Extended version: Oei Tjoe Tat was born in Solo (Java), Indonesia (the former Dutch East Indies), April 26, 1922 in a Chinese Indonesian middle class family. He played an important role in the Indonesian political developments and became a confidant of president Sukarno . He was Minister of State during the events of 1965. He was characterized as a personality of integrity and strong idealism. During his studies he met his future wife Kwee Loan Nio (Rieka), whom he married at the end of the Japanese occupation. He graduated in law at the Universiteit van Indonesië in Batavia (Jakarta) in May 1948. In the same year he joined a Batavia law firm. Furthermore he was active in a number of Chinese and Indonesian organizations like the Indonesian Red Cross, the Tiong Hoa Hwee Koan (THHK) in Jakarta, and the Union Makes Strong (UMS), a soccer association in Jakarta. From 1950-1953 he was president of Sing Ming Hui in Jakarta, and in 1953 he became vice- president of the Partai Demokrat Tionghoa Indonesia (PDTI). In 1954 he was one of the advocates for dissolving the PDTI and establishing Baperki (Badan Permusyawaratan Kewarganegaraan Indonesia), with the main purpose of integrating the Indonesian Chinese people in the Indonesian society. For Baperki he also became member of the Konstituante, who had the task to design a new constitution for the Republic of Indonesia. Through these activities he came into contact with people of various political parties. In 1960 he joined the Partindo (Partai Indonesia) a political group which broke away from the Indonesian Nationalist Party in the late 1950s, and became member of its executive committee. From 1963-1966 he was attached to the Cabinet Presidium by President Sukarno as Minister of State. Detained by the authorities after the 1965 failed coup he spent more than ten years in prison without charge or trial. March 1976, however, he was tried on false accusations, but was eventually released in December 1977 after the intervention of Foreign Minister Adam Malik. He reopened his law firm, but had to close it down in 1985 after having a stroke. In 1995 he published his memoirs entitled Memoar Oei Tjoe Tat : Pembantu President Sukarno [The memoirs of Oei Tjoe Tat: President Sukarno's assistant] with the help of friends, among them as senior editor the famous Indonesian novilist, Pramoedya Ananta Toer. After publication in Jakarta the memoirs were forbidden by the Suharto regime. Oei Tjoe Tat died in 1996 in Jakarta at the age of 74.
