Introduction The existence of a positive (self) image of a people is very important in the successful struggle for self-determination. An image can be constructed through various methods. This paper deals with the way in which an incorrect image of the Rehoboth Basters was constructed via the literature. Subjects that are considered interesting or popular, usually have a great number of different publications and authors. A large quantity of publications almost inevitably means that there is more information available on that specific topic. Author’s Note I learned such a great deal from this entire honors capstone project, that all the knowledge I have acquired can hardly be covered by what I wrote in these 50 pages. I learned so much more that I was not able to share both about Namibia and myself. I can now claim that I am knowledgeable about nearly all areas of Namibian history and life. I certainly am no expert, but after all of this research I can certainly consider myself reliable. I have never had such an extensive knowledge before of one academic area as a result of a school project. I also learned a lot about myself through this project. I learned how I can motivate myself to work, and I learned how I perform when I have to organize such a long and complicated paper, just to name a couple of things. The strange inability to be able to include everything I learned from doing this project is the reason for some of the more random appendices at the end, as I have a passion for both numbers and trivia. -

Independence brought to an end one of the most intractable and wasteful conflicts in the region. With independence, the people of Namibia not only gained political freedom, but set out on the challenging task of building a nation and defining their relations with the world. From the perspective of mediation, the role of the international community in bringing about Namibia's independence in general, and that of the United Nations in particular, was of a deep structural nature. -

Four Namibian churchmen made a month-long visit to Western nations to express their feelings about the unending, agonizing occupation of their country by the South African regime and the fruitless talks on a Namibian settlement which the .Western Contact Group - the USA, Britain, France ,West Germany and Canada - has staged for five long years . Anglican Bishop James Kauluma, presi- dent of the Council of Churches in Namibia ; Bishop Kleopas Du neni of the Evangelical Luth- eran Ovambokavango Church ; Pastor Albertus Maasdorp, general secretary of the CCN ;, and the, assistant to Bishop D,mmeni, Pastor Absalom Hasheela, were accompanied by a representative of the South African Council of Churches and the general secretary of the All Africa Coun- cil of Oburches which sponsored the trip . The main factor influencing vegetation here, is rainfall. Topography plays a very important paralel role related with an additional distribution of rainwater by the superficial drainage of hills and mountains to the neighbouring flats " and slopes. Concerning the soils, it appears that the physical structure is of more importance than the chemical composition, as this (the structure) determines the availability of water for root development. - Iu some specific instances the soil seems to have a marked effect on the vegetation such as the superficial calcareous layer in south-eastern Kaokoland. The influence of the watersheds is also well marked in deter- mining vegetation types, whether floristic or physiognomic. In addition both physiognomic features and floristic composi- tion have been used to determine the boundaries of the various vegetation types as described. As a result of this historical presence, it was expected that the church would take a proactive role in the reconciliation of the Namibian people in the new independent country. However, efforts toward church-led reconciliation were quickly quashed by a weakening of ecumenical bonds concerning social and political issues. Those detained are believed to be held under the terms of Bophuthatswana's state of emergency provisions, which permit any security force officer to detain a person without charge for an initial period of 30 days. Detention can then be renewed for a further five months on the authority of the Minister of Law and Order, and the detainee has no automatic right of access to a lawyer, doctor, or visits from relatives. One of those detained is Jomo Khasu, a long-time political activist from Vryburg in Northern Cape province who is now senior ANC regional organizer for the Northern Cape. -
