    A Walk to Church Minshull Aqueduct Marina photo courtesy of Bernie Stafford Aqueduct Marina, the starting point for this walk, was opened in February 2009. The marina has 147 berths, a shop and a café set in beautiful Cheshire countryside. With comprehensive facilities for moorers, visiting boaters and anyone needing to do, or have done, any work on their boat, the marina is an excellent starting point for exploring the Cheshire canal system. Starting and finishing at Church Minshull Aqueduct Marina, this walk takes in some of the prettiest local countryside as well as the picturesque village of Church Minshull and the Middlewich Branch of the Shropshire Union Canal. Some alternative routes are also included at the end to add variation to the walk which is about five or six miles, depending on the exact route taken. Built to join the Trent and Mersey Canal with the Chester Canal, the Middlewich Branch carried mainly coal, salt and goods to and from the potteries. Built quite late in the canal building era, like so many other canals, this canal wasn’t as successful as predicted. Today, however, it is a very busy canal providing an essential link between the Trent and Mersey Canal at Middlewich and the Llangollen Canal as well as being part of the Four Counties Ring and linking to the popular Cheshire Ring boating route. The Route Leaving the marina, walk to the end of the drive and turn north (right) onto the B5074 Church Minshull road and walk to the canal bridge. Cross the canal and turn down the steps on the right onto the towpath, then walk back under the bridge, with the canal on your left.

    IWA SUBMISSION ON THE ENVIRONMENT BILL – APPENDIX A IWA VISION FOR SUSTAINABLE PROPULSION ON THE INLAND WATERWAYS EXECUTIVE OVERVIEW 1. Recognising the UK Government’s strategy to reduce emissions from diesel and petrol engines, IWA formed its Sustainable Propulsion Group in 2019 to identify and monitor developments which will enable boats on the inland waterways to fully contribute to the Government’s stated aim of zero CO2 emissions by 2050. 2. The Group has identified a number potential solutions that it recommends should be progressed in order to ensure that boats used on the inland waterways do not get left behind in technological developments. These are outlined in more detail in this paper. 3. To ensure that the inland waterways continue to be sustainable for future generations, and continue to deliver benefits to society and the economy, IWA has concluded that national, devolved and local government should progress the following initiatives: Investment in infrastructure through the installation of 300 shore power mains connection charging sites across the connected inland waterways network. This would improve air quality by reducing the emissions from stoves for heating and engines run for charging batteries, as well as enabling a move towards more boats with electric propulsion. Working with navigation authorities, investment in a national dredging programme across the inland waterways to make propulsion more efficient. This will also have additional environmental benefits on water quality and increasing capacity for flood waters. Research and investment into the production, use and distribution of biofuels. This will be necessary to reduce the environmental impact of existing diesel engines which, given their longevity, will still be around until well after 2050.

There will be an opportunity for questions after each part but if you need clarification please ask. Welland Water Transfer 1. The current position As we know, our local reservoir is Rutland Water. It is owned by Anglian Water and filled with water abstracted from local rivers under license (and at a cost) from the Environment Agency; the navigation authority for the Stamford to Folly River section of the Welland that we are concerned with. Welland Water Transfer To create the reservoir, the River Gwash was dammed up and it took about 3 years to fill. The River Gwash does help keep it topped up, but 95% of its water actually comes by pumping it in pipes from the River Welland and the River Nene. The map following is the area that affects us. Rutland Water to the Folly River The blue area covers the parish councils alongside the output from the reservoir. The southern edge is also the subject of the Langdyke Trust’s involvement with the John Clare Countryside project. The Folly River is in the bottom right corner.     The Welland Valley Partnership Enhancing the River Welland Our invitation to support a new vision for the local environment January 2013 Foreword The Welland Valley Partnership - Working Together for a Better River The River Welland arises above Market Harborough and flows through the gently rolling countryside of Northamptonshire, Leicestershire and Rutland until it reaches Stamford where it is one of the features that makes the town so attractive. Below Stamford the River continues on its way to Market Deeping and Spalding, where its character changes and the water slows down to become one of the four fenland rivers which drain the Fens and finally enter the Wash. People have relied on the Rivers for thousands of years for water, food, transport and energy; as a result the River Welland and its valley have changed enormously. Even the course of the River Welland has moved; it used to flow through the Trinity Bridge in Crowland, but now runs almost a mile away and the bridge is a dry monument in the centre of the town.
