Issue : 81 3 August, 2019 Need to tackle stray dog menace The recent incident in Karanjade node of two people- a child and a senior citizen- being bitten by a stray dog has once again highlighted the increasing numbers of stray dogs not only in Pan- vel node but across Navi Mumbai. The increasing number of stray dogs which has now turned into a menace is due to lack of proper sterilization system by the mu- nicipal corporation to keep the stray dog population under check. Another reason that we see stray dogs all over the city is lack of proper shelters and food for them to survive. As there is no prop- er system that ensures timely food and water, these furry animals, are seen hunting for food near garbage or they tend to go near people when they see bags in hands thinking it is food which at times turns into a conflict between human and dogs. Another issue is that the fewer NGO or groups in the city that work towards stray dogs don’t get proper timely support from the authorities owing to which just a few number of strays are taken care of. The City and Industrial Development Corporation (CI- DCO), Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) and Panvel City Municipal Corporation (PCMC) should collectively along with registered NGOs should come up with policies that can deal with the problem. All three governing bodies should come up with temporary shel- ter in each node so that the dogs can be properly housed. While NGOs and animal lovers can provide food and water to strays time to time which will ensure they don’t venture out much for food and stay within their territory.
