Baretiana ( Phacelia subg. Phacelia ) contains three taxa: P. bolanderi , P. hydrophylloides, and P. procera . Typifications and an updated key for these taxa are provided here. Lectotypes are designated for P. hydrophylloides and P. procera . Phacelia sect. Baretiana Walden & R. Patt. ( Phacelia subg. Phacelia ) is a monophyletic clade consisting of P. bolanderi A. Gray, P. hydrophylloides A. Gray, and P. procera Torr. ex A. Gray (Walden 2010; Walden & Patterson 2012; Walden et al. 2014). Needed lectotypifications and pertinent discussion are given here, and an updated key to distinguish the species is also presented. KEY TO SPECIES OF PHACELIA SECT . This information represents what was known at the end of the 1994 field season. These maps may not represent the most recent information on distribution and range for these taxa but it does illustrate geographic distribution across the assessment area. For many of these species, this is the first time information has been compiled on this scale. For the continued viability of many of these taxa, it is imperative that we begin to manage for them across their range and across administrative boundaries. Of the 173 taxa analyzed, there are maps for 153 taxa. For those taxa that were not tracked by heritage programs, we were not able to generate range maps. Bigelow Lakes Botanical Area Leader: Kristi Mergenthaler (Botanist), Dennis Odion (Ecologist) Difficulty: Moderate hiking. Description: In the Spirit of the Siskiyous, Journals of a Mountain Naturalist, Mary Paetzel wrote, “Bigelow Lakes settle deep in the Siskiyous above Oregon Caves National Monument. At an elevation of 5,900 feet, they are considered “high country” in this area (and remind me of the “high country” of Southwest Colorado, my childhood home).” Floristic Highlights: Some rare and endemic plants we will see include: Gentiana plurisetosa, Iliamna latibracteata, Quercus sadleriana, and Quercus garryana var breweri. Other nifty plants include Botrichium multifidum, Castilleja arachnoidea, Kelloggia galioides and Isoetes occidentalis. If you like big, easy-to- identify sedges you can’t go wrong with Carex aquatilis, C. exsiccata, C. lenticularis, C. luzalina along with Scirpus congdonii and S. microcarpus. Lovely large wet meadows in a dramatic glacially-carved granitic cirque are jammed with Veratrum californicum, Helenium bigelovii and other flowering morsels. Marvel at three species of Potentilla growing together and one of the most-western populations of aspen. General Driving Directions: From Selma continue south on Hwy 199. Turn left (east) in Cave Junction and travel 18 miles on Hwy 46. Drive into the parking lot at Oregon Caves, turn around, head back down hill and immediately turn right on gravel road FS-960 and head uphill (steep at first) 2.7 miles, then right on FS-074 0.5 mile, and right on FS-079 0.8 mile to the trailhead parking area. Two choices to reach the old trailhead 0.6 miles from the present trailhead: walk the old road, or take the new trail segment upslope from the old roadbed, under the forest canopy. -

ISSN 2153 733X ANNOTATED CHECKLIST OF THE FLORA OF THE SIERRA VALLEY REGION OF SIERRA AND PLUMAS COUNTIES, CALIFORNIA WILLIAM HARNACH P.O Box 28 Calpine, California 96124 [email protected] ABSTRACT The Sierra Valley region of California is unique in that three floristic zones converge in this mountain valley, the Sierra Nevada from the west, the Great Basin from the east, and to a slight degree the Cascade Range from the north. A checklist of the flora includes 93 families, 434 genera, and 1153 documented species; geographic ranges of another 125 species suggest that they also may occur in the area, for a total of 1278 species. Sierra Valley is a large mountain valley located east of the Sierra Nevada crest. The geology of this region is complex but in a simplistic form it is a down-faulted block basin (graben) filled with volcanic ash deposits and lake sediments, similar to Lake Tahoe in geologic origin. This has resulted in an inverted “L” shaped flat basin, with an average elevation of 4900 feet over an area of approximately 208 square miles. THE BEE FAUNA OF THE HORSE MOUTAIN AND GROUSE MOUNTAIN REGION, HUMBOLDT COUNTY, CALIFORNIA By Carrie Lopez A Thesis Presented to The Faculty of Humboldt State University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Science in Biology Committee Membership Dr. Michael Mesler, Committee Chair Dr. Robbin Thorp, Committee Member Dr. Mihai Tomescu, Committee Member Dr. Erik Jules, Committee Member Dr. Erik Jules, Program Graduate Coordinator May 2017 ABSTRACT THE BEE FAUNA OF THE HORSE MOUNTAIN AND GROUSE MOUNTAIN REGION, HUMBOLDT COUNTY Carrie Lopez Recent concerns about the ecological well-being of bee communities in California and elsewhere have increased the need for monitoring programs and studies that evaluate the impact of habitat loss and alteration on bee diversity and abundance. Such studies depend critically on the expertise of people trained in taxonomy, but their numbers have declined in recent years. My primary goal was to gain a comprehensive first-hand experience with bee identification by documenting the fauna of a previously unstudied area in the mountains of northwestern California and by writing an identification key, intended for dedicated non-specialists, to the area’s 35 species of the genus Andrena. I used a combination of aerial netting (103 hours) and pan-trapping (138 hours) to sample the bee communities at 29 sites along a 15.4 km road transect in the Horse and Grouse Mountain region of Humboldt County, California, at elevations ranging from 1200-1600 m, during the summer of 2013. The total area of my survey plots was 17.6 hectares. My collection of 3,643 specimens revealed a fauna of 229 species, 20% of which were unidentified morphospecies, distributed across 39 genera and five of the six North American bee families.
