These imaginary Tlingit are led by a mixed race chief who speaks perfect English when he confronts Bill and Jack London later in the show. Jack London? Well, for all that he’s scribbling down phrases like “burning daylight” this can’t be the actual Jack, since he hadn’t yet reached the Klondike during the time frame the show is using. Speaking of time frames, there’s a lovely shot of the Aurora Borealis against the dark night sky, except that the scene is supposed to take place sometime in July or early August and, well … Land of the Midnight Sun and all that. As for lovely, if you’ve seen pictures of Belinda Mulroney you’d know that she was a plain lady who wore glasses, a far cry from the svelte young woman with the cleavage revealing blouses and dangerous looking six shooter portrayed in the show, not to mention that her big success as a hotelier was out on the creeks, not in town. Oh – and those pistols. They’re all over the place. The North-West Mounted Police would never have allowed it. Then there’s Father Judge’s storefront chapel in downtown Dawson. The actual site for St. Mary’s and the hospital he went on to build was in the town’s North End, under the shadow of the Moosehide Slide. Ah well. Historical inaccuracies aside, it’s a bit of fun, and picking up on the flaws is part of that. I simply wish they wouldn’t try to pretend that it was anything else. It’s taken some time this year, more than usual, but an official ice bridge across the has been constructed. This version is slightly south of the informal trail created a couple of months ago by West Dawson residents, but it follows the same general path for most of the way.

From the ferry landing you drive south next to the west bank about one kilometre to approximately opposite the RCMP Detachment. From there, a straight and very wide crossing has been levelled and refrozen, leading to the lower dike road on the east bank. This road leads to an off ramp that dumps traffic on to Front Street opposite the small park that is situated between Front and Craig Streets.

After a goodly stretch of freezing cold weather over the holiday period, the latter part of January brought weather so mild that a recent weekend’s hockey tournament had to end before the final playoff games when the ice got too soft to play on. What thatSun's kind of weather is doing to the new ice bridge is an open question (beg pardon), but as of a few days before the deadline certain spots have been marked off with barriers at both ends of the stretch.

SUN

The Sun obtained funding in late 2009 from the City of Dawson, YTG’s Heritage Branch and the Community Development Fund to conserve and archive early issues and make them available once again in the public domain. This is a great resource for students, writers and historians, and also for prospective tourists with an interest in Dawson City’s life. Each month, we are re-printing our front pages from 20 years ago (seen above) as a souvenir of our lively history. If you want to see page 2 and beyond, check out our website. Past issues are available there for download. Go to http://klondikesun.com. More will be added periodically (heh) when we have time!
