It is with good reason that I am providing forward to the grand reopening! yet another update on this exciting project; construction on the long-awaited expansion is nearly complete, and reopening is coming this spring. During a recent sneak peek of the construction site by City staff, I was astonished to see how much of a difference this investment has made in the size, functionality, and welcoming atmosphere of our beloved arena. I was struck by the large, open lobby, the new community meeting room, the plethora of windows letting in so much more light and seeing the roughed-in area for the new dressing rooms. All of these changes will make our arena a welcoming and accessible space for all users. I wanted to pull back the curtain and let everyone see some of these amazing improvements. 8 • The BANAR April-May 2021 Community tribute to Doctor Denis Cyr Robin Farnand & Don Kelly We are writing these few words to pay tribute to Doctor Denis Cyr, M.Sc. DC, Blackburn Hamlet’s notable chiropractor who passed away suddenly in March of this year. Denis studied anatomical and biological sciences and had a Master of Science. Shortly after graduating, Dr. Cyr established his chiropractor practice in Blackburn Hamlet and has been serving our community for over 33 years. Doctor Cyr was committed to providing his patients with the best of care and was passionate about ensuring he did everything he could to improve their health. His work ethic, energy, and kind treatment approach was infectious, which was a major factor in the efficient and effective recovery of so many of his patients. Denis was a cherished colleague and friend, and he will be missed by many within our community. Spring into sunflowers! With summer right around the corner, a Blackburn resident would like to challenge the community to a Sunflower Growing Contest! So grab your seeds and gardening tools, and let’s see if we can make Blackburn Hamlet the “Sunn- flower-iest” neighborhood in Ottawa! Please note, this challenge is only for fun and bragging rights among you neighbors; there will be no official judging of sunflowers.

During the late 18th and 19th centuries, pedestrianism (i.e., competitive walking) was a popular sport in Britain and North America. For a number of years (1860-1880s) it was the biggest sport and drew huge crowds, betting and big prizes for winners. Walkers would cover large distances as fast as they could (e.g. 100 miles or across the United States), or compete against each other in an arena (e.g. six days straight). As it became more competitive, rules were created to define what was walking and what was not – and this led to what is modern-day racewalking. An athlete’s back toe cannot leave the ground until the heel of the front foot has touched and the supporting leg must straighten from the point of contact with the ground and remain straightened until the body passes directly over it. This is assessed by race judges. It’s a technical sport that requires cardio and technique to walk quickly. I have been a competitive runner for over 30 years and now have fallen in love with racewalking.
