  • Disney and His Worlds
DISNEY AND HIS WORLDS Disney and his Worlds is a thorough overview of what is by now quite a large literature on the Disney organization, in particular the theme parks and their significance for contemporary culture. The author looks at Walt Disney’s life and how his biography has been constructed; the Walt Disney Company in the years after his death; and the writings of various commentators on the Disney theme parks. He raises important issues about the parks: whether they are harbingers of postmodernism; the significance of consumption at the parks; the nature of the parks as tourism; and the representation of past and future. The discussion of theme parks is central but links with the presentation of Walt Disney’s biography and his organization by showing how central economic and business considerations have been in their development, and how the significance of these considerations is typically marginalized in order to place an emphasis on fantasy and magic. In the process, the book questions the assumption that the parks are sites of postmodern sensibility. Disney films, merchandizing and theme parks are one of the defining features of our times and one of the more effective elements in American cultural imperialism. It is impossible to imagine an encyclopedic sociology of contemporary culture that did not devote at least a chapter to Disney and his Worlds. In particular the parks are often employed as examples in areas like cultural studies, the sociology of postmodernism, tourism and leisure studies, while Walt Disney and his organization are important to the area of organization studies.

FUTURE WORLD(S): A Critique of Disney's EPCOT and Creating a Futuristic Curriculum by ALAN BOWERS (Under the Direction of Daniel Chapman) ABSTRACT In my dissertation inquiry, I explore the need for utopian based curriculum which was inspired by Walt Disney’s EPCOT Center. Theoretically building upon such works regarding utopian visons (Bregman, 2017, e.g., Claeys 2011;) and Disney studies (Garlen and Sandlin, 2016; Fjellman, 1992), this work combines historiography and speculative essays as its methodologies. In addition, this project explores how schools must do the hard work of working toward building a better future (Chomsky and Foucault, 1971). Through tracing the evolution of EPCOT as an idea for a community that would “always be in the state of becoming” to EPCOT Center as an inspirational theme park, this work contends that those ideas contain possibilities for how to interject utopian thought in schooling.

  • Land Liner Notes (Disc 1)
The Land Liner Notes 1. LISTEN TO THE LAND (ENTRANCE PLAZA) The fourth of seven incredibility innovative compositions created for EPCOT Center’s Entrance Plaza. ‘Listen to the Land’ is a near perfect combination of electronic accents and sweeping Aaron Copland style orchestral chords. It’s percussively upbeat rhythms are only surpassed by the uplifting strings of its medley. As the middle composition for the Entrance Plaza, it serves as a wonderfully impactful climax to EPCOT Center’s Overture. 2. PAVILION ATMOSPHERE An unusual hybrid of American Folk songs and electronically based arrangements. ‘The Pavilion Atmosphere’ conveys an image of agrarian harmony in a technological world that perfectly complements the futuristic green house for which it underscores. THE HARVEST THEATER 3. SYMBIOSIS, A CREATIVE PARTNERSHIP This 70mm film depicts the delicate balance between technological progress and environmental integrity. , ‘Symbiosis displays the resourcefulness of nearly 70 countries, the history of agriculture, and the challenges and triumphs of providing nourishment to an ever expanding population while balancing ecological concerns that effect the planet. THE GOOD TURN RESTAURANT 4. REVOLVING RESTAURANT With its Burgundy walls and chrome fixtures, the ‘Good Turn Restaurant’ is decidedly refined. Yet, for all its sophistication, the atmospheric music of this perpetually rotating café is presented in sharp contrast to surroundings. One of several variations of Bob Moline’s Listen to the Land, this traditional country version speaks to the agrarian theme of the pavilion during the Kraft years. LISTEN TO THE LAND 5. LISTEN TO THE LAND Bob Moline’s choral Folk style of The Land’s main theme music, this version begins our journey through “Tomorrow’s Harvest”.

A few forms of commercial recreation have been dealt with in this thesis, concentrating on the development of amusement parks, from the first pic- nic parks built by the traction companies and others in order to increase the use of their particular means of transportation through the develop- ment of traditional amusement parks which we see today on the edges of met- ropolitan areas struggling against the forces of rising property prices and declining business, to the advent of Disneyland and the beginning of a new era in the history of amusement parks - the theme parks.

One of the two days has you arrive prior to 9:00am, so you can visit the headlining Future World attractions and move through some of the less popular Future World attractions with short waits. The other day has you arrive later in the afternoon or early evening to visit as much of the World Showcase as you like and see IllumiNations. In many ways, it’s similar to the One-Day Standard Plan, only split up into two days. This type of touring plan works well in a variety of situations. You may want to use the evening portion of the plan on your arrival day, so you have an opportunity to settle in before heading off to a Park. You may want to use the morning portion on a Fantasmic day, so you can easily Park Hop over to Hollywood Studios at night after spending most of the day touring Epcot. You may also want to Park Hop over to Magic Kingdom for Main Street Electrical Parade and Wishes. You might find yourself spending half the day at Animal Kingdom, but want to head over to Epcot for dinner, IllumiNations, and some World Showcase shopping.

State of the Labs Sandia Ranks at the Very Top Ed. Note: President George Dacey re• cently shared with members of Public Affairs and Employee Communica• tions Department 3160 his views of San• dia's past, present, and future. This is a summary of that discussion. SLN: Let's begin with our relationship with DOE, especially in light of the recent report by ERAB (Energy Research Advis• ory Board), which studied the role of the national labs. GCD: The ERAB report is a very satis• factory report, I think, from our standpoint. It recognizes that the national laboratories differ among themselves - some are weapon laboratories, some are engineering laboratories, some are physics labora• tories, some operate facilities, and others have a single, precise mission. The report no longer attempts to give a single role statement that applies to all the labs. A second and most important perception from our standpoint was the recognition that the national labs, Sandia in particular, are national resources and therefore should be treated with the respect due any valu• able possession. You can dissipate such a resource very easily, but it takes many years, a generation or so, to build a labora• tory of quality. "Our stock with DOE has never been higher." A third perception, which is welcome at GEORGE DACEY, president of Sandia National Laboratories. least from our rather narrow point of view, is that the ERAB felt that the laboratories were well managed by local professionals in science and engineering but that there was too much of an attempt to "micromanage" from Washington.
