Larry Green (1992-94)

Larry was a three-sport letter winner at Darlington High School, who excelled in wrestling. He earned back-to-back conference wrestling titles his junior and senior seasons. At the Wisconsin state championship, he placed third his junior year and claimed the state title at 171 lbs. in his senior season. During that 1990-91 season, he earned several team honors as well, being named team captain, team MVP and earning the Mr. Dedication award.

In the fall of 1991, Larry enrolled at MATC displaying the same dedication and talent he showed at Darlington High School. In his first season at MATC, Green posted a team best 8-3 record competing at the 167-177 weight classes. Larry also led the team in total takedowns and was second on the team in total points despite only wrestling in eleven matches.

In his second year at MATC, the team captain excelled as he won three tournaments and was named most outstanding wrestler in two of them. Wrestling at 167 pounds, Larry led the team in takedowns and recorded 112 team points while posting an impressive, team best, 27-6 record. Larry was one of three wrestlers who qualified for the national championship that season. At the national championship, Larry helped his team to a school record eleventh place national finish.

Larry’s hard work and determination on the mat also transferred over to the classroom as he was named academic all-state in his second year at MATC. In the spring of 1994, Larry graduated from MATC with a degree in Small Business Operations.

With a business background and a love of sports, he currently works for RBS Activewear, as the school sales manager who outfits youth, high school and collegiate sports teams. His enthusiasm and drive to teach younger athletes the importance of hard work and dedication led him into coaching. Larry currently serves as the defensive coordinator for the Pecatonica-Argyle football team and is also a junior high wrestling coach at the school. This past season, he was named district assistant football coach-of-the-year by the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association for the second time during his tenure. In addition to his high school coaching, he also continues to volunteer coach for the Blanchardville Park and Recreation Department.

“As a coach and a teacher you hope to have a whole team or class of Larry Green’s”, said former MATC Wrestling coach and Physical Education instructor, Denny Hoeser.

Larry currently lives in Blanchardville with his wife Teri, who he met through the MATC Athletic Department. They have three children, Tiffani, Logan and Tessa.

Chris Kilen Baseball (1993-95)

Chris was born in Portsmouth, Virgina and moved to Janesville when he was young. He attended Janesville Parker High School and was a talented two-year letterwinner in baseball. In a steller high school senior season, the lefthander recorded the second most wins in school history and became the school’s all- time career strikeout leader. Chris was named team MVP and earned first team all-state honors as he posted six shutouts and pitched a perfect game. With a tremendous high school career behind him, he was drafted by the Twins.

With high expectations, he enrolled at MATC to play baseball in the fall of 1993. In his first season at MATC, he not only met those expectations, he exceeded them. The lefthander had a school record eleven wins as he recorded 85 strikeouts in 74 innings pitched. Chris crafted an impressive 1.34 ERA to go with his undefeated 11-0 record. In the field, he made an impact as well, hitting .328 and leading the team in hits and runs scored. Chris was named all-conference, all-state and all-region for his outstanding play. His efforts led MATC Baseball to their first ever NJCAA Region XIII title and their first trip to the NJCAA Division III World Series. The team placed third in the nation and Kilen was voted team MVP.

In his sophomore season, the pre-season all-American started strong but arm problems cut short his season. He finished with a 2-0 record and a 1.38 ERA. The team went on to win a record 41 games and claimed the schools first ever national championship. Chris received the Doug Redsten Memorial Award that season for his outstanding leadership.

“If I had to choose one player who was the catalyst for MATC Baseball’s rise to national prominence, Chris Kilen would be that player,” commented former head baseball coach, Leo Kalinowski. “His mentality and attitude guided the program to the next level.”

Chris finished his career as the winningest pitcher in school history with a flawless 13-0 record, a staggering 1.35 ERA and an incredible 102 total strikeouts. His achievements still rank him among the top five in five season and career statistical categories.

In December of 1995, Chris graduated from MATC with an associate’s degree. He signed with NCAA Division I Northeast Louisiana State becoming the first MATC student-athlete in any sport to sign with a Division I University. At Northeast Louisiana State, he played alongside current Milwaukee Brewers ace, Ben Sheets. As a first year pitcher, Chris started the season with a 4-0 record until he suffered a career ending elbow injury. With baseball behind him, he earned his bachelors degree in Health & Human Performance in the spring of 1998.

In the fall of 2005, Chris took over as the Athletic Director at Waukesha County Technical College. He currently lives in Milton with his wife Kristina and their son Gavin.

Denise (Brattlie) Stenklyft Women’s Basketball & Volleyball (1994-96), Women’s Volleyball Coach (1999, 2001-02), Women’s Basketball Coach (2001-03)

Denise grew up in Cambridge and was a standout two-sport athlete for Cambridge High School. She was a three-time first team all-conference selection in both basketball and volleyball. In the fall of 1994, Denise started at MATC and played on the volleyball team. In her first season, she led the team in kills and was second in both blocks and digs. For her play she received numerous awards including team MVP, all-state and all-region honors while helping her team to a 16-game regular season win streak.

After a successful fall volleyball season, Denise made the transition to basketball with the persuasion of head basketball coach, Kris Quinlan. The 5’10” forward made an immediate impact as she averaged more than 16 points per game, pouring in 36 points in a state semifinal win. Her play helped the team to a 19-8 overall record and a second consecutive conference title. Denise received most valuable player honors and the defensive player award that season.

In her second year at MATC, she picked up where she left off. Denise once again led the volleyball team in kills and posted the team’s highest serving percentage. She also placed second in three other statistical categories, leading her volleyball coach to remark, “Denise is the most talented all-around player we have.” This all-around player and team captain was selected all-conference, all-region and team MVP for the second straight season as she contributed to the volleyball team’s first state title in five seasons.

With a successful volleyball career behind her, Denise started the 1995-96 basketball season focused and ready to help her team win. And that she did… Denise led the team in scoring for a second straight season as she averaged 21.2 points per game as her team tore through the regular season, gaining national attention. The team went 24-4 winning conference and state titles. Denise’s 573 points placed her second on the MATC all-time season scoring list and she contributed in other areas as well, as she was second on the team in rebounding and steals. Due to her outstanding season, Denise earned all- conference player-of-the-year, all-state, all-region and second team All-American honors. She became the first basketball player, men’s or women’s, in MATC history to earn All-American honors. At the time, she was also only the second female athlete in school history to receive all-american honors.

“Denise did everything she was asked and more for our basketball team,” said Kris Mills, her former basketball coach and current co-worker in the Fitness Center. “She has always been a great leader, caring person and was an absolute joy to coach… and now is a joy to work with everyday.”

In 1997, Denise graduated with an Administrative Assistant degree; however she was not done making her mark on MATC Athletics. She served two years as a women’s basketball assistant and assistant volleyball coach before taking over as head coach of the women’s basketball team part way through the 2001- 2002 season. In her first full season as head women’s basketball coach, with her brother Dan as an assistant coach, she guided the MATC women to their first region title in school history. Her team advanced to nationals and finished second, the highest national finish in school history. Her 24-6 team received the national sportsmanship award while she received all-region coach-of-the-year and Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association coach-of-the-year honors.

Denise currently works full-time in the MATC Fitness Center as a Fitness Center Assistant. She and her husband, Ben and daughter, Taylor, live in Cambridge and are expecting their second child in September. 89 REDSTEN AWARD

RE D STEN SERVICE AWAR D

Jeff Rice Doug Redsten Memorial Service Award

Similar to the late Doug Redsten, this individual has always been a strong supporter of MATC Athletics and their student-athletes and coaches. Since enrolling at MATC in the fall of 1989, his love for the school and the student-athletes that represent it are on display anytime you talk to him or listen to him at a home MATC basketball game. Every time he steps up to the microphone with script in hand (always with script in hand) he does his job with a passion. Since he started announcing basketball games back in the early 90’s, he has enhanced the experience for parents, coaches, student-athletes and fans.

Jeff, or “Ricer” as he is called, has been the voice of MATC Athletics for the past decade. Countless parents, coaches, student-athletes and fans throughout the years have appreciated the enthusiasm he brings to his job. From the starting lineups where you can hear his booming voice say “and in the middle”… to halftime where his outgoing personality allows him to talk to anyone, including young children asking him for a piece of gum… to after the game, where he is ready to lend-a-hand picking up. His willingness to help and his sociable personality is always on display. This season at the NJCAA Region XIII Men’s Basketball Tournament hosted by MATC, Rochester Community and Technical College had an autistic manager named Robbie. Robbie wanted to throw the ball to the referee to start the game so Ricer made arrangements to make this happen. This simple gesture not only made Robbie’s day but his parents, watching from the stands, as well. Robbie’s parents wrote a heartfelt letter to our president, Dr. Bettsey Barhorst, explaining the wonderful gesture and complimenting him for his compas- sion.”

When he is not introducing the starting lineups or calling the game, Ricer works as a special education teacher in the Madison Metropolitan School District and also helps announce sporting events at his alma mater, McFarland High School.

“Jeff has been a part of the MATC Athletic family for over a decade,” said Athletic Director Steve Hauser. “As an announcer he helps provide a great environment for our student-athletes, coaches and fans. As a person he shows a care, concern and enthusiasm that is contagious.”

Those who work with him at the scorers table can always count on Ricer to have something creative or witty to say. This carefree attitude is what makes him who he is… and that is, hopefully, the voice of the WolfPack for decades to come.

After reaching the NJCAA Division II World Series last season for the first time in school history and placing eighth in the country, there were high hopes abound for this year’s team. The 2006 team, comprised of 11 returning players, experienced great success over the regular season as the program captured its fifteenth straight conference title and won sixteen straight games during the month of April. In post-season play, MATC battled its way to the championship game of the NJCAA Region XIII tournament by winning four straight tournament games before falling to Miles Community College in the title game to finish the season second in the region. The WolfPack started the season by going 4-10-2 against tremendous competition in Arizona and Illinois, but were virtually unstoppable when they returned home, winning 23 of the next 26 games from April 1 - April 25.

MATC Baseball claimed their fifteenth consecutive conference title by going 11-1 in Wisconsin Technical College Conference play and outscoring their opponents, 108 to 24. MATC has been so dominant in conference play that their April 8th loss at Milwaukee Area Technical College was the program’s first in nearly six years, dating back to the 2000 season. Among many regular season highlights, MATC pitching combined to one-hit Rock Valley College through two games at Robin Roberts Field on April 20th. Stephen Gilgenbach threw a no-hitter in game two of the doubleheader, and before that, Brett Scarpetta held the Golden Eagles hitless until a fifth inning single ended his no-hit bid. Three days later, MATC’s offense exploded for 22 runs in a convincing win over Ashford University JV. Michael Kuhn recorded four hits and four RBIs, Paul Lennart and Matthew Lenski drove in three runs apiece in the rout. Additional regular season highlights came on back-to- back wins on April 5th and 6th when Johann Andes posted 5 RBIs in both games, and the WolfPack’s 2-0 victory over then-ranked No. 8 Elgin Community College on May 4th. MATC then closed out the regular season with an impressive 11-1 win over NJCAA Division I opponent Kishwaukee College. After finishing the regular season with a 31-21-2 record, MATC opened the NJCAA Region XIII Tournament in Bismarck, ND, with a 7-8 loss to Williston State College. The WolfPack then won their next three games, but faced a tall task in having to defeat Miles Community College twice in a row on the final day of the tournament to clinch a spot in the NJCAA District Title Series. The WolfPack gave themselves a chance to do just that by topping the Pioneers, 3-1, behind a brilliant complete-game performance from Brett Scarpetta in which he struck out nine and allowed only three hits. The win forced a championship game between the two teams directly thereafter. In the deciding game, their sixth game of the tournament, MATC could not get anything going offensively in a 1-7 loss, as the Pioneers sent the WolfPack home early for the third time in the last four years. Stephen Gilgenbach, Ben Long and Blaine Rutledge were each named to the all-region tournament team for their efforts. Gilgenbach struck out nine batters over six innings pitched in MATC’s win over Williston State College on day two of the tournament, while Long collected six hits, eight RBIs and scored five runs during the tournament. Blaine Rutledge, who led the WolfPack in numerous offensive categories throughout the season, went 12-for-23 over five tournament games with eight runs scored and a team-high nine RBIs.

MATC finished the season with an impressive overall record of 35-23-2. Blaine Rutledge was named all-district and became the thirteenth MATC baseball player to be named NJCAA Division II All-American (second team), and the third in the last three years. Rutledge now ranks in the top-10 in 13 different stat categories. 1011 BASEBALL

SEASON REVIEW 23 straight a record?? The 2005-06 season was a magical one for the Women’s Basketball team. Returning six players from last year’s team that placed fourth at nationals, the WolfPack went 16-1 to start the season and attained the nation’s No. 2 ranking in NJCAA polls. From there, MATC continued to dominate the opposition at home and on the road, cruising to state, conference and region titles and winning a school-record 23 straight games - all the while maintaining their No. 2 ranking. The WolfPack Women advanced to the national tournament for the second consecutive year and for the third time in the last four years, where they capped a memorable season with a third-place finish.

MATC went undefeated in Wisconsin Technical College Conference play (4-0) for the fourth straight year and captured the program’s fourth straight conference title. SEASON REVIEW The 2005-06 Men’s Basketball team showed continued improvement throughout the season, and experienced great success along the way. The team, with eight second year players in all and five from last year’s team, claimed the program’s first WJCAA State Title since the 1999 season, and finished second in the highly contested Wisconsin Technical College Conference.

A signal of things to come, he scored a team- high 17 points to go along with three assists and two steals in just 24 minutes logged. Armelin quickly assumed starting duties and was named first team all-conference as he lead the team in scoring 16 out of 20 games he played in. Joining him, sharpshooting guard Justin Hustad was named second team all-conference.

MATC persevered through losses against tough competition in Illinois and Arizona early in the season to finish the regular season with a 16-13 record.
