2 American Advertising Federation New Mexico | American Advertising Awards 2014 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Welcome to the 2013 American Advertising Federation New Mexico ADDY Awards I became a member of the New Mexico advertising community after transplanting from Los Angeles about 13 years ago. Over the past few years, it has been truly remarkable to watch what was once a market that was dominated by a very small handful of agencies grow into a thriving “ad town” whose work can regularly compete with the best in the country. Every year the body of work submitted to the American Advertising Awards (the ADDYs) continues to grow in quality and scale (and this year’s entries were no exception). It has been my great honor to serve as your president this year, and I am so proud of all of the work we will be showcasing at this year’s American Advertising Awards event. I would also like to thank all of the valuable sponsors that have helped make this event possible: Clear Channel Outdoor Entourage Jazz Free Karate Design Heritage AV Live Nation March Direct Marketing McKee Wallwork & Co. National CineMedia NewCastle Mortgage Starline Printing You Oughta be in Pixels I would also like to express my appreciation to our Public Service Media Partners and sponsors whose support allows the AAF New Mexico to provide valuable education and advocacy to the advertising industry in the area. Congratulations to all of the entrants and winners of tonight’s show. I know I speak for the entire AAF NM Board when I say that we are so proud to have the opportunity to work alongside all of you each and every day. Cheers, Adam Greenhood Adam 2013-2014 President American Advertising Federation New Mexico

2 American Advertising Federation New Mexico | American Advertising Awards 2014 American Advertising Federation New Mexico | American Advertising Awards 2014 3 PRESIDENT’S AWARD

Each year we bestow a very special award on a group, organization or individual who has made a difference in advertising in New Mexico. The winner of the AAF New Mexico Presidents Award is determined by the AAF-NM President and Board of Directors. This year's recipient is Mr. Sterling Grant III. Sterling first honed his craft as a commercial editor and director by working along side his father (Silver Medal Winner, Sterling Grant Jr.) at Sterling Sterling Grant III Productions. Sterling III would later move on to become one of the most sought after editors and directors working in the state of New Mexico. His work has received numerous ADDY awards as well as top honors at a variety of respected film festivals. Within our advertising community, Sterling was known for his extreme talent and larger than life persona. It is my great honor to award this year's President's Award to Sterling Grant III.

About the President’s Award The President’s Award was created in 1997 to recognize companies and individuals that have made an outstanding contribution to the advertising profession in New Mexico. The award is different from the Silver Medal Award in that it may recognize a company; a person who has contributed a single, yet significant achievement; or a younger individual who has not yet established a lifetime of accomplishment.

4 American Advertising Federation New Mexico | American Advertising Awards 2014 SILVER MEDAL AWARD

Mary Lynn Roper

This year's Silver Medal Award goes to Ms. Mary Lynn Roper. Ms. Roper is currently the President and GM of KOAT and considered one of the most influential broadcast decision makers in New Mexico. Along with being one of the first female GM's of any major TV network affiliate in the country, she is also best known (by the general public) for her years as co-anchor of “Action 7 News.” Ms. Roper has not only held the top leadership position at KOAT-ABC7 for over 20 years, she is also the current Chair of the New Mexico Broadcasters Association. Along with her day to day duties of running a television station, Ms. Roper is also dedicated to every community service initiative that KOAT is involved in, including the implementation of the "Crime Stoppers" campaign and the annual "KOATs for KIDS" program. Ms. Roper has also served as news director, producer, reporter and photographer since joining KOAT back in 1977. Congratulations, Mary Lynn Roper on winning the AAF NM 2013 Silver Medal Award!

About the Silver Medal Award The AAF’s Silver Medal Award Program was established in 1959 to recognize men and women who have made outstanding contributions to advertising and who have been active in furthering the industry’s standards, creative excellence and responsibility in areas of social concern. Annually, the American Advertising Federation New Mexico bestows this honor upon an outstanding member of the local advertising community. The recipient is selected by a distinguished panel of former Silver Medal winners.

LOCAL ONLY – CLIENT OF THE YEAR

fter successfully launching its new DWI awareness campaign, ENDWI, with our agency, VWK, in the second half of 2012, NMDOT supported the expansion of the ENDWI brand for 2013. Having already embraced the graphic, shorthand moniker, ENDWI, and knowing that the key DWI demographic is a mostly male, media savvy, 18-34 year old, NMDOT enthusiastically encouraged the exploration of new techniques ENTRANT: VWK to reach its audience. Furthermore, the client fully supported the ENDWI strategy: that it is everyone’s responsibility to help ENDWI — from individuals taking respon- sibility, to families and communities stepping up. ADVERTISER: New Mexico Department of Transportation ANMDOT does their part by providing awareness campaigns that address the consequences of driving drunk, as well as campaigns designed to specifically reach a younger, more irreverent crowd and encouraging them to take responsibility. The client welcomed the creation of the “Dwight Goodman/ Personal Assistant” character and enthusiastically supported the development of an entire online and so- CREDITS: cial media campaign presence. And, toward the end of the year, NMDOT supported a robust update and Michael Sandoval, Client: Director NMDOT - promotion of the ENDWI smart phone app that puts the power to ENDWI in the palm of people’s hands. Traffic Safety Division At the same time, NMDOT has been fearless in its pursuit to address some of the systemic causes behind DWI behavior, the most significant of which is Under Age Drinking. VWK worked with the department to developand launch a campaign that offers tweens options to choose besides drinking. The campaign, Client of the Year Candidate branded as MY INSTEAD, has been designed to encourage pro-active behavior on the part of tweens to Richard Kuhn, Principal / ECD / ASU choose a constructive action rather than picking up alcohol. And again, NMDOT embraced all innovative New Mexico Department of Transportation avenues to get this message out. This included a series of interactive videos on a MY INSTEAD website which encouraged kids to choose an ending to the video. Plus the site has tons of great information Nick Tauro, Broadcast Creative Director / regarding under age drinking and its consequences. And, because the site is addressing a young audience, it also has to appeal to parents to get their buy-in, so the site is designed for that adult access, while not hindering the kids’ space. Finally, the entire program is being launched through the Copywriter public school systems with tool kits being sent to teachers throughout New Mexico. Each kit contains a sample teachers guide about underage drinking and choosing options, as well as incentive giveaways and promotional materials — all of which tie back to the MY INSTEAD campaign and the chance to win prizes Rudi Backart, Designer based on video and story entries. Earned media response has been significant throughout all of the campaigns, gaining the client even more public awareness about their cause. The results speak for themselves. The ENDWI app has already Rebecca Hahs, Designer been installed 13,000 times (mostly in New Mexico). And, when VWK began its work with NMDOT in 2005, the state ranked as one of the worst in the country, at 219 DWI related fatalities. By the end of 2012, DWI related fatalities had dropped to 155 (a 30% decrease). More dramatically, the ongoing expansion Mario Moreno, Production Artist of the ENDWI campaign via both dramatic and humorous TV and video, social videos, social media, an iPhone and Android app, and other more traditional media and events during 2013 have clearly had a significant impact. There were no new laws or policies or increased enforcement, only the launch and implementation of ENDWI strategy and tactics. And as of the writing of this entry, unofficial numbers Dianne De Leon, Account Supervisor indicate that there were 126 DWI related fatalities in 2013 compared to 155 in 2012 (a 20% decline in one year), and a record low for New Mexico.

Joel Sexton, Webmaster / Programmer NMDOT deserves Client of The Year because of their no-holds-barred attitude when it comes to developing innovative ways to raise public awareness, change behavior and save lives. Vincent Thome, Social Media Coordinator / Writer
