrace ground have resulted in new dressing rooms, a cantilever stand, hard terracing behind one goal, hard terracing and covered accommodation opposite the main stand. A refreshment room and a re-turfed pitch surrounded by an 8ft boundary fence around 5.5. acres of land.

Bedford Terrace is now recognised as having one of the more attractive grounds in the North-East. Floodlights were installed in the 1992-93 season with the official switch-on match against Middlesbrough F.C. After severe gales blew down one of the pylons, Town installed new floodlights in 2003. In the summer of 2007 Hartlepool United invested in Bedford Terrace and completely re- laid the football pitch to a depth of several feet and installed new drainage. The new pitch measurements and now exactly the same measurements of Pool’s Victoria Park. Also behind the scenes there has been a total facelift with new showers and central heating being put in the dressing rooms. Hartlepool now play the majority of their home Reserve games at Bedford Terrace.

The 2015/6 season saw the arrival of Manager Barry Oliver and assistant Graham Popple whom have brought stability to the club and managed a respectable finish season.

The 2016/17 season was one of the club most exciting in recent years with a FA Vase run that saw Town knocked out by Cleethorpe Town in the 4th Round proper. The Lincolnshire side went on to make the final only to be beaten by South Shields. Also that year Craig Hutchinson broke the record for goals scored with a total of 59.

At the end of the 2017/18 campaign, stalwart of the club and long running Chairman & Secretary, Peter Martin announced his retirement from all club duties.

Unfortunately, the 2017-18 campaign saw the club rapidly decline off the field with volunteers leaving and attendances dropping dramatically.

In January 2018 the Billingham Town Supporters Trust was set up which worked to oust the regime in charge, eventually taking over the running of the club facilities on 18th February after an EGM of club supporters and volunteers. Paul Beddow was voted in as the new Chairman of the Supporters Trust along with a strong committee behind him.

The new committee immediately set about getting the club back on track which saw many ex-volunteers and supports return and rally around the club.

At the end of the 2017-18 season, Manager James Hunter and his assistant Harry Taylor stood down from their positions, and the club moved swiftly to appoint familiar face Barry Oliver and ex-Thornaby manager Paul Edwards as a joint management team.

The 2018-19 season was a successful one, exceeding all expectations, with the club earning promotion as League Champions - the first title in the Northern League.

2019-20 saw the club establish themselves in the Northern League First Division. Working their way to the top half of the table, the season was cut short when the Covid-19 Pandemic saw the season cancelled and the country enter lockdown for 5 months.
