WHEN the worker in photography is desirous of teaching himself the art, he naturally turns to the standard text-books in order to prevent frequent failures and mistakes. Many of the books published upon photography are too far advanced to be of any service, except to those who are well versed in chemistry and optics. It was to override this great difficulty that at the instance of the Editor of the Amateur Photographer I contributed to that paper the Dictionary OF Photography. It was published through a series of numbers, and, at the earnest request of many subscribers, the Editor prevailed upon me to issue the Dictionary in book form. As far as possible the information has been brought up to date ; it is written throughout in the plainest language at my command, and is, I trust, practically a complete encyclopaedia of photography. I shall feel grateful if those finding errors in cal- culations or formulae will communicate with me through the publishers, in order that in subsequent editions corrections may be made. PREFACE. I have to thankfully acknowledge help and advice from many workers in the art-science of photography, and I confidently leave the result of my labours and their co-operation to await the verdict of the public, and dedicate the Dictionary to all who *• Hold as 'twere the mirror up to Nature." E. J. WALL. London, 1SS9. DICTIONARY OF PHOTOGRAPHY. Aberration. A term applied to the lens to denote the varia- tion between the foci of rays of light which are transmitted through the centre of the lens and those which are transmitted through or near its margin ; also to denote the separation or decomposition of light by the surface of a lens, so that the constituent rays are not all brought to the same focus. The first is called Spherical, the latter Chromatic aberration. To spherical aberration is due that fuzziness or want of sharpness near the margins of the focussing screen in uncorrected lenses. To the latter is due the annoying defect of lenses when the chemical and visual foci do not coincide, when the camera, after focussing, must be racked in towards the lens—from one-thirtieth to one-fortieth of the focal length is the usual run—before the plate is exposed. Both are corrected by combining lenses differing in form and in the kind of glass of which they are made. Accelerator. A term applied to any substance which is used to shorten the duration of development and to obtain the impres- sion of the slightest impact of actinic light. Thus, in alkaline pyro development the alkali is the accelerator, and with ferrous o.xalate, hyposulphite of soda, common salt, perchloride of mer- cury have been recommended. A few drops of a weak solution of hypo have a wonderful effect in bringing up detail in an instantaneous negative. Common salt has also a beneficial! effect, especially with positive bromide papers, bringing up the detail evenly and gradually before the shadows can become blocked. The addition of hypo and chloride of soda to ferrous oxalate developer is stated to materially shorten the time of exposure, but it is doubtful whether the action is not rather limited to producing a visible image of every ray of light, which may not be the case with ordinary development. I ; 2 DICTIONARY OF PHOTOGRAPHY. Achromatic, when applied to a lens, signifies that it has been corrected for chromatic aberration, and that the images projected by it are unaccompanied by fringes of various colours. The correction is usually effected by combining two glasses having differing refractive powers, as, for instance, a convex crown-glass lens, with a concave flint glass, or by enclosing a flint meniscus between two concavo-convex. There are several methods, but the latter is the usual method employed for the rapid class of lenses now so much in vogue (see Lens). For the theory involved in rendering lenses achromatic, see Decomposi- tion OF Light. Acids may be defined as compounds of hydrogen whose atom or atoms of hydrogen are replaceable by metals, or by radicles having metallic characteristics, and the compound resulting from such substitution is termed a salt. Acetic Acid. Formula, HQHjOa ; molecular weight, 60 synonym, purified pyroligneous acid. Prepared from wood by destructive distillation and subsequent purification. There are three commercial strengths. Glacial Acetic Acid contains 99 per cent, of acid and i per cent, of water. Its specific gravity varies from 1-065 to ro66. When cooled to 34 dcgs. F. it solidifies into a mass of crystals, and remains solid till the heat is raised to 48 degs.

Electronic Publishing December 2002 In this review by Ira Gold, he found the D100 to have a great ability to control white balance, fit easily into his hand, and stated “If I were to design my ideal camera, it would look a lot like the D100.” He was impressed with the D100’s high image quality, was easy to navigate controls and compatibility with Nikon’s interchangeable Nikkor lenses. American Photo November/December 2002 In his review of the Nikon D100, Jonathan Barkey points out that the D100 has high image quality, easy to navigate controls, is lightweight, and compatible with Nikon’s interchangeable Nikkor lenses. Barkey was impressed the D100 and said, “The camera is a pleasure to use – with both wonderful handling and top-notch image quality.” Time.com November 2002 In this review of the D100, Wilson Rothman found the camera to have “astounding” picture quality, with easy to navigate controls, similar to Nikon’s film cameras.

    Depth of Field for Digital Images Robin D. Myers Better Light, Inc. In the days before digital images, before the advent of roll film, photography was accomplished with photosensitive emulsions spread on glass plates. After processing and drying the glass negative, it was contact printed onto photosensitive paper to produce the final print. The size of the final print was the same size as the negative. During this period some of the foundational work into the science of photography was performed. One of the concepts developed was the circle of confusion. Contact prints are usually small enough that they are normally viewed at a distance of approximately 250 millimeters (about 10 inches). At this distance the human eye can resolve a detail that occupies an angle of about 1 arc minute. The eye cannot see a difference between a blurred circle and a sharp edged circle that just fills this small angle at this viewing distance. The diameter of this circle is called the circle of confusion. Converting the diameter of this circle into a size measurement, we get about 0.1 millimeters. If we assume a standard print size of 8 by 10 inches (about 200 mm by 250 mm) and divide this by the circle of confusion then an 8x10 print would represent about 2000x2500 smallest discernible points. If these points are equated to their equivalence in digital pixels, then the resolution of a 8x10 print would be about 2000x2500 pixels or about 250 pixels per inch (100 pixels per centimeter). The circle of confusion used for 4x5 film has traditionally been that of a contact print viewed at the standard 250 mm viewing distance.

But industrial research is also a gamble involving decisions over which projects should be pursued and which should be dropped. Ultimately Kodak evolved a conservative management culture, one that responded sluggishly to new opportunities and failed to adapt rapidly enough to market realities. I guess I fall into both groups — I can’t make up my mind! On the one hand, it is useful to stereotype people, to better understand their motivations and desires. On the other hand, how dare anyone put me, or anyone else, in a nice, tidy box! Dividing up the world into “art” types and “science” types is a useful way to look at things. So much of what we do falls neatly into one category or another. Play music? Art. Build a machine? Science. On the other hand, no one exists who lives wholly in the realm of the aesthetic, just as technology alone cannot provide a full life. I’ll be making a special effort to bring these two together, but you have to join me in that effort. If you are an “art” type, try to pay special attention to the “science” bits — they’ll help you achieve the artistic effects that you may have thought were up to luck. Or if you are a “science” type, try to spend time on the “art” topics — they’ll help you get beyond technically profi- cient, but boring, images.

We enjoy looking at unique photos of beautiful places and animals . We use them in magazines and newspapers as a way to complete reports and see advertising photos everywhere . In short , we use photographs in all domains in life . But have we ever asked ourselves : 1(( Is the photography a career or a hobby ?? 2(( What are the differences between amateur and professional photography ?? 3))Which categories of photography are for professionals and which are for amateurs?? 4(( Can an amateur photographer turn into a professional one ?And how ?? 1.What are the differences between an amateur and a professional photographer? 1.1What does the dictionary say ?? An amateur is "A person who does something as a hobby without receiving money for it " While a professional is " an adjective of profession which means doing something as a paid job rather than as a hobby".1 1.2 What does photography say ??2 Professional photographers are people who take photography as a career to earn their living from .While amateurs are those who take it as a hobby and practice it because they enjoy it without thinking of money or wide ranging prestige ,they do it in their leisure just to have fun ,whilst professionals may have to work for long hours to complete their assignments.
