Sponsored by McKee Wallwork + Co. 2 American Advertising Federation New Mexico | American Advertising Awards 2014 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Welcome to the 2013 American Advertising Federation New Mexico ADDY Awards I became a member of the New Mexico advertising community after transplanting from Los Angeles about 13 years ago. Over the past few years, it has been truly remarkable to watch what was once a market that was dominated by a very small handful of agencies grow into a thriving “ad town” whose work can regularly compete with the best in the country. Every year the body of work submitted to the American Advertising Awards (the ADDYs) continues to grow in quality and scale (and this year’s entries were no exception). It has been my great honor to serve as your president this year, and I am so proud of all of the work we will be showcasing at this year’s American Advertising Awards event. I would also like to thank all of the valuable sponsors that have helped make this event possible: Clear Channel Outdoor Entourage Jazz Free Karate Design Heritage AV Live Nation March Direct Marketing McKee Wallwork & Co. National CineMedia NewCastle Mortgage Starline Printing You Oughta be in Pixels I would also like to express my appreciation to our Public Service Media Partners and sponsors whose support allows the AAF New Mexico to provide valuable education and advocacy to the advertising industry in the area. Congratulations to all of the entrants and winners of tonight’s show. I know I speak for the entire AAF NM Board when I say that we are so proud to have the opportunity to work alongside all of you each and every day. The winner of the AAF New Mexico Presidents Award is determined by the AAF-NM President and Board of Directors. This year's recipient is Mr. Sterling Grant III. Sterling first honed his craft as a commercial editor and director by working along side his father (Silver Medal Winner, Sterling Grant Jr.) at Sterling Sterling Grant III Productions. Sterling III would later move on to become one of the most sought after editors and directors working in the state of New Mexico. His work has received numerous ADDY awards as well as top honors at a variety of respected film festivals. Within our advertising community, Sterling was known for his extreme talent and larger than life persona. It is my great honor to award this year's President's Award to Sterling Grant III. About the President’s Award The President’s Award was created in 1997 to recognize companies and individuals that have made an outstanding contribution to the advertising profession in New Mexico. The award is different from the Silver Medal Award in that it may recognize a company; a person who has contributed a single, yet significant achievement; or a younger individual who has not yet established a lifetime of accomplishment. 4 American Advertising Federation New Mexico | American Advertising Awards 2014 SILVER MEDAL AWARD Mary Lynn Roper This year's Silver Medal Award goes to Ms. Mary Lynn Roper. Ms. Roper is currently the President and GM of KOAT and considered one of the most influential broadcast decision makers in New Mexico. Along with being one of the first female GM's of any major TV network affiliate in the country, she is also best known (by the general public) for her years as co-anchor of “Action 7 News.” Ms. Roper has not only held the top leadership position at KOAT-ABC7 for over 20 years, she is also the current Chair of the New Mexico Broadcasters Association. Along with her day to day duties of running a television station, Ms. Roper is also dedicated to every community service initiative that KOAT is involved in, including the implementation of the "Crime Stoppers" campaign and the annual "KOATs for KIDS" program. Ms. Roper has also served as news director, producer, reporter and photographer since joining KOAT back in 1977. Congratulations, Mary Lynn Roper on winning the AAF NM 2013 Silver Medal Award! About the Silver Medal Award The AAF’s Silver Medal Award Program was established in 1959 to recognize men and women who have made outstanding contributions to advertising and who have been active in furthering the industry’s standards, creative excellence and responsibility in areas of social concern. Annually, the American Advertising Federation New Mexico bestows this honor upon an outstanding member of the local advertising community. The recipient is selected by a distinguished panel of former Silver Medal winners. DESOLATION BLUES: THE GOTHIC TRESPASS IN THE LIFE AND SONGWRITING OF TENNESSEE BLUES MUSICIAN RAY CASHMAN Victor Bouvéron A thesis submitted to the faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Folklore in the American Studies Department. Chapel Hill 2017 Approved by: William Ferris Glenn Hinson Crystal O’Leary-Davidson © 2017 Victor Bouvéron ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Victor Bouvéron: Desolation blues: The Gothic trespass in the life and songwriting of Tennessee blues musician Ray Cashman (Under the direction of William Ferris) This thesis explores the pervading feeling of the Gothic in the life and songwriting of Tennessee blues musician Ray Cashman. I argue that Cashman emotionally responds to the South through the framework of the Gothic to assert his identity as a white southern working- class male. As a reader, writer and performer, he trespasses the lines of race and class. The ethnographic fieldwork I conducted in Tennessee, Georgia and North Carolina between 2015 and 2017 led me to reflect on the intriguing relationship between blues, southern Gothic literature and white working-class culture in the South. The songs written by Cashman often express a feeling of desolation, bleakness and decay, invoke a sense of nostalgia for a bygone time, or describe eerie landscapes and supernatural presences. Cashman also retells southern Gothic stories, like “Snake Feast,” inspired by Harry Crews’s A Feast of Snakes. iii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS This project started the day I met Bill Ferris in Lille, France, in 2013. Bill encouraged me to apply to UNC-Chapel Hill and introduced me to the field of folklore.

Dua's musical style influences southern rock, outlaw country and non-oundial state. History Members of the Osborne brothers, John and Thomas John T.J.
