The WAFC would encourage all clubs and leagues to utilise the resources around this program and proactively address areas of concern that they have around sideline behaviour. Play by the Rules provides information, resources, tools and free online training to increase the capacity and capability of administrators, coaches, officials, players, parents and spectators to assist them in preventing and dealing with discrimination, harassment, child safety, inclusion and integrity issues in sport. Further information can be accessed at https://www.playbytherules.net.au/ The number one reason why kids play sport is to have fun with their friends, and it is imperative that all adults understand that this is their primary motivator to participate. Adults need to take a step back and ensure that we are creating the best possible environment for our kids to ensure that they engage in lifelong physical activity, as opposed to walking away from the game due to the behaviour of adults, or even worse their own parents. This manual will serve to provide all junior teams, clubs, leagues and administrators a clear set of by-laws, rules and policies that are consistently applied across all junior football environments. You will also note that in season 2017 we have also included a Junior Football Philosophy section to the by-laws that will help direct the way that junior football is played across WA A sincere thank you to all the volunteers at clubs and leagues who without their time and effort Junior Football would simply not run. Your tireless work does not go unnoticed so thank you! 2017 will again be a big year for Junior Football and I wish you all the best for the season. This season will signal the final year of AFL being played with clubs, leagues, DFDCs and the junior football stakeholders at Domain Stadium prior to its move to the new Perth Stadium to provide the latest detail and to answer any questions/queries at Burswood. The support of a globally recognised firm such as BCG has been invaluable and provided some impressive intellect, capability and international experience to the project.     MEDIA RELEASE - AFL (NSW/ACT) Wednesday, April 2 Henson Park to host five Sydney AFL matches this Saturday With the celebrations for 150 years of Australian Football underway, Sydney AFL will be creating some history of its own this weekend, with an entire round of senior football scheduled over one day at Henson Park for the season opener. This Saturday, footy fans will be treated to over 12 hours of Australian Football action, with all five Round One matches of the Sydney AFL taking place at the newly renovated facility. Henson Park, home of the Newtown Jets, has recently undergone a $250,000 upgrade, and this will be the first opportunity for Sydney AFL to take centre stage at the refurbished ground. Garry Burkinshaw, Senior Football Operations Coordinator for AFL (NSW/ACT) said that this was an exciting milestone for the Sydney AFL competition and signaled the leagues continued development as a premier sporting competition. “This is an important year for Australian Football across all levels of competition and Sydney AFL is no exception. As a competition the standard and support is growing rapidly and being able to provide fans with an entire day and night of Australian Football is a fantastic opportunity. “It is also the perfect platform to showcase some of the emerging talent coming through. Fans will be able to see the next generation of AFL stars in action with many of the NSW Rams players taking part in matches, along with some of the AFL Scholarship holders,” said Burkinshaw. The Sydney AFL competition has developed some true champions over the years with no less than 13 players currently on AFL lists.

    NEW SOUTH WALES AUSTRALIAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE 110th ANNUAL REPORT SEASON 1998 THE CHIEf COMMISSIONER II -.-present my 1998 Annual report with a touch of sadness but also with great .-1/1_ excitement over what the future holds for Australian Football in this State. As foreshadowed in my report 12 months ago, the A FL Task Force has now completed its investigations and the AFL has made a firm commitment in both financial and human resource terms to the development of the code in NSW and the ACT. Today 1 appeal to you, the members of the NSWAFL, to endorse the recommendation before you which will pave the way for the new look AFL (NSW­ ACT Commission) to commence the enormous task which lays ahead. In this my final report as Chairman of the NSWAFL I would like to take the opportunity to thank those people who have served the League well over many years. Chief Commissioner Special thanks are due to long serving Commissioners Col Koh/hagen and Reg Turner. JOHN YATES While neither of these gentlemen will take up a position on the new Board, I know that each of them will make a significant contribution to football in this State either directly or in an advisory capacity in the future. Congratulations to my other fellow Commissioners John Livy and Ross Howarth who have been appointed to the new Board by the AFL. As all ofyou are aware, John has taken 011 the demanding role of Chief Executive of the new organisation. Football in this State owes a great deal to our Chief Executive Officer Craig Davis and his administrative staff Peter Hiscock and Kris Honan.

The emphasis at this age level is the development of basic game skills (kicking, handballing, marking, gathering, evasion and checking) and learning technical and tactical concepts. At these ages it’s not about best players, leading goal kickers or winning/losing, instead it’s all about enjoying football, playing with your friends and most of all having fun! Study your opponent carefully and think outside the box. Make sure you nail your captain and most importantly make sure you don’t play short. Good luck to everyone for Round 18. IS 35 THE NEW 30? 35 plus disposals in a game this season Season- In days gone by, if one of your midfielders topped the 30 disposal mark Round Club 35 + Avg. Disp. Avg. DT it was considered to be a great achievement, but with the way the game high is played today, if they fall below that, then some may consider that to Dane Swan COLL 7 39 32.1 124 be a failure. So I pose the question, is 35 the new 30? Remarkably he has achieved this in six of his past seven games, with the only other time being way back in Round 7 against Joel Selwood GEE 4 41 28.6 105 North Melbourne. He has averaged 139 points from these games and Adam Cooney WB 3 36 (x3) 27.4 98 is in career best form and as I’ve said in previous weeks, if he’s not currently in your side, then you better find a way to bring him in.

Regardless of how you’re faring after two rounds, this is the week to offload the underperformers and snap up those boom cash cows. If you’ve nailed your side and have all cash cows playing and performing well, then there’s no need to trade just for the sake of it. Conserve your trades and use them only when needed. Good luck to all coaches for the upcoming round, as it will be the last head-to-head round for three weeks. WHAT A START TO THE YEAR FOR SWAN If you took the captain’s arm band off Dane Swan last week, then you would have felt sick in the guts when he came out an racked up a lazy 18 disposals in the second term against the Kangaroos – the most ever recorded in a second quarter. If you were playing against him, you would have felt even worse. His start to the season has been remarkable, collecting 34 and 40 disposals from his first two games, scoring 137 and 162 points respectively. This gives you an average of 149 points per match and we have to go back to 1989 to find a more productive Dream Team start to the year. That year big Tony Lockett let loose, scoring nine goals and 153 points in Round 1 against the Brisbane Bears and he followed it up with another 10 goals and 160 points the following week against Carlton.

The rules of the game are continually evolving. Players too, have become more versatile with fitness and skill levels continually improving. Advances in the coaching area have seen an increased emphasis on tactics as coaches strive to gain an edge over their opposition. Before the start of a season, a coach should analyse the previous season, setting down the team’s strengths and areas for improvement and assessing all new players, as well as closely analysing the competition’s better teams before finalising a game plan. In considering the development of a game plan and tactics, it is useful to have a basic understanding of some of the concepts and terminology commonly used to describe areas of the playing field and roles of the players. ANATOMY OF TEAM PLAY Zones The ground is divided into three separate playing zones. DEFENCE MIDFIELD FORWARD The Corridor The Corridor is the area of the ground running from end to end, approximately the width of the centre square. It is the area within which most of the play occurs. It is of strategic advantage whether defending or attacking.
