Landmarks Preservation Commission October 29, 2002, Designation List 340 LP-2118 RITZ TOWER, 465 Park Avenue (aka 461-465 Park Avenue, and 101East5T11 Street), Manhattan. Built 1925-27; Emery Roth, architect, with Thomas Hastings. Landmark Site: Borough of Manhattan Tax Map Block 1312, Lot 70. On July 16, 2002 the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of the Ritz Tower, and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site (Item No.2). The hearing had been advertised in accordance with provisions of law. Ross Moscowitz, representing the owners of the cooperative spoke in opposition to designation. At the time of designation, he took no position. Mark Levine, from the Jamestown Group, representing the owners of the commercial space, took no position on designation at the public hearing. Bill Higgins represented these owners at the time of designation and spoke in favor. Three witnesses testified in favor of designation, including representatives of State Senator Liz Kruger, the Landmarks Conservancy and the Historic Districts Council. In addition, the Commission has received letters in support of designation from Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney, from Community Board Five, and from architectural hi storian, John Kriskiewicz. There was also one letter from a building resident opposed to designation. Summary The Ritz Tower Apartment Hotel was constructed in 1925 at the premier crossroads of New York's Upper East Side, the comer of 57t11 Street and Park A venue, where the exclusive shops and artistic enterprises of 57t11 Street met apartment buildings of ever-increasing height and luxury on Park Avenue. -

She assisted cutter Viola Lawrence on Man, Woman, Marriage (1921) and became a cutter in her own right at MGM in the early 1920s. She remained an editor there until her death in 1949. She went to Lisbon to study Philosophy but she didn't finish the course and returned to Funchal to dedicate herself exclusively to writing. Annenberg Community Beach House Santa Monica, CA Precaster: Mid- State Precast, Corcoran, CA Website: www.midstateprecast.com The Annenberg Community Beach House project is the rehabilitation and adaptive reuse of the historic 5 1/2- acre Marion Davies Estate originally constructed in the 1920s. The design of the new pool house reinterprets the key historical elements of the original structure. Central to the architect’s design was the reinvention of the original columns through the use of symbolic columns along the pool house exterior. The architect’s aesthetic vision called for a highly refined concrete mixture and special Original Marion Davies Beach mansion form system to create these columns. The precaster worked closely with the architect to develop samples of the mixture, final texture, and lift/brace points. The resulting precast concrete columns, with their perfect color, shape, and harmony, are as dramatic as the columns of nearly a century ago. So what's so special about the beach house? Hollywood history. For as long as they’ve made films in Hollywood, those with power and money have flocked to Santa Monica. I n the 1920s, the beach north of the Santa Monica Pier was known as the Gold Coast because the people who built houses there were rich and celebrated, among them were four of the men who created Hollywood; Irving Thalberg and his wife, actress Norma Shearer, oil man J. Paul Getty, comedian Harold Lloyd and leading man Douglas Fairbanks. William Randolph Hearst might have been the first media mogul of the 20th Century. FINAL DRAFT – FOR CITY COUNCIL APPROVAL City of Palm Springs Citywide Historic Context Statement & Survey Findings HISTORIC RESOURCES GROUP 49 CONTEXT: PALM SPRINGS BETWEEN THE WARS (1919-1941) Overview This context explores the transformation of Palm Springs from a modest spa town into a luxury winter resort in the years between the First and Second World Wars. By 1918 Nellie Coffman and her sons, George Roberson and Earl Coffman, understood the town’s potential, not as a health spa for asthmatics and consumptives, but as an exclusive winter resort for the well-to-do, and set about transforming their sanatorium into the luxurious Desert Inn, one of the most renowned hostelries in the country. Their success inspired the development of two equally spectacular hotels in the 1920s and cemented the town’s growing reputation as one of the country’s premier luxury winter resorts. These were the Oasis Hotel (121 S. Palm Canyon Drive; HSPB-10), designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, Jr. (known as Lloyd Wright) and opened in 1925 by Pearl McCallum McManus;97 and the grand Hotel El Mirador (1150 N.
