93RD ANNUAL TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES AND NATURAL RESOURCES PIG ROAST
The annual Pig Roast is a time-honored tradition of the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources. The first Pig Roast was held in 1927 as a sendoff celebration for the Livestock Judging Team on their way to compete for the championship. Each year since, it has been a celebration of success and prosperity. The event has evolved and grown over the years to become one of the largest and oldest traditions on campus, aside from a sporting event.
Today, the Pig Roast serves as the premiere event of the year, at which we highlight competitive team successes, recognize scholarship recipients, and honor scholarship donors. The occasion provides us an opportunity to say, Thank You, to the individuals and companies who have assisted in the activities of CASNR and its students.
The printed program for the Pig Roast started as just a couple pages stapled together and has grown into a booklet of more than 30 pages, 340 scholarships, and 550 graduate and undergraduate student recipients.
CASNR is known across campus for its scholarship program, having one of the largest endowments and awarding one of the highest number of scholarships among the colleges each year. Almost half of CASNR students receive at least one scholarship, and the total funding reaches more than $4 million annually.
After 10 consecutive years of record enrollment growth in CASNR, the need for scholarship funding is greater than ever. The students relish the opportunity to show their appreciation to their scholarship donors each year. They realize they would not be able to attend college or engage in internships, leadership programs, team competitions, or study abroad if not for the generosity of the college’s supporters.

The Pig Roast is hosted by the Student Agricultural Council of the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources. The Student Agricultural Council is composed of two representatives from each of the departmental clubs and the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources’ Student Senators. A representative from the Office of the Dean of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources serves as a sponsor.
The purpose of the Student Agricultural Council is to establish a working relationship between students, faculty, administration and the agricultural community for the betterment of the students and the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources.
The goals of the Agricultural Council are: 1. To establish sound relations among agricultural students. 2. To establish a common bond among agricultural organizations at Texas Tech. 3. To foster better relations with the faculty. 4. To establish better communications within the university system. 5. To strive to maintain and improve relations within the agricultural community.
The annual Pig Roast is only one of the functions sponsored by the Agricultural Council to attain these goals.

The College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources has a long history of success and accomplishments in intercollegiate competition. The various judging teams, academic teams and equestrian teams are integral parts of the College and our students’ education.
In fact, the College had a judging pavilion before it had a classroom. The Livestock Judging Pavilion was one of the first buildings on the Texas Tech campus and one of the College’s two initial buildings. Over the years, the Pavilion has been one of the most versatile buildings on campus—livestock judging, basketball games, Pig Roast and landscape architecture studio. Today, it still symbolizes the commitment to and importance of intercollegiate teams as a critical educational component of the College.
The first Pig Roast, held in 1927 at the Livestock Pavilion, was a send-off for the livestock judging team prior to their departure for the International Livestock Exposition in Chicago. A pig was roasted in a pit and the meal was enjoyed by the judging team and all who came to support them. Every year since, the Pig Roast has honored the College’s intercollegiate teams in this time-honored tradition.

College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources / Texas Tech University 93RD ANNUAL PIG ROAST 3 CASNR Competitive Teams: A Heritage in Success
The 2019-2020 academic year was a banner one for the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources’ competitive teams, carrying on the tradition of success. The Department of Plant and Soil Science laid the groundwork with a decades-long string of national titles beginning in the 1940’s. Between 1947 and 1970, its Crop Judging Team took no less than 34 championships. Meanwhile, Tech’s Meat Judging Team, Livestock Judging Team and Meat Science Academic Quiz Bowl Team have dominated the title rankings since the turn of the century.
Starting in November 2019 the Meat Judging Team, within the Department of Animal & Food Sciences, surged to victory at the American Meat Science Association (AMSA) Cargill High Plains Collegiate Meat Judging Contest led by three of the top four individual finishes.
The Meat Judging Team then capped the 2019 competitive season by capturing the program’s 14th national championship at the American Meat Science Association International Meat Judging Contest.
On February 2, 2020 the Meat Judging Team earned its first victory of the judging season at the AMSA Intercollegiate Meat Judging Contest, the 11th consecutive year for Texas Tech to win the contest. It is the longest winning streak in the contest’s history. Texas Tech rebounded from a fourth-place finish at the National Western contest in Denver earlier in the Spring 2020 semester with an impressive performance in Fort Worth, scoring 4,184 points to outdistance Big 12 Conference rivals Oklahoma State University (4,127 points) and Kansas State University (4,120).
Moreover, on November 12, 2019, the Texas Tech Ranch Horse Team won both the Stock Horse of Texas Collegiate World Championship and the SHTX Collegiate Reserve Championship at the Stock Horse of Texas Collegiate World Championships.

I’ll get to the bottom line, the endowments donors have set up to benefit our students through scholarships have been a godsend this year with all of the uncertainty that has taken place. We weren’t sure we’d have in-person learning from March up to mid-summer and nobody really knew where the economy was heading or if they’d have money to share with others. This brochure is a celebration of scholarship endowments, a celebration of the investment in the future of our great university and the students that come here to learn. Endowments serve as a commitment for the future – something that will remain in perpetuity, something from the past that we can hold onto as we ride the turbulent times.
It’s October and there’s ice out my window as I write, breaking branches off of trees, serving as a grim reminder of how so many things in 2020 are different than what they’ve been in the past. It’s safe to say, I think, that all of our lives have changed to a great degree even though some have changed more than others. Most everyone has tried as hard as they can to seize some sense of normalcy.
Typically, as we approach mid-November, in the Office of Development and Alumni Relations in the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources there are a flurry of activities surrounding preparations for the annual Pig Roast. This will be the first time in 93 years that our college hasn’t hosted some in-person version of the event. It’s the longest standing tradition of its type at Texas Tech University. I’m told that in the early days it was a gathering of judging teams and coaches but now it’s become a reunion of sorts and a celebration of generosity. Our attendance has blossomed over the years and we know people not only come to meet their scholarship recipients or celebrate a friend that is honored as an outstanding agriculturalist, they come to see each other. I love that. It feels like all the good stuff of a Thanksgiving family gathering.
The upheaval that a global pandemic creates is something that most of our own parents didn’t even experience. Focusing on the good things that haven’t changed and the ability to help other people are two things that bring comfort in troubled times. It’s a great feeling to know that our students value the college experience more than ever. It’s even better that our donors throughout the decades have given generously to ensure that scholarships can be provided to them.
We look forward to getting back together for next year’s Pig Roast and are thrilled to have a partner for the event. Lubbock’s new H-E-B Grocery has generously offered to be our sole sponsor and we are excited to work with their team to bring new excitement to the event.

The annual Pig Roast has long been a highlight of the academic year in the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources. Starting as an informal gathering of Texas Tech agriculture students some ninety one years ago, it has become a traditional event at which the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, its students, faculty, and administration honor teams and individuals who have distinguished themselves and the University during the past year. Scholarship donors and recipients, as well as outstanding leaders in the field of agriculture, are also recognized and honored. This event also provides an opportunity to say Thank You to individuals and companies who have assisted in activities of the College. The Pig Roast is sponsored by the Student Agricultural Council of the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources.
