English language. doi: 10.1386/josc.4.3.335_7 Conference Report David Rolinson University of Stirling Report on The Singing Detective 25th Anniversary Symposium, University of London, 10 December 2011 [I]n keeping with the modernist sensibility and self-reflexivity of Hide and Seek and Only Make Believe, the decision to root a view of the past in the experiences and imagination of a writer protagonist, emphasises the fact that, far from being an objective assessment, any perspective on history can only ever be subjective. (Cook 1998: 217) This one-day symposium, organized by the Department of Media Arts at Royal Holloway, University of London, celebrated the 25th anniversary of Dennis Potter’s The Singing Detective (tx. BBC1, 16 November 1986–21 December 1986). As the notes for the event explained, it sought to pay trib- ute to the BBC serial’s ‘narrative complexity, generic hybridity and formal experimentation’ and to bring scholars and practitioners together ‘to assess its subsequent influence upon television drama and the cinema’. Dennis Potter: An Unconventional Dramatist Dennis Potter (1935–1994), graduate of New College, was one of the most innovative and influential television dramatists of the twentieth century, known for works such as single plays Son of Man (1969), Brimstone and Treacle (1976) and Blue Remembered Hills (1979), and serials Pennies from Heaven (1978), The Singing Detective (1986) and Blackeyes (1989). Often controversial, he pioneered non-naturalistic techniques of drama presentation and explored themes which were to recur throughout his work. I. Early Life and Background He was born Dennis Christopher George Potter in Berry Hill in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire on 17 May 1935, the son of a coal miner. He would later describe the area as quite isolated from everywhere else (‘even Wales’).1 As a child he was an unusually bright pupil at the village primary school (which actually features as a location in ‘Pennies From Heaven’) as well as a strict attender of the local chapel (‘Up the hill . usually on a Sunday, sometimes three times to Salem Chapel . .’).2 Even at a young age he was writing: I knew that the words were chariots in some way. I didn’t know where it was going … but it was so inevitable … I cannot think of the time really when I wasn’t [a writer].3 The language of the Bible, the images it created, resonated with him; he described how the local area ‘became’ places from the Bible: Cannop Ponds by the pit where Dad worked, I knew that was where Jesus walked on the water … the Valley of the Shadow of Death was that lane where the overhanging trees were.4 I always fall back into biblical language, but that’s … part of my heritage, which I in a sense am grateful for.5 He was also a ‘physically cowardly’6 and ‘cripplingly shy’7 child who felt different from the other children at school, a feeling heightened by his being academically more advanced. -

Media Heritage and Memory in the Museum: Managing Dennis Potter’s Legacy in the Forest of Dean Hannah Arlia Grist A thesis submitted to The University of Gloucestershire in accordance with the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Faculty of Media, Art and Technology January 2015 Abstract This research explores the ways in which Dennis Potter (1935-1994) is made inheritable to audiences through a rural Heritage Lottery Funded project. With the sale of the written Potter Archive to the Dean Heritage Centre, Gloucestershire, in 2010, this study explores in great detail the processes enacted to interpret the Potter Archive as cultural (television) heritage. Through a creative and innovative research design which utilises autoethnography, inventive qualitative methods and a level of quantitative analysis, this study examines the ways in which Potter is made intelligible to past television audiences, project members and collaborators, local people, and the casual tourist within the heritage environment. A unique and irreproducible study, this interdisciplinary research sits as a contribution to an emerging field that is located at the interface between Memory studies and Museum Studies and explores the way various forms of mediation are connected to these fields. Inherently at stake in this research is the valorisation of television as heritage, as Potter remains well within living memory. Through proximate and intimate connections to this multifaceted heritage project this work represents one of the first interventions to explore turning television into heritage at a local level drawing together the macro level of cultural policy with the micro level of enacting that policy. -

He produced a body of work specifically for television that redefined TV drama, daring to challenge both commissioners’ and viewers’ perceptions of the format. Ken Trodd, who was Potter’s producer for most of his career and who is co-curator of the Messages for Posterity season - says ‘what Dennis left is an enormous, daunting, inviting and revealing feast of brilliance. I’m still astonished by the freshness and originality of it all. Tune in, watch, and feel yourself grow!’ These screenings build a picture of a complex man of great conviction, a man who passionately believed in the power of TV drama. -
