Cultural Imaginations of Piracy in Video Games
FORUM FOR INTER-AMERICAN RESEARCH (FIAR) VOL. 11.2 (SEP. 2018) 30-43 ISSN: 1867-1519 © forum for inter-american research “In a world without gold, we might have been heroes!” Cultural Imaginations of Piracy in Video Games EUGEN PFISTER (HOCHSCHULE DER KÜNSTE BERN) Abstract From its beginning, colonialism had to be legitimized in Western Europe through cultural and political narratives and imagery, for example in early modern travel reports and engravings. Images and tales of the exotic Caribbean, of beautiful but dangerous „natives“, of unbelievable fortunes and adventures inspired numerous generations of young men to leave for the „new worlds“ and those left behind to support the project. An interesting figure in this set of imaginations in North- Western Europe was the “pirate”: poems, plays, novels and illustrations of dashing young rogues, helping their nation to claim their rightful share of the „Seven Seas“ achieved major successes in France, Britain the Netherlands and beyond. These images – regardless of how far they might have been from their historical inspiration – were immensely successful and are still an integral and popular part of our narrative repertoire: from novels to movies to video games. It is important to note that the “story” was – from the 18th century onwards –almost always the same: a young (often aristocratic) man, unfairly convicted for a crime he didn’t commit became an hors-la-loi against his will but still adhered to his own strict code of conduct and honour. By rescuing a city/ colony/princess he redeemed himself and could be reintegrated into society. Here lies the morale of the story: these imaginations functioned also as acts of political communication, teaching “social discipline”. -

L3700 LETHAL WEAPON (USA, 1987) (Other titles: Arma lethale; Arme fatale; Dodbringende veben; Zwei stahlharte profis) Credits: director, Richard Donner ; writer, Shane Black. Cast: Mel Gibson, Danny Glover, Gary Busey. Summary: Police thriller set in contemporary Los Angeles. Martin Riggs (Gibson) is no ordinary cop. He is a Vietnam veteran whose killing expertise and suicidal recklessness make him a lethal weapon to anyone he works against or with. Roger Murtaugh (Glover), also a veteran, is an easy-going homicide detective with a loving family, a big house, and a pension he does not want to lose. The only thing Murtaugh and Riggs have in common is that they hate to work with partners, but their partnership becomes the key to survival when a routine murder investigation turns into an all-out war with an international heroin ring. Automatic Movie Analysis and Summarisation Philip John Gorinski I V N E R U S E I T H Y T O H F G E R D I N B U Doctor of Philosophy Institute for Language, Cognition and Computation School of Informatics University of Edinburgh 2017 Abstract Automatic movie analysis is the task of employing Machine Learning methods to the field of screenplays, movie scripts, and motion pictures to facilitate or enable vari- ous tasks throughout the entirety of a movie’s life-cycle. From helping with making informed decisions about a new movie script with respect to aspects such as its origi- nality, similarity to other movies, or even commercial viability, all the way to offering consumers new and interesting ways of viewing the final movie, many stages in the life-cycle of a movie stand to benefit from Machine Learning techniques that promise to reduce human effort, time, or both. -

AACTA Announces China | Australia Film Forum
Media Release For immediate release AACTA Announces China | Australia Film Forum Tickets have today gone on sale for the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA)’s China | Australia Film Forum, to be held on Tuesday 4 December at Doltone House in Sydney. The latest event to be held as part of AACTA’s Asia International Engagement Program, the Forum aims to further encourage collaboration between filmmakers in Australia and those of our close neighbour, China. As the Chinese film industry continues to grow at pace, so does the Australian film industry’s relationship with it. Earlier this year, two of the biggest China-Australia co-productions yet were announced, THE WHISTLEBLOWER and LEGEND OF SUN AND MOON. The two films follow in the footsteps of other recent co-productions such as AT LAST (2018), THE LONGEST SHOT (2018), GUARDIANS OF THE TOMB (2018), THE DRAGON PEARL (2011) and AFI and AACTA nominated films 33 POSTCARDS (2011) and CHILDREN OF THE SILK ROAD (2008). The past few years has also seen a growing number of Chinese filmmakers choosing to film in Australia, including BLEEDING STEEL (2017) starring Jackie Chan and web series OLD BOY (2018), which has received over 230 million views online and debuted in the number one spot on Hunan Television. AACTA’s China | Australia Film Forum will bring together some of the most important figures working in the Chinese film industry today, including: China-based director and member of AACTA’s 2018 Best Asian Film Grand Jury Renny Harlin (THE LONG KISS GOODNIGHT, SKIPTRACE, THE LEGEND OF THE ANCIENT SWORD, DIE HARD 2 and the upcoming BODIES AT REST); Chinese screenwriter and AACTA Best Asian Film Grand Juror Liu Yi, whose film WOLF WARRIOR II is the highest grossing film in Chinese history, earning AUD $1.2 billion at the box office worldwide; China-based producer Ellen Eliasoph (SHADOW, MOUNTAIN CRY). -
TOP GUN (1986) and the Emergence of the Post-Cinematic by MICHAEL LOREN SIEGEL
5.4 Ride into the Danger Zone: TOP GUN (1986) and the Emergence of the Post-Cinematic BY MICHAEL LOREN SIEGEL Introduction The work of British-born filmmaker Tony Scott has undergone a major critical revision in the last few years. While Scott’s tragic suicide in 2012 certainly drew renewed vigor to this reassessment, it was well underway long before his death. Already by the mid-2000s, Scott’s brash, unapologetically superficial, and yet undeniably visionary films had been appropriated by auteurists and film theorists alike to support a wide range of arguments.[1] Regardless of what we may think of the idea of using auteurism and theory to “rescue” directors who were for decades considered little more than action hacks—an especially meaningful question in the digital age, given the extent to which auteur theory’s acceptance has increased in direct proportion to the growth of online, theoretically informed film criticism—it would be difficult to deny the visual, aural, narrative, thematic, and energetic consistency of Scott’s films, from his first effort, The Hunger (1983), all the way through to his last, Unstoppable (2011). The extreme scale and artistic ambition of his films, the intensity of their aesthetic and affective engagement with Ride into the Danger Zone the present (a present defined, as they constantly remind us, by machines, mass media, masculinity, and militarization), and, indeed, the consistency of their audiovisual design and affect (their bristling, painterly flatness, the exaggerated sense of perpetual transformation and becoming that is conveyed by their soundtracks and montage, the hyperbolic and damaged masculinity of their protagonists)—all of this would have eventually provoked the kind of critical reassessment we are seeing today, even without the new mythos produced around Scott upon his death. -
