Following the usual practice, the bark and sapwood of each tree had been cut away for a distance on one side and a pot hung at the bottomto catch the resin. The scarred trunks of the disfiguredtrees were reeking with oozing resin, and here and there insects of various kinds were imbeddedwhere theyhad been trapped by the sticky exudation. -

Some years ago it came to my knowledge that this genus occurs in Japan, and this stimulated my particular interest in this genus on account of its distributional pattern. With the help of many entomologists there have been available for my study a good number of species of the genus collected in Japan and Taiwan in addition to the already described three from North America. A revision of the genus on the basis of these species is here attempted in the hope that it should engage the attention of entomologists in both Asia and America to this interesting genus, since it is quite possible that our knowledge still covers small part of the genus. The genus Nepalomyia is more fully characterized and the Nearctic species are revised. Nepalomyia nigricornis (Van Duzee) and N. sombrea (Harmston & Knowlton) are reassigned and redescribed. Two new species, N. dilaticosta Runyon & Hurley and N. hesperia Runyon & Hurley, are described. He was their fourth child, having two older brothers and an older sister, and was their only child born in Utah. The Harmston branch of the family tree traces its roots back to Lincolnshire, England, where a town bears their name. His father was born in Missouri in 1861 and died in Roosevelt, in 1922. His mother was born in Maine in 1869 and also died in Roosevelt, in 1937. Fred’s parents met in Hyannis, Nebraska, and were married November 27, 1897, in Wessington Springs, South Dakota, the first couple to be wed in the new Congregational Church. Fred’s father was a pharmacist, and a graduate of the College of Optometry in Chicago, Illinois. He operated drug stores in Teluride Colorado, Weiser Idaho, White Lake and Wessington Springs in South Dakota, and finally in Roosevelt Utah. The family arrived in Roosevelt four years after it was settled. -

A total of 30 asilid species representing 22 genera are listed in this paper from Tehran province. Of these, Neoitamus senectus Richter, Stenopogon rufipilus ruficauda Engel and Rhadinus ungulinus Loew are new records for the fauna of Iran. Additionally, prey records and distributional data are provided for asilid species. Diostrucus morimotoi sp. nov. is distinctive in having additional setulae on scutellum, and extensively yellow legs and it is described from southern part of the Korean Peninsula. Diostrclcus maculatus Negrobov, 1980, described from the Primorsky Territory is here recorded from many localities in southern Korea. Introduction The hydrophorine genus Diostracus Loew, 1861, includes dolichopodids living on wet rocks and stones in mountain streams.Although it is widely distributed in the northern hemisphere from Europe to North America through Eastern Asia. it prospers extremely in temperate Eastern Asia, where 62 out of 66 named species are distributed. This genus is known from Europe, the best-surveyed region for dolichopodid fauna. only by Diostrucus Zeucostomus (Loew) from Alps, and from N. America by three species. Numbers of species in each region in Eastern Asia are as follows: Far East Russia (5). Japan (12), Taiwan (3), China (l), Burma (4), Nepal (37+1 unnamed). -

B iCkel 2 The Australian Museum, 6–8 College Street, Sydney, NSW 2000, Australia; email: [email protected] The genus Paraliancalus was originally proposed by Parent (1938) for the single endemic Hawaiian species Liancalus metallicus Grimshaw, 1901, a widespread species found on most of the main Hawaiian islands. it is one of the largest Hawaiian dolichopodids, being some 8 mm in length. Possibly due to this large size and assuming the genus contained only one species, dolichopodid workers have not paid close attention to specific morphological characters of the specimens, assuming all belonged to the type species, P. metallicus . Recently, examination of a few male specimens in the Bishop Museum by one of us (DJB), showed that the genus is actually represented in Hawaii by two morpho-species, both of which are similar in appearance but differ in leg and genitalic characters. After borrowing specimens from the University of Hawai‘i insect Museum and examining all material in the Bishop Museum, we conclude that there are indeed two species of Paraliancalus in Hawai‘i. We herein describe and illustrate the second species as Para - liancalus laciniafemur , n. sp ., which is thus far known only from the island of Maui. -

And why are they important? What’s the difference between Arthropods and Insects? Most of this guide is comprised of insects. These are animals that have three body segments- head, thorax, and abdomen, three pairs of legs, and usually have wings, although there are several wingless forms of insects. Insects are of the Class Insecta and they make up the largest class of the phylum called Arthropoda (arthropods). However, the phylum Arthopoda includes other groups as well including Crustacea (crabs, lobsters, shrimps, barnacles, etc.), Myriapoda (millipedes, centipedes, etc.) and Arachnida (scorpions, king crabs, spiders, mites, ticks, etc.). Arthropods including insects and all other animals in this phylum are characterized as animals with a tough outer exoskeleton or body-shell and flexible jointed limbs that allow the animal to move. Although this guide is comprised mostly of insects, some members of the Myriapoda and Arachnida can also be found here. Remember they are all arthropods but only some of them are true ‘insects’. Entomologist - A scientist who focuses on the study of insects! What’s bugging entomologists? Although we tend to call all insects ‘bugs’ according to entomology a ‘true bug’ must be of the Order Hemiptera. So what exactly makes an insect a bug? Insects in the order Hemiptera have sucking, beak-like mouthparts, which are tucked under their “chin” when Metallic Green Bee (Agapostemon sp.) not in use. -

Introduction The family Dolichopodidae, commonly known as Long legged flies, are one of the most diverse families of Diptera (Grichanov,1999). Adult dolichopodids vary in size from about 1-9 mm in length and can be recognized by their elongate legs, reduced wing venation, aristate antennae, and relatively slender build. Most species are metallic greenish-blue to greenish-bronze, while some others are non-metallic yellowish (e.g., some species of Achalcus Loew, Argyrochlamys Lamb, Neurigona Rondani, Xanthochlorus Loew and Xanthina Aldrich), or brown to blackish (e.g., several species of Micromorphus Mik and Medetera Fischer von Waldheim). Dolichopodids are widespread and are found in all zoogeographic regions (Robinson,1970; Dyte, 1975; Dyte and Smith ,1980; Bickel and Dyte, 1989; Negrobov, 1991; Pollet et al., 2004). In general, adults and larvae prefer moist environments including stream and lake margins, humid forests, saltmarshes, seashores, and freshwater seepages, where they often occur in large numbers. -
