2016 – Fairwell, Matthias In July 2016 the BALOISE SESSION lost its devoted, innovative President and festival founder, Matthias Müller, who passed away at the age of 51 after a serious illness. His long-time business partner and CEO Beatrice Stirnimann, the Members of the Board and the entire BALOISE SESSION-Team will continue to run the festival – his life's work – in accordance with his wishes, and in honour of his memory. Matthias, your festival team will hold you for ever in their hearts! 2015 – 30 Years of Magic Basel's boutique music festival is turning 30! Opening Night on 23 October 2015 will ring in the 30th anniversary festival editon. From then until 12 November, we will be celebrating 30 years of the festival with top quality acts and promising newcomers. This year's line-up will be announced on 26 August. 2013 – New name, same boutique festival With the festival name BALOISE SESSION, a fresh corporate design and the modern Event Hall of the Basel Fair, a new era began for the music festival. With Opening Night on 25 October 2013 the first BALOISE SESSION kicked off with a bang. 2012 – Goodbye AVO SESSION Basel – Hello BALOISE SESSION During the construction of the new event hall, the AVO SESSION Basel took place at the Musical Theater Basel with concert seating. The 2012 festival edition marked the end of the current festival name and the festival‘s partnership with presenting sponsor AVO Cigars. It was announced that starting in 2013, the festival would be called BALOISE SESSION with the new presenting sponsor Baloise and would take place at the Congress Center Basel in the new event hall designed by Herzog & de Meuron. -

In a series of 12 concerts 24 world-famous acts and exciting newcomers will be appearing on stage in the unique intimate club-like setting with candlelight and small tables. The programme includes the finest soul-pop from Emeli Sandé, blues-rock from Jeff Beck, Latin-pop by Alvaro Soler, soul by Seven and country from Kenny Rogers. The future of the popular music festival is assured: Baloise Insurance has ex- tended its partnership as Presenting Sponsor until 2020. A positive signal in a difficult year marked by a major loss: last July festival founder and President Matthias Müller died at the age of 51 after a serious illness. -

Dirigenten kommen und gehen, Orchester bleiben bestehen.” ” (Wolfgang Stresemann)1 5 Gastdirigenten Sie stehen ganz oben auf der Liste wichtiger Personen fur¨ die Berliner Phil- harmoniker - die Gastdirigenten. Allein 72 Konzerte wurden in Berlin in der Saison 2002/03 von ihnen bestritten (vom Chefdirigenten 31). In den funfzig¨ Jahren von 1955 bis 2005 haben etwa 400 Gastdirigenten mit dem Orchester auf der Buhne¨ gestanden, davon ungef¨ahr zwei Drittel nur ein bis dreimal, anfangs oft ersatzweise.2 Viele Gastdirigenten studierten Werke ein, die noch nicht mit Karajan, Abbado oder Rattle in Angriff genommen worden waren. Andere lieferten von h¨aufig gespielten Stucken¨ so eigenwillige Interpretationen, daß den re- gelm¨aßigen Konzertbesucher interessante Vergleiche geboten wurden. Hier Bemerkungen zu einigen Pers¨onlichkeiten. Ein Sonderfall: Leonard Bernstein Von einem ganz Großen, dem New Yorker Leonard Bernstein, soll als erstes berichtet werden. Er hat die Philharmoniker tief beeindruckt, obwohl er nur ein Werk mit ihnen einstudierte, die 9. Sinfonie von Gustav Mahler. Das geschah im Rahmen der Berliner Festwochen im Herbst 1979. Der damalige Chefdirigent Karajan hatte - wie so oft, wenn Gastdirigenten eingeladen wa- ren - anderweitige Verpflichtungen. Ein Treffen kam nicht zustande.3 Bernstein wurden vier Proben zugesagt (die meisten Gastdirigenten erhal- ten nur drei Proben). Als er den Saal betrat, waren die Musiker uberrascht:¨ Was fur¨ eine zierliche Person! Wie leger ist er doch mit seiner Lederjacke, ” dem Armreif und dem gestreiften T-Shirt gekleidet!” In der Hand hielt er eine Zigarettenschachtel. Das hatte man bis dahin noch bei keinem Dirigen- ten erlebt, denn es ist in den Konzerts¨alen verboten zu rauchen - auch bei Proben. -

When international stars like Rod Stewart, Zucchero or P!nk come to Basel, the BALOISE SESSION is sure to be the reason. For the past 31 years, major stars have been coming to this popular Swiss boutique-music festival and have left festival audiences with concert memories they will never forget. Visitors are not only thrilled by the big stars, but also often by the many newcomers at the festival. With pop, rock, singer-songwriter, soul, funk, blues, jazz and world music all in the programme, the richly diverse line-up offers a range of music styles that appeals to all of its approx. 20,000 visitors.
