Corresponding author: Abdulaziz S. Alatawi, [email protected] Abstract Conducting species inventories is important to provide baseline information essential for management and conserva- tion. Aldesa Valley lies in the Tabuk Province of northwest Saudi Arabia and because of the presence of permanent water, is thought to contain high avian richness. We conducted an inventory of avian species in Aldesa Valley, using timed area-searches during May 10–August 10 in 2014 and 2015 to detect species occurrence. We detected 6860 birds belonging to 19 species. We also noted high human use of this area including agriculture and recreational activities. Maintaining species diversity is important in areas receiving anthropogenic pressures, and we encourage additional surveys to further identify species occurrence in Aldesa Valley. The current paper presents an initial analysis of the higher-level disaggregation using the Handbook of the Birds of the World/BirdLife International Illustrated Checklist of the Birds of the World Volumes 1 and 2 taxonomy, and identifies the challenges in completing the analysis to identify all of the migratory species and the corresponding Range States. Oromia is the largest National Regional State of Ethiopia. Here we present the first comprehensive checklist of its birds. A total of 804 bird species has been recorded, 601 of them confirmed (443) or assumed (158) to be breeding birds. At least 561 are all-year residents (and 31 more potentially so), at least 73 are Afrotropical migrants and visitors (and 44 more potentially so), and 184 are Palaearctic migrants and visitors (and eight more potentially so). Three species are endemic to Oromia, 18 to Ethiopia and 43 to the Horn of Africa. 170 Oromia bird species are biome restricted: 57 to the Afrotropical Highlands biome, 95 to the Somali-Masai biome, and 18 to the Sudan-Guinea Savanna biome. -

FURNAS, Wildlife Investigations Laboratory, California Department of Fish and Wildlife, Rancho Cordova, CA 95670, USA ABSTRACT Water often limits the distribution and productivity of wildlife in arid environments. Consequently, resource managers have constructed artificial water catchments (AWCs) in deserts of the southwestern United States, assuming that additional free water benefits wildlife. We tested this assumption by using data from acoustic and camera trap surveys to determine whether AWCs influenced the distributions of terrestrial mammals (>0.5 kg), birds, and bats in the Mojave Desert, California, USA. We sampled 200 sites in 2016–2017 using camera traps and acoustic recording units, 52 of which had AWCs. We identified detections to the species-level, and modeled occupancy for each of the 44 species of wildlife photographed or recorded. Artificial water catchments explained spatial variation in occupancy for 8 terrestrial mammals, 4 bats, and 18 bird species. Occupancy of 18 species was strongly and positively associated with AWCs, whereas 1 species (i.e., horned lark [Eremophila alpestris]) was negatively associated. Access to an AWC had a larger influence on species’ distributions than precipitation and slope and was nearly as influential as temperature. -

Haresi2 December 2010 SUMMARY The objective of the survey was to compare habitats and bird life in the Asir region, particularly Jebal Souda and the Raydah escarpment protected area of the Saudi Wildlife Commission, and adjacent regions of the tihama, with those observed in July 1987 (Jennings, et al., 1988). The two surveys were approximately the same length and equal amounts of time were spent in the highlands and on the tihama. A number of walked censuses were carried out during 2010 on Jebal Souda, using the same methodology as walked censuses in 1987, and the results are compared. Broadly speaking the comparison of censuses revealed that in 2010 there were less birds and reduced diversity on the Jebal Souda plateau, compared to 1987. However in the Raydah reserve the estimates of breeding bird populations compiled in the mid 1990s was little changed as far as could be assessed in 2010. The highland region of south-west Saudi Arabia, especially Jebal Souda, has been much developed since the 1987 survey and is now an important internal recreation and resort area. This has lead to a reduction in the region’s importance for terraced agriculture. -

A Survey of the Birds in South Sinai, Egypt
A survey of the birds in South Sinai, Egypt From 28 June to 05 August 2006 we conducted bird surveys of the birds in the south Sinai peninsula, Egypt, mountains, wadis (ephemeral river beds), plains, and oases in and adjacent to the St. Katherine Protectorate Important Bird Area. We recorded 30 bird species, of which nine were migrants and only three were birds of prey. The most abundant species were Rock Dove, Rock Martin and Laughing Dove and the most widespread species was White-Tailed Wheatear, which was detected in all 38 surveys. Most vegetation in the St. Katherine Protectorate occurs in gardens managed by Jabaliya Bedouin people. Birds in the St. Katherine Protectorate are threatened by recent shifts from traditional fruit crops to cannabis plantations and by the demands placed on scarce water supplies by a recent increase in tourism. A critical area for both resident and migrant birds, the St. Katherine Protectorate deserves ongoing protection, appropriate management, with more detailed research and community- based conservation. Introduction Located where the Asian and Africa continents meet, the Sinai Peninsula is a distinctive biological region with characteristic flora and fauna (Zalat et al 2001). The region has a predominantly mountainous environment consisting of different drainage systems made up of a number of connected wadis. Geologically the peninsula is split into three sections; the northern sand dunes, a central limestone plateau, and high altitude igneous rock mountains in the south. South Sinai lies in the North African belt and has a Saharan-Mediterranean climate. Summers are hot, with a mean temperature of 36°c (August) and winters are cool with a mean minimum temperature of - 7.8°c (February). -

Some notes on the Rufous Warbler By Bryan L. Sage INTRODUCTION THIS PAPER is based primarily on observations made from May to October 1958 at Khanaqin in eastern Iraq, a border town on the banks of the Alwand River in the foothills of the Jebel Hamrin Mountains, about 90 miles north-east of Baghdad. When I arrived in the area incubation was already under way, so my notes do not cover the periods of courtship display and nest-building. I use the name Rufous Warbler for this bird only because this is the one under which it appears in most British books, including A Field Guide to the Birds of Britain and Europe (1954) and the Check- List of the Birds of Great Britain and Ireland (1952). The race occurring at Khanaqin is Erythropjgia (Agrobates) galactotes familiaris, whilst the races on the British List are E. g. galactotes and E. g. sjriacus, the latter being called the Brown-backed Warbler by Witherby et al. (1938). TAXONOMIC POSITION It may seem out of place to discuss taxonomy in a paper based on field observations, but in the present case the latter are of value in assessing the affinities of the species. The Rufous Warbler was included by Witherby (pp. cit.) and most other taxonomists of the inter-war period in the Sylviinae (Old World warblers), where it was placed in the monotypic genus Agrobates; originally Temminck (1820) had named the typical race in the genus Sylvia. Meinertzhagen (1949), whilst agreeing that it should be in the Sylviinae, pointed out the complete lack of any characters separating the genus Agrobates from the Ethiopian genus Erythropjgia and therefore merged the two, the latter being the older name and therefore having priority.
