PERFORMING ARTS DEPARTMENT INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC TEAM - 2016 At King’s we have a dynamic Instrumental Music program incorporating a wide variety of instruments. Lessons are conducted during the school day and cater for beginners through to experienced musicians. Tuition is available in small groups and individually in Woodwind, Strings, Brass and Percussion as well as Piano, Guitar and Voice. Students also have the opportunity to join one of our Bands or Orchestras. Music is definitely alive and flourishing at King’s and we welcome all enquiries from budding musicians. Music tuition benefits children in so many ways. It improves memory, can lift academic outcomes, builds confidence and encourages self-expression. I play a few instruments, including the alto saxophone (which I teach and have a diploma in) as well as piano and my favourite part of the week during high school was the show choir. I started my cello studies in the school music program in year 3 and continued private lessons and orchestras as a side to all my many interests at the time. Some great motivations and fondest musical memories came from my participation in the Gold Coast Youth Orchestras and then the Queensland Youth Orchestras. I worked my way steadily up the tiers in AMEB grades and the orchestras and the progression lead me in year 12 to be fit for the Conservatorium despite it never being a career option I considered. I must admit I never thought I'd become a teacher or a musician for a career but it's the most beautiful and rewarding thing in the world, I am so grateful I ended up where I am in a place where I can be creative, and inspire the future leaders of the world! If we can teach them to make music, appreciate art and be harmonious together- the world will surely be a better place! Danny Lee—Percussion Teacher Danny has been engaged in music since the very early stage of his life when he began playing drums in his church band. His deep interest in drums and percussion dictated his life throughout his teenage years, allowing his to perform in various bands and jazz ensembles. In 2008,Danny was accepted into The University of Queensland to study percussion with Michael Askill and Tom O’Kelly. After finishing the degree he continues to learn, perform and teach drums. Currently, Danny is busy with his teaching at various number of schools. His students range from primary school students to those who are mature adults. He loves the process of providing the young students with musical training and seeing them gradually develop to their potential. Danny is open to a wide range of music which includes pop, rock, Latin, jazz, funk, classical and many more. Eddie Bray—Woodwind Teacher Eddie Bray served as a professional musician for 20 years with the Australian Defence Force Bands. A Sergeant in the Australian Army Band and as a Petty Officer with the Royal Australian Navy Band. His career included postings in Australia & New Zealand. A career highlight was his posting to the prestigious Australian Defence Force School of Music as the Saxophone & Clarinet Woodwind Specialist Teacher. For " Outstanding service to the Band of the Royal Military College Duntroon Canberra, Eddie was awarded an Australia Day Medallion ". With more than 2000 gigs to his credit along with numerous CD recordings and TV commercial performances, Eddie has also toured and performed with many artists such as; James Morrison, Don Burrows, Margaret Urlich NZ, Grace Knight, Jon English, Tina Arena....just to name a few. With his ability to double on Sax, Clarinet & Flute, Eddie has been in demand performing for many professional musical productions around the country. Two consecutive professional seasons of Les Miserables being a highlight. Eddie has also performed as a soloist with the Canberra Symphony Orchestra under Conductor Richard Bonynge AC, CBE. At the core of Eddie's teaching philosophy is equal imparting of knowledge to any student who has the desire to learn, and to make students aware that they must transform this knowledge through further investigation to enable creation of their own musical voice. Eddie is currently employed at King's Christian College as the specialist Woodwind teacher and Conductor of the Senior " Vivace " Concert Band, and Junior " Allegro " Band. A recent highlight was performing for the highly successful College Musical " The Wiz ". Eddie was thrilled to perform alongside students, ex-students and staff. Eddie is currently playing in two Brisbane based bands, and recently performed at the Brisbane Jazz Club. A keen surfer too, Eddie loves to surf on the beautiful Gold Coast. Kylie Guthrig—Strings Teacher KYLIE GUTHRIG (formally Bartsch), violinist and pianist, has won numerous prizes and scholarships for performance, including the Baldwin National Keyboard Competition and the Don Maynard Prize for Matriculation Music (awarded to the highest candidate in South Australia). Kylie holds a Bachelor of Music (Performance) degree and a Graduate Diploma in Education from the University of Adelaide. She also has extensive experience as an accompanist and orchestral musician, including membership of the State Opera of S.A. Orchestra and the Australian Youth Orchestra. In Cambridge, U.K., Kylie led the Cambridge University 2nd Orchestra and was a member of the 1st Orchestra, her time there culminating in a performance of the Verdi “Requiem” in King’s College Chapel directed by Stephen Cleobury. Whilst in England, Kylie also was a member of the Ensemble Duparc, Monteverdi Ensemble, Hertfordshire Philharmonic Orchestra and Degani Players. Since her return to Australia, Kylie has taught in South Brisbane and Ararat, Western Victoria, before moving to the Gold Coast and taking up her current position of Instrumental Music Teacher (Strings) at King’s in 2009. This year she is excited to also springboard the new program “Strings @ Pimpama”. Patrick Emery—Brass Teacher In 2005, Patrick completed a Bachelor of Music at the University of Adelaide, majoring in Jazz Trumpet Performance. He completed his Graduate Diploma of Education through Monash University. From 2006 Patrick taught instrumental music brass for the IMS in South Australia. From 2009 until just recently, he was employed as a classroom music, instrumental music brass and band director at Ballarat High School in Victoria. He also has an extensive performance history as a trumpet player and song writer, performing in jazz, funk, hiphop and electronic bands, as well as in classical chamber groups and orchestras. Joanna Funk—Piano Tutor, Reedy Creek and Pimpama I teach piano in Primary, Middle and High school, at Reedy Creek and Pimpama campuses. My greatest pleasure is teaching beginners of all ages; watching them grow from first notes to complete songs is really a privilege, for me and for you! John Argyle—Voice Tutor John studied in London at the Royal Academy of Music and Exeter University in England where he gained a teaching degree. He has taught at many schools both in England and Australia, having moved here in 1975. He has lectured at the University of Tasmania and at Melbourne University. John has directed choirs and orchestras throughout his career and taught Piano, Singing and Theory. He is the present organist at Robina Anglican Church. John has been a teacher all his life and lives for his students. He believes in teaching for fun and enjoyment, leading towards excellence in music education. Roy Williamson—Guitar Tutor Roy is a professional entertainer and guitar teacher. He comes with many years of experience in teaching and performing. His studies have included all facets of guitar and teaches at all levels - classical, rock and contemporary. Roy has a desire to share this gift of music with others and believes in bringing out the artistic side of the students. Justin Husband – Guitar Tutor, Pimpama My name is Justin Husband and I am the guitar teacher at Kings Christians College at the Pimpama campus. I have only been on the Gold Coast for just over a year now since I moved down to study at the Queensland Conservatorium of music at Griffith University in Southport. I have played guitar for 9 years (since I was 12) and have been playing professionally for 6. I moved here from a small country town in North Queensland called Charters Towers from which I was born and raised. After graduating high school, I decided I would love to teach guitar and help tutor school bands and I landed a teaching job at two high schools in Charters Towers. After two years in this position, I decided I wanted to further my education of music and guitar and make the move to the Gold Coast and audition for the Conservatorium. I love all genres of music and strive to help your kids achieve their musical goals. I believe there is nothing better than watching a student of yours progress and knowing that you've helped nurture a skill that can stay with them for the rest of their lives.
