  • The Village Community Among the Tangkhul Nagas of Manipur in the Nineteenth Century
================================================================== Language in India www.languageinindia.com ISSN 1930-2940 Vol. 15:2 February 2015 ================================================================== The Village Community among the Tangkhul Nagas of Manipur in the Nineteenth Century Console Zamreinao Shimrei, M.Phil., NET., Ph.D. Research Scholar =============================================== Abstract The Tangkhuls occupy the north eastern hill of Ukhrul District, Manipur. Tangkhul people know no other life except that of “community life”. In fact, they work in groups, eat in groups, work in groups and sleep in groups wherever there are. All things are done in groups and in the full presence of the entire community. The individuals have no existence apart from the community. Interestingly, there was no place for idle men in the Tangkhul Naga community. The principle “He who does not work, neither shall he eat” is adopted by the Tangkhul Nagas. All must work and participate in the community work - may it be house building, feasts of merit or harvesting, everyone must join the community work. In the nineteenth century, the farmers of the village community were very helpful in time of happiness and sorrow. There was no hierarchical system in the social set up. Collection of wooden materials and construction of house took only a few days. There was a strong sense of corporate responsibility present in the construction of any house including the chief’s house in the village which is an indivisible unit. The sense of collective accountability has been responsible for the integrity of the community. In the village community ‘Longshim’ or dormitory played the most vital important role in shaping young men’s and women’s life.

Among various components of the upland area development, microfinance programme was incorporated for rural poverty alleviation. The Ukhrul Community Resource Management Society (URMS) took up activity on formation of SHGs and 654 SHGs were set up in 103 villages. Required microcredit linkage was made with UBI, Ukhrul bank and NIM. To examine the impact of microfinance programme under IFAD sponsored project an empirical study has been carried out. 200 sample units (SHG- Members) have been selected through multistage stratified random sampling method. Poverty Eradication Index (PEI) is employed for measurement of extent of poverty eradication. Employment generation and income generation are taken as causal factors. Consumption pattern, knowledge & skill level, and health care are taken as impact factors. The value of PEI indicates that 47.61% of the SHG members have crossed poverty line during last two decades and 48.5%of them are enabled to construct their own houses.

================================================================= Language in India www.languageinindia.com ISSN 1930-2940 Vol. 16:6 June 2016 ================================================================= Livelihood Practices and Environmental Changes With Special Reference to Ukhrul District of Manipur Console Zamreinao Shimrei, M.Phil., NET., Ph.D. Research Scholar ================================================================= Abstract The Tangkhul Naga was head-hunters, food gatherers, herdsmen for their livelihood in the very beginning of their settlement. Fruits and forest products were the main sources for their livelihood before transition from food gatherer to agriculturist. Shifting cultivation was the first and foremost agricultural practices by the Tangkhul Naga before the introduction of terraced cultivation. They practiced primitive agriculture. Shifting cultivation is integrally associated with cutting and burning down of forests and trees. It had profoundly embedded in their lifestyle. They practiced it for their livelihood. Shifting cultivation was a way of life for them. Therefore, their needs, food habits, folklores, festival and overall cultural ethos were connected to shifting cultivation. Shifting cultivation had considered destructive to the ecolo- gy and economically unviable and ecologically unsustainable. It was a major cause of forest loss in the hill tracts where it is practiced. Climate change is considered one the most unwanted threats to the environment, with negative impacts on human health, food security, economic activity, water and other natural resources and physical infrastructure. The meaning of ‘environment change’ had changed many times during the past century. Global Environmental Change or Global Change as used today includes not only climate change but also changes of other biophysical and anthropo- genic systems. Environmental changes taking place in the realm of global climate change, alteration of natural surroundings, loss of biodiversity and water pollution.
