Dublin, Ireland: Dublin, Ireland’s largest city (and capital for more than a thousand years), is currently enjoying its status as one of the hottest, most livable cities in Europe, where so many literary greats were born (James Joyce, yes, but also Jonathan Swift, Oscar Wilde, W.B. Yeats, George Bernard Shaw and Samuel Beckett, to name a few). While Dublin shows off trendy coffee houses, foodie-friendly restaurants and smart boutiques filled with Burberry-clad shoppers there’s still much to see from days gone by in this historical city. Dublin is one of Europe’s most lauded cities-- and with diversions for every taste, it lives up to its reputation. Belfast, Northern Ireland: If you’ve been to Dublin, the differences between that city and Belfast may seem striking. Belfast is part of Northern Ireland, which itself is part of the United Kingdom; the Re- public of Ireland is part of... just the Republic of Ireland. British influence seems to have coated Belfast with a more polished veneer and a Victorian elegance that’s evident in the town’s shops, restaurants, and even its pubs. The omnipresent Irish charm still exists but Belfast also projects a cosmopolitan flair that’s rarely seen elsewhere on the Emerald Isle. The city has come a long way since the days of security checkpoints and armored patrols and Belfast now appears poised to shed its unfortunate past and take its place among Europe’s new hot spots. Victorian elegance mixes with Irish charm in this city. Reykjavik, Iceland: Europe’s northernmost and westernmost capital is a delightful destination, part old Norse, part modern city, with a quirky personality of its own. More than half of Iceland’s population lives in Reykjavik (or nearby) in one of the world’s smallest capital cities -- some 190,000 people. From late May to early October, especially during the summer months when the daylight literally lasts ‘round the clock, visitors and residents alike seem to stay awake, golfing, strolling the compact town’s pic- turesque streets, drinking Gull beer at sidewalk cafes, and cycling along the seafront promenade. The Iceland landscape is bare and covered with volcanic rock. The geothermal springs that bubble under- ground have been put to work to provide hot water for residents. As charming as it is no visit to Iceland is complete without getting out into the vast interior which lies at the city’s doorstep. Reykjavik is a safe city with a vibe all its own. Akureyri, Iceland: A call in Akureyri provides cruisers with a cute town to explore and makes a perfect gateway to northern Iceland’s geothermal phenomena. Lake Myvatn, home to bubbling hotpots, thermal baths, craters, and lava formations is less than two hours away. For a once-in-a-lifetime experi- ence, consider a flightseeing trip over this geothermal wonderland; if an eruption is going on you might even see lava spurting into the air. Lerwick, Shetland Islands, Scotland: Lerwick, the Shetland Islands’ capital, is undeniably multifac-eted. Superficially, Lerwick’s architecture reflects that of its past -- deeply rooted in Dutch traditions with stone-facade buildings known as lodberries lining the busy port. A gift to Scotland from a Danish princess in the late 1400s, the town wasn’t actually founded as a port until the late 17th century. The locals’ warm and embracing personalities are a near-perfect blend of Norwegian and Scottish. With vibrant green-hued hills flanking the beautiful Bressay Sound, be sure to book an excursion that gets you outside to explore the wildlife (like the Shetland ponies) and the stunning scenery. DAY 1: ARRIVE IRELAND: Upon arrival at the Shannon airport depart for the Cliffs of Moher, one of Ireland’s most breath-taking natural wonders. View the staggering height of the rock face and the even more staggering beauty of the views from the top. Depart the Cliffs of Moher and drive through the rustic beauty of Burren to Poulnabrone Dolmen Tomb, one of the most photographed megalithic monuments in Ireland. The site was excavated in 1986 and produced the human remains of 16 adults and children plus other artefacts dating to about 3600 BC. Next, travel to Kinvara Fishing Village, a picturesque fishing village located on the South Shores of the famous Galway Bay. The Irish name for Kinvara is ‘Chinn Mhara’ which translates as ‘the head of the sea.’ That is exactly where Kinvara is located - at the head of Kinvara Bay. Take some time for lunch on your own as you explore this quaint town. Depart approximately 1:00pm for a 2:15pm arrival at the magnificent Ashford Castle. Enjoy a group dinner in the castle’s Dungeon Restaurant. DAY 2: FULL DAY TOUR: At 8:30 am, travel to the beautiful village of Leenane, snugly situated at the head of Killary Harbour and often described as the ‘Gateway to Connemara.’ The roads from Maam, Clifden, and Westport meet at this point. Killary Harbour extends ten miles inland and with the mountains rising steeply on either side provides what is prob-ably the best scenery in Ireland. Next via Killary Fjord, travel to Kylemore Abbey, one of Ireland’s best loved and most iconic tourist attractions and home to the Benedictine nuns since 1920. Visit the restored rooms of the Abbey and learn about its history of tragedy, romance, education, innovation, and spirituality. Explore the 6-acre Victorian Walled Garden with its delightfully restored garden buildings. Discover woodland and lakeshore walks that will take you on a beautiful journey through our 1,000- acre estate. Depart Kylemore for Galway City for some free time and lunch on your own. As soon as you arrive enjoy a walk through the city streets where you’ll find lively pubs, shops, and winding cobblestone streets packed with students, artists, writers, and craftspeople.
