Queens of Consciousness & Sex-Radicalism in Hip-Hop
Queens of Consciousness & Sex-Radicalism in Hip-Hop: On Erykah Badu & The Notorious K.I.M. by Greg Thomas, Ph.D. English Department Syracuse University Greg Thomas ([email protected]) is an Assistant Professor in the English Department at Syracuse University. His interests include Pan-Africanism, Hip-Hop and Black radical traditions. He is author of The Sexual Demon of Colonial Power: Pan-African Embodiment and Erotic Schemes of Empire (Indiana University Press, 2007). He is also editor of the e-journal, Proud Flesh: New Afrikan Journal of Culture, Politics & Consciousness. Abstract This article is a study of sex, politics and lyrical literature across what could be called “Hip-Hop & Hip-Hop Soul.” It champions the concept “sexual consciousness” against popular and academic assumptions that construe “sexuality” and “consciousness” to be antithetical--in the tradition of “the mind/body split” of the white bourgeois West. An alternative, radical articulation of consciousness with an alternative, radical politics of gender and sexuality is located in the musical writings of two contemporary “iconic” figures: Lil’ Kim of “Hip-Hop” and Erykah Badu of “Neo-Soul.” Underscoring continuities between these author-figures, one of whom is coded as an icon of “sexuality (without consciousness),” conventionally, and the other as an icon of “consciousness (without sexuality),” I show how Black popular music is a space where radical sexual identities and epistemic politics are innovated out of vibrant African/Diasporic traditions. 23 The Journal of Pan African Studies, vol. 1, no. 7, March 2007 The reputed “Father of African Cinema,” Ousmane Sembène is perhaps ironically famous for what we can call his sexual consciousness, a consciousness of the politics of sex or gender and sexuality, in his radical productions of Black independent film. -
Bradley Syllabus for South
Special Topics in African American Literature: OutKast and the Rise of the Hip Hop South Regina N. Bradley, Ph.D. Course Description In 1995, Atlanta, GA, duo OutKast attended the Source Hip Hop Awards, where they won the award for best new duo. Mostly attended by bicoastal rappers and hip hop enthusiasts, OutKast was booed off the stage. OutKast member Andre Benjamin, clearly frustrated, emphatically declared what is now known as the rallying cry for young black southerners: “the South got something to say.” For this course, we will use OutKast’s body of work as a case study questioning how we recognize race and identity in the American South after the civil rights movement. Using a variety of post–civil rights era texts including film, fiction, criticism, and music, students will interrogate OutKast’s music as the foundation of what the instructor theorizes as “the hip hop South,” the southern black social-cultural landscape in place over the last twenty-five years. Course Objectives 1. To develop and utilize a multidisciplinary critical framework to successfully engage with conversations revolving around contemporary identity politics and (southern) popular culture 2. To challenge students to engage with unfamiliar texts, cultural expressions, and language in order to learn how to be socially and culturally sensitive and aware of modes of expression outside of their own experiences. 3. To develop research and writing skills to create and/or improve one’s scholarly voice and others via the following assignments: • Critical listening journal • Nerdy hip hop review **Explicit Content Statement** (courtesy: Dr. Treva B. Lindsey) Over the course of the semester students will be introduced to texts that may be explicit in nature (i.e., cursing, sexual content). -

Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres by Vivian Le A THESIS submitted to Oregon State University Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems (Honors Scholar) Presented May 29, 2020 Commencement June 2020 AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Vivian Le for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems presented on May 29, 2020. Title: Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres. Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Ryann Reynolds-McIlnay The rise of digital streaming has largely impacted the way the average listener consumes music. Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time. -

PROLOGUE Sidelines of chairs neatly divide the center field and a large stage stands erect. At its center, there is a stately podium flanked by disciplined men wearing the militaristic suits of the Fruit of Islam, a visible security squad. This is Ford Field, usually known for housing the Detroit Lions football team, but on this occasion it plays host to a different gathering and sentiment. The seats are mostly full, both on the floor and in the stands, but if you look closely, you’ll find that this audience isn’t the standard sporting fare: the men are in smart suits, the women dress equally so, in long white dresses, gloves, and headscarves. -

Talented artists representing a vast array of religious groups in America express their religion through popular music styles. Christian Rock, Jewish Reggae and Muslim Hip-Hop are not anomalies; rather they are indicative of a larger subculture of radio-ready religious music. This pop music has a purpose but it is not a singular purpose. This music might enhance the worship experience, provide a wholesome alternative to the unsavory choices provided by secular artists, infiltrate the mainstream culture with a positive message, raise the level of musicianship in the religious subculture or appeal to a religious audience despite origins in the secular world. -

Hip-Hop Artists Ali Big Gipp Drop 'Kinfolk' 8-15
Hip-Hop Artists Ali Big Gipp Drop 'Kinfolk' 8-15 Written by Robert ID2755 Wednesday, 21 June 2006 00:11 - Rap artist Ali, of the platinum selling hip-hop group St. Lunatics, and "Dirty South" hip-hop impresario Goodie Mob alum rap artist Big Gipp will be releasing their hip-hop collaborative debut album, Kinfolk, August 15th. Kinfolk comes following up their appearance on the #1 hit track ‘Grillz’ with fellow hip-hop artist Nelly and will be on his record label, Derrty Ent., an imprint of Universal Motown Records. The first single off the album, “Go ‘Head,” is an anthemic summer song that combines "midwest swing" with southern crunk and is produced by up and coming St. Louis native Trife. "Gipp and I started hanging out a while back and found that we had a lot in common," says Ali. "We''re both considered leaders in our crews, we''re fathers and even though we have different styles, we respect each other's skills." Gipp describes their collaborative effort as “the best of both worlds-- the St. Lunatics kicked off the midwest movement and Goodie Mob helped establish southern rap, that’s why I say it’s the best of both worlds; Plain and simple." In that spirit, Kinfolk has a mix of songs featuring "St. Louis" hip-hop kin: rap artists Nelly, Murphy Lee and Derrty Ent newcomers, Chocolate Tai and Avery Storm; "Atlanta" hip-hop kin Cee-lo and other southern hip-hop all-stars include rappers Juvenile, David Banner, Three 6 Mafia and Bun B. The album collab also contains a mix of mid-west and southern producers including the St. -

Once Upon a Time in NFT: Blockchain, Copyright and the Right of First Sale Doctrine
Once Upon a Time in NFT: Blockchain, Copyright and the Right of First Sale Doctrine Katya Fisher, Esq. March 2019 In 2014 the legendary hip hop group Wu-Tang Clan announced that it had recorded Once Upon a Time in Shaolin, a double album produced in secret over the course of six years. The album was limited to a single physical copy, stored in a secured vault, and auctioned through auction house Paddle8 for a winning bid of $2,000,000 in 2015. The purchase included contractual terms stating that the album could not be commercially exploited by the subsequent owner until the year 2103. The concept behind the creation was explained by Wu-Tang Clan as follows: “History demonstrates that great musicians such as Bach, Beethoven and Mozart were held in profoundly high esteem. They were considered sublime artists and masters of exploring emotion. Their work forged windows into the most elusive elements of the human experience. And yet in our time, music is no longer perceived in the same way. “Perhaps it is our cultural attitudes to modern music that have cast it as something to be consumed. The complacency of no holds barred access and the saturation wrought by technology’s erosion of challenges. Mass replication has fundamentally changed the way we view a piece of recorded music, while digital universality and vanishing physicality have broken our emotional bond with a piece of music as an artwork and a deeply personal treasure. “By adopting an approach to music that traces its lineage back through The Enlightenment, the Baroque and the Renaissance, we hope to reawaken age old perceptions of music as truly monumental art. -
