Ernest Briggs' Three Decades its help in allowing artists of the period to go to school. SEYMOUR BOARDMAN “PERSONAL GEOMETRIES” A Selection 1940’s—2000’s Untitled, 1949, O/c, 32 1/2” x 49 1/2” Untitled, 2001, O/c, 42 1/2” x 52 1/2” samplePublished 2013 by the Anita Shapolsky Gallery Seymour (Sy) Boardman (1921–2005) After opening my gallery in Soho (99 Spring St) in 1982 and exhibiting mostly decorative art, I searched for quality artists. I saw Sy Boardman’s work at the David Anderson Gallery collection (son of Martha Jackson) on West 57th St. He was not in vogue, as was the case for most Abstract Artists at the time. Minimalism and Pop Art were the flavors of the day in the 80’s. Sy had no gallery affiliation and I felt that he was a painter to consider. He created paintings that are unique, while avoiding fashionable art trends. I think his art education in Europe (through the GI Bill) influenced him to use the grid as an understructure of his paintings for Untitled, 1949, O/c, 18” x 24” many years. I consider Sy the most intellectual of all the artists that I have ever exhibited. His paintings resonate like jazz, ever evolving, the transcendence of improvisation is constant. He never went along with the group of Abstract Expressionists that he exhibited with. He liked jagged, architectural phrases, and beginning a line without knowing where it would end. He went through many stages in developing his oeuvre. Sy was called a geometric colorist and an abstract illusionist who contributed to the psychology of perception with the use of only one hand (the other was disabled in the war). -

The Bay Area School of Abstract Expressionism was centered around the California School of Fine Arts (CSFA) in San Francisco and its director, Douglas MacAgy. MacAgy was hired in 1945 in an effort to revitalize and modernize the overly- traditional program. He began by hiring a plethora of young artists, including Richard Diebenkorn, Stanley Hayter, and Clyfford Still, who, while largely inexperienced in teaching, were nevertheless instrumental in educating a wave of second- generation Abstract Expressionists. Like many of the students at the CSFA, Ernest Briggs, Lawrence Calcagno, John Hultberg, and Jon Schueler used their assistance from the GI Bill to enroll in the program shortly after their return from service in World War II. Their shared experiences in the war, along with their closeness in age, allowed the professors and students to form a strong, supportive, and often collaborative atmosphere. While the CSFA cultivated its own unique school of abstract art, it also exposed its students to New York abstract artists like Mark Rothko and Ad Reinhardt through summer sessions from 1947 to 1949. -

Born between 1914 and 1937, these artists have participated in national and international exhibitions. The decade into which each artist was born shaped their different perspectives. They have enlisted a variety of approaches and aesthetic influences over the span of six decades. They invoke through abstraction an art of light, color, materials, gesture, sweep and space. (excerpt from catalog) Mary Anne Rose, Ed. D. Betty Blayton Blayton was born in 1937 in Williamsburg, Virginia, and educated at Syracuse University, NY (BFA 1959), as well as at The Art Students League of New York and the Brooklyn Museum School. With major solo exhibitions at Howard University Gallery, Syracuse University Gallery, and Adair Gallery in Atlanta GA, her work is in public and private collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Studio Museum in Harlem, Fisk University, Spellman College, and the Rockefeller Collection. Her honors include the Women’s Caucus for the Arts “Life Time Achievement Award” (2005) and “New York State Governor’s Art Award” (1989). Frank Bowling Born in 1936 in Bartica, Essequibo, Guyana, Frank Bowling was schooled in London at Regent Street Polytechnic, Chelsea School of Art (1957-1959) and at the Slade School of Art, Royal College of Art (1959-1962). Selected museum collections include the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Fine Arts London, and Tate Gallery (London). Ed Clark Born in 1926 in New Orleans, Louisiana, Ed Clark served in the Air Force in World War II. -

The Pamphlet Files 1 The Pamphlet Files The Pamphlet Files were established as an original NYPL resource, part of the Library’s traditional and strong interest in the preservation of ephemera. Some of the material in these files dates back to the late nineteenth century. The Pamphlet Files are often the only record that a gallery or organization existed. They are not catalogued, and there are no references to them in our online catalogue. These files include exhibition brochures, fliers, small group exhibition catalogues, gallery announcements, newsletters and other ephemera relating to galleries, museums, colleges and universities, professional associations, foundations, non- profit organizations, and other arts organizations. While this collection consists of material predominantly from New York City and state, it also contains many files from throughout the United States, Europe, Central and South America. In addition, there are files for one-time arts events and movements, such as “New York State Exposition” and “Art for Peace.” The list of entries is arranged in alphabetical order; for galleries that have a given name and a surname, i.e. “Martha Jackson Gallery,” the entry will be alphabetized according to the first name.
