TREE SPECIE PROFILE: Name/s: MALUBAGO (Tagalog) • COTTON-WOOD (English) • HIBISCUS TILIACEUS, TALIPARITI TILIACEUM (Scientific) GENERAL DESCRIPTION: A small tree reaching 8-10 meters with heart-shaped leaves and large yellow gumamela-like flowers. When planted in rows, can be pruned into a tall hedge or when solitary develops a full round crown. PLANTING ZONE: Inland beach forest. Sandy portions of the beach, but away from the water and not directly exposed to strong winds. Can take extreme sun and salt spray. IDEAL SUBSTRATE: Sand or sandy soil. WATER REQUIREMENT: Plant in the rainy season and water only occasionally during the summers until well established. SEED / WILDING AVAILABILITY: September to December. PLANTING RECOMMENDATIONS: Gather wildings (1-6 inch seedlings will be found to grow underneath mature trees in the said months) and nurse in small- medium seedling bags until 2-3 feet high, before planting into the ground. Select a sandy portion with full sun, but protected from harsh winds. Ideal for landscaping. NOTES: When in bloom, flowers are numerous and can be collected to make for exotic table pieces. BELL Department of Integrative Biology, University of California, Berkeley, California 94720 USA Abstract. Environmental variables change over elevational gradients and can isolate plant populations. Three varieties of Hibiscus tiliaceus L. exist on an elevational gradient in Moorea, French Polynesia. These variety’s morphological and chemical characteristics are associated with the differences between their environments. Leaf and flower morphological data were collected and analyzed and found significant differences in petal width and length, anther count, burgundy center color, and leaf width and length between the varieties, particularly between the coastal and mountain types. The increased rainfall and lower temperatures of the high mountains lowered net primary production for the mountain variety as compared to the coastal and mid-mountain varieties. The mid-mountain variety was found to have greater competition for light than the other varieties. These can be linked to the significant size differences in leaves and inflorescence. Chemical differences were analyzed using anti-microbial and anti-cancer bioscreens. Significant differences were found in the anti-microbial bioscreen between the mid-mountain variety, which showed little activity, and both the coastal and mountain varieties. The anti-cancer screen showed increased activity from the coastal and mountain leaves.

Molecular Phylogeny, Revised Higher Classification, and Implications for Conservation of Endangered Hawaiian Leaf-Mining Moths (Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae: Philodoria)1 Chris A. Johns,2,3,5 Matthew R. Moore,4 and Akito Y. Kawahara2,3,4 Abstract: The leaf-mining moth genus Philodoria Walsingham (Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae) is composed of 30 described species, all of which are endemic to the Hawaiian Islands. Philodoria is known to feed on 10 families of endemic Hawaiian host plants, with several species recorded only from threatened or en- dangered hosts. Beyond their dependence on these plants, little is known of their evolutionary history and conservation status. We constructed a molecular phy- logeny of Philodoria to assess validity of its current subgeneric classification and to help guide future work on this threatened Hawaiian lineage. Mitochondrial and nuclear DNA sequences from three genes (CO1, CAD, EF-1α) combining for a total of 2,041 base pairs, were collected from 11 Philodoria species, incorpo- rating taxa from both currently recognized subgenera. These data were analyzed using both parsimony and model-based phylogenetic approaches. Contrary to the most recent systematic treatment of Philodoria, our results indicate strongly that the two currently recognized Philodoria subgenera are not monophyletic and that morphological characters used to classify them are homoplasious. Based on our robust results, we revised the higher classification ofPhilodoria: the subgenus Eophilodoria Zimmerman, 1978 is established as subjective junior synonym of Philodoria Walsingham, 1907. We also present new host plant and distribution data and discuss host range of Philodoria as it pertains to endangered Hawaiian plants. THE CORRELATION BETWEEN HERBIVORY AND MEDICINAL ACTIVITY IN THESPESIA POPULNEA, HIBISCUS TILIACEUS AND HIBISCUS ROSA‐SINENSIS ON MO’OREA, FRENCH POLYNESIA HAYLEY A. COX Integrative Biology, University of California, Berkeley, California 94720 USA Abstract. While secondary compounds are produced by plants in low abundance, these bioactive compounds are essential to human survival for their medicinal applications. These same compounds are crucial to plants, having evolved as defense mechanisms against herbivory. Chief among the theories of plant responses to herbivory, the Optimal Defense Theory (ODT) hypothesizes that plants will allocate defenses in direct proportion to the risk of a particular plant part to herbivory and the value of that part in terms of loss of fitness to the entire plant. Through insect damage assessments and antimicrobial assays, this study investigates the correlation between herbivory and medicinal activity and whether or not the within‐plant ODT is followed in three ethnobotanically useful Malvaceae species, Thespesia populnea, Hibiscus tiliaceus and Hibiscus rosa‐sinensis. All three plant species demonstrated an inverse relationship between herbivory and medicinal activity. Variation in secondary composition data from both insect damage assessment and antimicrobial tests supported the ODT. 2. STATUS OF THE NATIVE FLOWERING PLANTS OF THE HAWAIIAN ISLANDS Warren L. Wagner Derral R. Herbst and Rylan S.N. Yee ABSTRACT Estimates of the total number of native Hawaiian plants are widely divergent because of differences in species concepts; our evaluation suggests 1,200-1,300 native species. Hawaifi has the highest number of can- didate threatened and endangered plants for the United States (31%), with approximately 10% of the native flowering plants already extinct. Although a modern taxonomic review of the Hawaiian flora will reduce the number of taxa considered valid, roughly 50% of the flora will still be considered threatened or endan- gered. Currently 11 Hawaiian plants are listed as en- dangered, one has been proposed as endangered, and the documentation for an additional 9 is currently under review. An evaluation comparing the number of candidate taxa on each island and in each major ecological zone shows that the islands with the highest percentages of candidate taxa are O'ahu (27.3%), followed by Hawai'i (18.3%), Maui (16.8%), and Kauafi (14%). The low num- bers on islands such as Ni*ihau (1.5%) and Kaho'olawe (0.7%) are apparently partly a reflection of the loss of most of the native vegetation prior to study of these islands, and partly because of lower physio- graphic diversity. The ecological zones most severely degraded are mixed mesophytic forest, which harbors nearly 33% of the total candidate taxa, and low eleva- tion rain forest with 24%. Not indicated by this anal- ysis is the severe degradation of lowland vegetation (with 14% of total candidate taxa) and coastal vegeta- tion (with 9.5%) that occurred prior to their scientif- ic study.

Study Area: Coastal forest adjacent to the barachois of Residences la Chaux, Mahébourg Foreword: This document forms part of a baseline study carried out for the Barachois Project (EPCO) in Residences la Chaux, Mauritius and contains a catalogue of terrestrial plants (embryophytes) which are currently present in the site or will be introduced in subsequent project phases. The document is split into two parts: alien and native/endemic species. A map of the project site has been provided alongside the report to divide it into zones (1-6). These are intended to break up the study area into sections to which the distributions of plants included in the study are assigned for ease of locating them in the field. These are referenced in the descriptions for each species. Zones are not intended to document complete distributions but show areas where individual species are most likely to be found based on the authors personal experience at the time of the study.
