For Ummi and Abbi: I love you both. ABSTRACT: This thesis uses the case study of the Arab-Islamic Fulla doll to examine the relationships among globalization, consumption and cultural identities. Beginning with the question of how cultural products like the Fulla doll come to exist, I argue that the Fulla doll serves as an example of the process of creolization whereby non-Western peoples mobilize local customs and beliefs to transform globally-distributted consumer goods, thus re-contextualizing and assigning new meanings to these goods. Through an analysis of thirteen animated Fulla doll advertisements, I argue that the Barbie doll’s ethnic, religious and gendered identity has been re-contextualized to transform her into an Arab-Muslim woman, the Fulla doll. -

On the contrary, it is claimed by many Islamic Jurist that the ADR processes like Negotiation, Mediation, Med-Arb, and Arbitration are practiced in Islam from 1400 years and are mentioned in holy Quran. The present paper is an attempt to analyze practice and concept of Alternative Dispute Resolution from an Islamic theological perspective. More specifically, I am interested in how sharia as a divine, non- contingent moral and legal code is understood and analyzed in various contingent situations and everyday settings such as producing, distributing, marketing and consuming halal food products. Drawing on conversations with residents, employees, and customers who visit stores in Devon Avenue, as well as archival research, my aim is to demonstrate the various multifaceted understandings and implications of sharia for Muslims in the United States. I argue that the multifaceted interpretations and practices of sharia in the United States are connected with the rhythms and everyday practices of Chicago and beyond. These connections, rhythms, and practices are reflected and interpreted in the actions and comments of Muslims and non-Muslims alike. The goal here is not just to show that the religious (for instance, sharia) and the non- religious/secular (grocery stores, restaurants, farms) are intertwined but to what extent these seemingly separate and disparate domains and spaces may be concurrently called upon within the framework of Islam, sharia, and halal food. -

It attempts to discuss the victimization of women characters in the hands of history and culture. Women and History Though the novels concerned are not historical in the strict sense of the word, the title of the thesis demands a parallel study of literary (the novels) and non-literary (the history of the country) texts. Both the novelists have drawn in abundance from the historical happenings of Afghanistan. The unstable political history of Afghanistan which had been marked by power struggles, armed revolts and mass uprisings had a direct bearing on the social fabric of this multi-ethnic country which is well mirrored in the novels. History of Afghanistan stands a testimony to the fact that the issues related to women have always been one of the various reasons for unstable polity. A cursory examination of history reveals that at various junctures in the history, the issues related to women have been among the reasons behind the fall of various regimes. Afghanistan is a country with deep patriarchal roots and a tribal-based family structure. In Afghanistan, family is at the heart of the society. -

Aseel Al-Ramahi S ulh: A Crucial Part of Islamic Arbitration 1 Sulh : A Crucial Part of Islamic Arbitration Aseel Al-Ramahi * Abstract: Arbitration and amicable settlement ( sulh ) have a long history within Arab and Islamic societies and have their roots in pre-Islamic Arabia. Sulh is the preferred result and process in any form of dispute resolution. Further, arbitration is favoured to adjudication in Islamic jurisprudence. In tribal and Islamic cultures, the overarching objective in conflict settlement is collectivity. Group solidarity is explored in this paper and its effect on dispute resolution is examined. The paper looks at the differences between East and West and shows that the Eastern party has an intrinsic community and a collective attitude to conflict whereas the Western party is individually minded and procedurally orientated, thus causing friction between the two sides. The distinctions between them relate to the perceptions of conflict, the formation of procedure and the status and function of the third party intervener. -

Elaheh Rostami-Povey, University of London ince September 11, 2001, Western powers have used the discourses of S capacity building, women’s empowerment, and the universality of de- mocracy to deny their imperial domination of Central Asia and the Middle East. Nation building from outside and above has excluded the majority of the population and has exacerbated ethnic, religious, class, and gender conflicts while undermining the prospect of a local democracy.1 The two books under review here make an important contribution to the literature on the impact of foreign intervention into socioeconomic and political developments in Afghanistan, particularly in relation to wom- en’s and gender issues. In Globalizing Afghanistan: Terrorism, War, and the Rhetoric of Nation Building, Zubeda Jalalzai and David Jefferess have assembled a range of articles that discuss how the ongoing conflict in Af- ghanistan requires an engagement with the framework of globalization. Chapters provide analyses of the ways terrorism, war, security, and the rhetoric of state and nation building provide insight into a globalized Af- ghanistan. This book also discusses the role of Afghanistan as a site of evolving articulations of transnationalism, particularly in a feminist frame. Hence, a number of contributors to this volume demonstrate the im- portance of including diverse Afghan women in the process of nation and state building to ensure attention to women’s rights issues. -

After they took power following the 1979 revolution, the religious elite has been using the Friday sermon to transmit the supreme leader’s messages to the people and officials at home and abroad. While studying Friday sermons, there are several issues that need to be addressed related to their philosophical developments, particularly their purpose, topic, content and administrational development including the relationship between Friday prayer leaders and politics. A question arises here: What is the relationship between Friday prayer leaders and political power? Do they represent the Hawza and its teachings or the ruling elite and its perspectives? The significance of this study stems from addressing the above- mentioned issues —through which we aim to highlight the role of the supreme leader in the Friday sermon and the appointment and dismissal of Friday prayer leaders. -

2 “Good Women Have No Need for This Law” The Battles over the Law on Elimination of Violence against Women On July 19, 2009, President Karzai signed two laws. One was a revised version of the Shia Personal Status Law, which had created an uproar both in Afghanistan and abroad for its conservative articles on gender relations.1 Despite having un- dergone a review triggered by the protests of women’s rights activists and inter- national donors, the Shia law, as it was usually called, still contained a number of articles that these groups considered problematic. This final version appeared to sanction underage marriage, made women’s right to marry dependent on their fathers’ or grandfathers’ permission, and constructed a marital relation in which wives were supposed to submit to sexual relations on demand—or risk forfeit- ing claims of maintenance from their husbands.2 The other law signed that day, however, was considered a triumph by many women’s rights activists. It was the Law on the Elimination of Violence against Women, (Qanon-e maneh khoshonat alie zan), normally referred to as the EVAW law in English. Four years had been spent drafting it. It was unprecedented in Afghan history, listing twenty-two acts as violence against women and mandating punishments for them. It also obliged the government to take specific actions to prevent violence and to support victims. The EVAW law was regarded as important because, unlike the existing Penal Code, it designated rape (tajavoz-e jinsi) as a crime distinct from consensual adul- tery, provided considerably stricter punishments for forced and underage mar- riage, and criminalized a number of violations of women’s civil rights, such as the deprivation of inheritance or preventing a woman from pursuing work or an education.
