The Isabel Miller papers include diaries (beginning when she was in her early teens), correspondence offering rich documentation of her personal life, from her years as a member of WAVES during World War II and as wife and mother of four daughters in a heterosexual marriage, to her coming out as a lesbian and her life thereafter. According to her partner Julie Weber, Routsong deliberately made sure that her handwriting was difficult to read so that her diaries wouldn't be accessible to others; she later created typed, transcribed copies. Research and manuscript materials document the evolution of her profession as an author of lesbian fiction, the best known of which is Patience and Sarah . The collection also offers a personal record of the lesbian communities of New York City and the mid-Hudson Valley region, from the 1960s to 90s and includes transcripts of a lesbian consciousness raising group, extensive personal correspondence, and documentation of Miller's spiritual interests, including her numerous astrological charts of women. Correspondents include Sidney Abbott, Dorothy Baker, Noel Phyllis Birkby, Barbara Love, Dolores Alexander, Joan Casamo, Linda Clarke, Kate Millett, Diane Stevenson, Mildred Stewart, and May Swenson. The collection also includes books by Miller (some in foreign languages); books from Miller's library; photographs; transparencies of Miller's family, friends and travels; memorabilia; artwork; and articles, clippings and printed materials. Isabel Miller (pen name of Alma Routsong, born Elma Louise Routsong, November 26, 1924 – October 4, 1996) was an American author. Miller began college, in 1942, and graduated in art from Michigan State University, in 1949. During World War II, she served two years in the U.S. Navy. Miller married Bruce Brodie in 1947, and their first daughter was born in 1949. The couple had four daughters. In 1962, Miller met Elizabeth Deran at a church event and they fell in love. That same year, Isabel divorced her husband. Deran was forced to leave her job, when their relationship became known. They then moved to Greenwich Village in the 1960’s, and Miller became involved in the queer community. She joined the Gay Liberation Movement in 1970, and took part in the meetings held at the Daughters of Bilitis (the first national lesbian political and social organization in the United States), where she was once arrested during a police raid. “One of the things Gay people need is to have our artists pay attention to us, use us as their topic. It’s disappointing when Gay people with big talent don’t want to give it to us.” Isabel Miller. Interview. Miller began her literary career in 1953, and published two novels under her own name ( A Gradual Joy and Round Shape ). In 1969, she self- published A Place for Us under the pseudonym Isabel Miller, after numerous rejections from publishers. She sold copies of it at Daughters of Bilitis meetings, and the novel was then picked up by a publisher and reissued as Patience and Sarah, in 1971. It won the first Stonewall Book Award in 1971. Miller and Deran separated in the 1970’s. Between 1968 and 1971, Miller worked as an editor at Columbia University, and, from the mid-1970s until 1986, she worked as a proof-reader for Time Magazine. Miller lived with artist Julie Weber in Poughkeepsie, New York, for the last 18 years of her life.     Sex and Laughter in Women's Music, 1970-77 Sarah Dougher The women's music movement of the early 1970s was created by and for women who came to political consciousness as a result of the women's liberation movement. The music culture that emerged, originally called "lesbian music;' gained the less controversial descriptor "women's music" as institutions such as record labels, distribution networks, and production companies evolved to meet audience demand (Lont 1992:242). What differ­ entiated "women's music" from other music made by women of the period was its lesbian focus (in both lyrics and performance contexts). Artists such as Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon, and Joan Baez had mainstream success with music that is almost identical sonically with women's music (folk-based, singer-songwriter, solo performance), and which explored topics of inter­ est to women who were benefiting from a world irrevocably altered by the feminist movement, a world that included having sex outside of marriage, earning your own money, ambivalence about family life, and living alone.] Outside of the women's music movement, music produced during this period rarely make explicit links with emerging feminist consciousness, but those few songs that did have become anthemic: "Respect," Aretha Franklin's 1967 cover of a song by Otis Redding, "I am Woman," Helen Reddy's 1972 hit, and, to a lesser degree, Honey Cone's 1971 song "Want Ads." Women's music, on the other hand, was created for a lesbian audience to describe lesbian experiences and desires: it was "music by women, for women, about women, and financially controlled by women" (Lont 1992:242).

(Credit: New York Public Library Collection) Sidney Abbott was a lot of things to many different people. To some, she was a noted feminist and lesbian rights activist. To others she was a warm friend and champion for the underdog. To her nephew, David Abbott, she was his “cool aunt who lived in the Village.” Friends and family gathered for a memorial service at North Fork United Methodist Church in Cutchogue Saturday to share their stories about Ms. Abbott, who died in an April 15 fire at her Southold home. She was 77. In 1972, Ms. Abbott and Barbara Love co-wrote a book called “Sappho was a Right-on Woman: A Liberated View of Lesbianism.” “It was the first non-fiction book with a positive view of the lesbian lifestyle,” Ms. Love recalled at Saturday’s memorial, which was attended by about 60 people. “It was published in 1972, when we were still considered sick by the American Psychiatric Association.” Ms. Love read from the introduction of the book: “”Our goal is to be able to go about our lives as human beings, as women, as lesbians, unselfconsciously, and to be able to spend all of our energy and time on work and fun and not on the arts of concealment or self-hatred. But we know that such a simple goal will be achieved only by sweeping adjustments in the way many people think.” She said the book was written in 1971 and, while it may sound a bit dated, still has meaning for many.
