ALTERNATE FORMATS: RELATED HOLDINGS: ACCESSION 2007.0120 NUMBER: NOTES: HISTORICAL SKETCH On 8 July 1863, Confederate General John Hunt Morgan with about 2,460 men conducted an unauthorized raid into the states of Indiana and Ohio in hope of diverting Union forces from battle in Tennessee. Morgan also hoped to receive help from Confederate sympathizers in these states and disrupt life in the North. Coming across the Ohio at Mauckport, Indiana, and raided several towns in Southeastern Indiana, before crossing over into Ohio on 15 July. Morgan and most of his men were later captured on 26 July. Only about 400 of the men made it back. Morgan was placed in the Ohio State Penitentiary where he later escaped. Source: Encyclopedia of the American Civil War. John Hunt Morgan’s Christmas Raid By Tim Asher In December 1862, the rebel army was back in Tennessee after the Confederate disappointment at Perryville, Kentucky. The Confederates found themselves under constant pressure from the growing Union presence in Tennessee commanded by Gen. William Rosecrans. All indications were that the Union General was planning a winter campaign as soon as adequate supplies were collected at Nashville. The Confederate commander of the Army of Tennessee General Braxton Bragg understood his situation and was determined to stop the flow of war materials into Nashville as best he could. To do this, he called upon his newly promoted brigadier general and Kentucky native John Hunt Morgan to break Rosecrans’ L&N supply line somewhere in Kentucky. The L&N railroad carried food, forage, and supplies from Louisville through the uneven terrain of Kentucky to the Union army’s depot at Nashville. Reports were that the L&N tracks were heavily guarded to prepare for the push on Bragg. But an ever confident Morgan believed that, regardless of the fortifications, a weakness could be found just north of Elizabethtown in an area know generally as Muldraugh’s hill. Muldraugh’s hill is an escarpment rising from the Ohio River to an elevation of over 400 feet in just five miles and crisscrossed by streams and gorges. Morgan’s knowledge of the area probably came from the Brigadier General John experience of his brother-in-law and second in command, Hunt Morgan, CSA Colonel Basil Duke who in 1861 had walked through the area avoiding Federal capture in Elizabethtown.

Spring Grove Cemetery, once characterized as blending "the elegance of a park with the pensive beauty of a burial-place," is the final resting- place of forty Cincinnatians who were generals during the Civil War. Forty For the Union: Civil War Generals Buried in Spring Grove Cemetery by James Barnett f the forty Civil War generals who are buried in Spring Grove Cemetery, twenty-three had advanced from no military experience whatsoever to attain the highest rank in the Union Army. This remarkable feat underscores the nature of the Northern army that suppressed the rebellion of the Confed- erate states during the years 1861 to 1865. Initially, it was a force of "inspired volunteers" rather than a standing army in the European tradition. Only seven of these forty leaders were graduates of West Point: Jacob Ammen, Joshua H. Bates, Sidney Burbank, Kenner Garrard, Joseph Hooker, Alexander McCook, and Godfrey Weitzel. Four of these seven —Burbank, Garrard, Mc- Cook, and Weitzel —were in the regular army at the outbreak of the war; the other three volunteered when the war started. Only four of the forty generals had ever been in combat before: William H. Lytle, August Moor, and Joseph Hooker served in the Mexican War, and William H. Baldwin fought under Giuseppe Garibaldi in the Italian civil war. This lack of professional soldiers did not come about by chance. When the Constitutional Convention met in Philadelphia in 1787, its delegates, who possessed a vast knowledge of European history, were determined not to create a legal basis for a standing army. The founding fathers believed that the stand- ing armies belonging to royalty were responsible for the endless bloody wars that plagued Europe.

BENTON COUNTY Fighting on the Tennessee River: located at Birdsong Marina, 225 Marina Rd., Hwy 191 N., Camden, TN 38327. During the Civil War, several engagements occurred along the strategically important Tennessee River within about five miles of here. In each case, cavalrymen engaged naval forces. On April 26, 1863, near the mouth of the Duck River east of here, Confederate Maj. Robert M. White’s 6th Texas Rangers and its four-gun battery attacked a Union flotilla from the riverbank. The gunboats Autocrat, Diana, and Adams and several transports came under heavy fire. When the vessels drove the Confederate cannons out of range with small-arms and artillery fire, Union Gen. Alfred W. Ellet ordered the gunboats to land their forces; signalmen on the exposed decks “wig-wagged” the orders with flags. BLOUNT COUNTY Maryville During the Civil War: located at 301 McGee Street, Maryville, TN 37801. During the antebellum period, Blount County supported abolitionism. In 1822, local Quakers and other residents formed an abolitionist society, and in the decades following, local clergymen preached against the evils of slavery. When the county considered secession in 1861, residents voted to remain with the Union, 1,766 to 414. Fighting directly touched Maryville, the county seat, in August 1864. Confederate Gen. Joseph Wheeler’s cavalrymen attacked a small detachment of the 2nd Tennessee Infantry (U.S.) under Lt. James M. Dorton at the courthouse. The War Between the States split the nation deeply and divided Kentucky, pitting friend against friend, neighbor against neighbor, brother against brother, and even father against son. WKentucky’s future was forever changed by the events of the Civil War. In commemoration of the Civil War’s sesquicentennial, we are pleased to share with you a wide array of Kentucky perspectives and issues that developed throughout the war. What would Abraham Lincoln say about slavery and the Civil War if he were alive today? Stephen A. Brown conducts a “conversation” with President Lincoln through chronicled speeches and writings. His article is on page 7. Camp Nelson played a pivotal role in the destruction of slavery in the Commonwealth. W. Stephen McBride shares the history of Kentucky’s largest recruitment and training center for Ben Chandler African American soldiers and what remains of Camp Nelson today. Executive Director John Hunt Morgan is widely known for his Confederate Cavalry raids, overshadowing fellow Kentucky Humanities Council Kentuckian George Martin Jessee, known as “Naughty Jessee.” Mark V. Wetherington tells us about the lesser known Confederate Cavalryman on page 15. While Kentucky’s men were off fighting for both the Union and the Confederacy, their wives, mothers, sisters, and daughters were left to take care of the family and home. On page 18, Nancy Baird shares the stories of several Kentucky women who bravely kept the home fires burning during the Civil War.

John Hunt Morgan Heritage Trail On July 2, 1863, John Hunt Morgan and his Confederate Cavalry started moving north through Kentucky on a raid that would encompass three states and 950 miles. His 2,000 man cavalry entered Ohio on July 13, 1863 spreading fear throughout the villages in Ohio. Morgan and his men entered Guernsey County near sundown on July 23. Worn out from the constant pursuit of Union forces and hours in the saddle, the Southern men sought a brief respite in the village of Cumberland. The uninvited guests visited homes and demanded food and rest. Nearly 100 horses were also either bought or stolen by the Confederates to replace the worn out steeds that they had thoroughly abused. The local population complied with these demands, seeking only to remain uninjured as trepidation spread throughout the region. By 10 p.m., the raiders had vacated Cumberland. With the forced aid of local men as guides, they traveled east through Point Pleasant, (now Pleasant City), Hartford, (now Buffalo), and arrived at Senecaville in the early morning hours of Friday, July 24. With reports of Union reinforcement to the east, the raiders turned north towards Campbell’s Station, but not before acquiring more food and horses from residents. Near dawn, Morgan and his men arrived at Campbell’s Station, (now Lore City), inflicting the harshest damage of the raid. They burned a bridge, several railcars, a tobacco warehouse and stole nearly $4,000 from a safe. From there, the Confederates thundered north to Washington, (now Old Washington), and commandeered meals from the proprietors of the American Hotel.

Mowery, historian of the Ohio Civil War Trail Commission During the American Civil War, from July 2 through July 26, 1863, Confederate brigadier general John Hunt Morgan led a division of approximately 2,460 cavalrymen and a battery of four guns from Burkesville, Kentucky, to West Point, Ohio, on a one thousand-mile raid designed to divert Union forces away from Tennessee. Known interchangeably as the Indiana-Ohio Raid, the Ohio Raid or the Great Raid, Morgan’s incursion into Union-held western Kentucky, southern Indiana, and southern and eastern Ohio marked the pinnacle of Morgan’s career, but it led to the destruction of one of the South’s greatest cavalry divisions. The Union cavalry of the Provisional Division, 2,500 men led first by Brigadier General Edward Hobson and then subsequently led by Brigadier General James Shackelford, were successful at bringing Morgan’s raiders to bay. When General Morgan surrendered near West Point, Ohio, on July 26, he had with him 364 men and officers from the original 2,460. No more than 500 men of the division successfully reached Confederate lines. Nevertheless, Morgan’s Great Raid falls on the list of groundbreaking military achievements in world history, not for its outcome, but for its execution.
