Bl. Peter To Rot – Defender of Matrimony by Michael J. Miller on May 31, 2011 in Featured, Marriage ©Heidi Bratton Photography One of the patron saints of World Youth Day 2008 in Sydney, Australia, was Blessed Peter To Rot, a native son of Papua New Guinea. A second-generation Catholic during the evangelization of his Southern Pacific island in the early twentieth century, he was an exemplary husband, father and catechist. In 1945 he suffered martyrdom at the hands of Japanese soldiers for his courageous defense of Christian marriage. New Guinea in Oceania, an island larger than France, is surrounded by many archipelagos that are inhabited by more than a thousand tribes speaking hundreds of different dialects. Method missionaries brought the Gospel to the region in the 1870’s. In 1882 the first group of Missionaries of the Sacred Heart of Jesus arrived in Matupit (today New Britain). To everyone’s surprise, the chief of the village of Rakunai, Angelo To Puia, announced that he and most of the villagers wanted to become Catholic. Maria Ia Tumul, Angelo’s wife, gave birth to their son Peter in 1912; he was the third of their six children. Angelo To Puia made sure that all of them were baptized, and he himself taught them the basic truths of the catechism, while Maria taught them to pray. Even as a child in the missionary school, Peter was a hard-working, exceptional student, who took a great interest in religion. The boy had a mischievous streak, yet was considerate and helpful: he used to climb the palm trees to gather coconuts for elderly villagers, even though as the son of a big chief he could have let others serve him.

House Bill 1005 builds upon the 2011 law establishing Indiana’s Choice Scholarship Program, more commonly known as the voucher program. As he was a decade ago, the lawmaker behind the effort is Rep. Bob Behning (R-Indianapolis). His current proposed legislation, which passed the House Education Committee on Feb. 3, would expand eligibility to allow more parents in Indiana to select the school they believe is best for their children. “We have excellent schools across the state, but it is nearly impossible for them to meet every unique need of every child,” said Behning, chairman of the committee. “Because the coronavirus pandemic has changed how some students attend class, Faith, family and Seton community help parents began considering other options to educate their students. The Jewish Calendar of Liturgical Readings. The dates of the Jewish Festivals, Holy Days and Rosh Chodesh (New Moon) refl ect the dates determined for the Jewish Years, 5781–5782. Rosh Chodesh is celebrated on the fi rst day of each new (Jewish) month. When a month has 30 days Rosh Chodesh is celebrated over two days—the thirtieth day of the month is celebrated as the fi rst day of Rosh Chodesh and the actual fi rst day of the new month is celebrated as the second day of Rosh Chodesh. Dates for the lunar phases for 2018-2019 are based on Jerusalem Time. The Parashat Hashavuah (the Weekly Portion from the Torah) of the Jewish liturgical cycle follows an Annual Cycle of Torah Readings. The Haftarah (the Prophetical) readings follow the Ashkenazi tradition. Where readings vary for the Sephardic tradition the variant readings are given in brackets. • We Are in Need of a Young Believing Church
We are in Need of a Young Believing Church IYCS Theological Reflection April 2018 Glancing through the list of saints of recent past we find that some of them were martyred and died young. All through the centuries there were a number of young saints, because of their fidelity to God, service to the mankind and safeguarding their celibacy in honour of Christ. They were martyred young because they did not compromise with the worldly pleasures. Their zeal for God and their adherence to faith and truth in achieving the mission of Christ was exemplary. Jesus died young for the cause of truth and salvation of humankind. His followers also died for the same cause. Among the saints, the young saints revamped the Church at various ages. We feel, we are in need of such young saints today who could influence us to follow Christ meaningfully. Especially, for those who are lost to the worldly affairs and yearning to find meaning in life. As we celebrate Holy Easter, the Resurrection of Christ, the life experiences of these young saints may help rejuvenate us and the Church by enkindling our spirit to work for the mission of Christ. We are in need of a young believing Church today. Here are a few examples of young saints: St. Agnes of Rome (Age 12) : Since the fourth century, Agnes has been held at the highest honour of all the virgin martyrs. St. Kateri Tekakwitha (Age 24): Kateri was an Algonquin-Mohawk Native American who converted to Catholicism at the age of 19. Her tribe shunned her, but she was relentless in her love for Jesus for the rest of her life.

  • Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus (1873-1897)
SAINT THÉRÈSE OF THE CHILD JESUS (1873-1897) hérèse Martin was born in Alençon, France, on January 2, 1873, Tto Louis Martin and Zélie Guérin, who were canonized together in 2015. After the death of her mother on August 28, 1877, Thérèse moved with her family to the city of Lisieux. Some extraordinary graces accompanied Thérèse’s human and spiritual maturation and allowed her to grow in her awareness of the infinite Mercy of God that is offered to every person. On the day of Pentecost in 1883, she had the unique grace of being healed from a serious illness; through the intercession of Our Lady of Victories. In 1884, she received her First Communion and at that time experienced the grace of intimate union with Christ. Thérèse had a great desire to follow her sisters, Pauline and Marie, into the Carmel of Lisieux to live a contemplative life. While on a pilgrimage to Italy, during an audience that Pope Leo XIII granted to the faithful of the Diocese of Lisieux, she boldly implored the Holy Father to obtain permission to enter Carmel at the age of fifteen. Having obtained his permission, Thérèse entered the monastery in 1888 and professed her vows on September 8, 1890. Her journey of holiness was strengthened by trusting God during mo- ments of great trial, to which she gave witness in her writings, letters, and prayers. Her teaching is also evident in poems and small theatrical per- formances written for recreation with the sisters. As a collaborator in the formation of novices, she undertook transmitting her spiritual experiences condensed into The Little Way of Spiritual Childhood.
