VASSAR COLLEGE The 2021/22 First-Year Handbook A HANDBOOK FOR THE CLASS OF 2025 1 To the Class of 2025 In a few short weeks, you will join a college community of other students, faculty, and administrators eager to welcome you to Vassar. The COVID-19 pandemic challenged our nation, community, and our College over the course of the last year. After managing to create a successful college experience during the COVID-19 pandemic, we look forward to returning to some sense for normalcy during the Fall 2021 semester. The large-scale availability of vaccines will inch us closer to this goal even as we will continue to be mindful of important protocols and safety measures to keep our community safe. Planning for your academic and co-curricular success at Vassar in the midst of this is also important to us. No doubt, you have already begun reflecting on your own intellectual and personal goals for the next four years at Vassar. To be prepared to meet them, you will need to think through, plan, and carry out an academic program grounded in the broad tradition of liberal education. The Dean of the College division is committed to helping you prepare and support you in meeting all of your goals. The materials in this book will help you make good use of the time between now and when you arrive on campus in August. As you read and work through them, I encourage you to be in touch with any relevant offices to ask any questions or to ask for additional support. You will also find instructions for pre-registering for your fall semester courses. Please read and consider this material carefully. We encourage you to think about it while pre-registering for classes and preparing the Statement of Academic Interests, which the dean of first-year students has requested you send before you arrive on campus. Your understanding of the materials here, the Vassar College catalogue, and your Statement of Academic Interests will provide the basis for the critical discussions that you will have with your faculty pre-major advisor, your house fellow, and the dean of first-year students when you arrive on campus in August. We look forward to welcoming you to campus and to facilitating your smooth and enjoyable transition into the Vassar community. Please be on the lookout for additional guidance and recommendations from the College in the coming weeks on how to best pack and prepare for your arrival on campus in August. I look forward to meeting each of you during your time at the College as we forge ahead in confronting the challenges of our contemporary moment together in the creation of a collective and beloved community. Wolf (eds) Maria Mitchell's Legacy to Vassar College: Then and Now Flora Grabowska Vassar College Libraries, Poughkeepsie, NY 12604, USA fl[email protected] Abstract. Maria Mitchell became Vassar's first Astronomy Professor and Observatory Director in 1865. Her teaching emphasis on students learning by direct observation and analysis is continued today at Vassar College. Several of her students went on to prominence in astronomy, two of them succeeding her at Vassar. Astronomy majors today, both male and female, consistently achieve success after Vassar, in astronomy as well as in other fields. She encouraged her students to present their findings at scientific meetings and in scientific journals, also encouraged today as undergraduates co-author research papers with faculty members. She insisted on excellent facilities and built up the library collection, maintained today to a standard remarkable for a college of just under 2,500 undergraduate students. 1. Great Beginnings Matthew Vassar was keen to have female teachers at Vassar College (Haight 1916). Maria Mitchell had achieved world fame with her 1847 telescopic discov- ery of a comet and was an excellent choice, becoming Vassar's first astronomy professor in 1865. In a eulogy at her funeral in 1889, Vassar College President Taylor concluded, \She has been an impressive figure in our time, and one whose influence lives." (Taylor 1889) Henry Albers, Vassar's fifth Observatory director (the first male!), referring to our fine facilities today, wrote, \In keeping with the legacy of Maria Mitchell, these facilities enable today's students to learn and apply the most modern astronomical techniques." (Albers 2001, 329) This presentation aims to confirm that the legacy has been self-perpetuating and lives on.

ABSTRACT This thesis will analyse Edmund Spenser's pastoral poems, The Shepherd's Calendar (1579) and Co/in Clout's Come Home Againe (1595) to uncover allegorical representations of Queen Elizabeth I. The psychoanalytical theories of Jacques Lacan and Julia Kristeva will be appropriated to construct a methodological model termed the 'Lacanian Pastoral'. This model will be used to examine Spenser's poetic unconscious that maps identity, represented by Spenser's poetic persona of Cohn Clout, on to a political landscape. Clout is constructed from Spenser's marginalised position outside the Elizabethan court, as a young poet in The Shepherd's Calendar and literary exile in Ireland in Co/in Clout's Come Home Againe. This creates a dichotomy between Spenser and Elizabeth, which is caused by Spenser's twin anxieties over Elizabeth's unmarried and childless state. These anxieties reflect Spenser's desire for patronage, and his fear of a counter-reformation threat posed by Catholicism. They create a poetic identity in which Elizabeth is unconsciously desired as the exotic Other, through a pastoral that maps the Elizabethan court. Spenser constructs this political landscape from a reinterpretation of his Virgihian and Petrarchan pastoral influences. Both these classical poets use allegory to create political tension in their pastorals that, as this thesis will argue, Spenser exacerbates to construct a dystopic pastoral. The dystopic pastoral reflects Spenser's inner turmoil surrounding his own future, and that of Protestantism in England.
