ANNUAL REPORT 2014-15

The election to the College Union is conducted in accordance with the provisions contained in the Rules of Election given by the University. The union executive members are elected from the class representatives who are elected through the secret ballot. The union consists of a Chairperson, Vice Chairperson, General Secretary, two University Union Councillors, Arts Club Secretary and Student Editor. All students’ related activities are carried out under the leadership of the College Union, advised and facilitated by the Staff Advisors.

The following programmes were carried out by the union in collaboration with various departments of the college during the academic year 2014-15.

WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY CELEBRATIONS The world environment day is celebrated by the union in collaboration with the Biodiversity club for the academic year 2014-15. As part of the celebrations the members assembled in Santhisthall and cleaned the area for planting new saplings of tree species. The members observed the growth of saplings of few RET species planted last year. Rev. Dr. Vincent Joseph, Principal, Nirmala College, Muvattupuzha inaugurated the function by planting a tree sapling in the area and subsequently made a speech, stressing the importance of conserving flora and fauna to preserve our environment.

INTER DEPARTMENTAL QUIZ PROGRAMME

An Interdepartmental Quiz programme was organized jointly by Biodiversity Club and Nature club in collaboration with college union on 19th September 2014. Students from various departments participated in the quiz programme. The quiz programme was based on rare, endangered and threatened flora and fauna. The programme was conducted with audio visual aids. Dr. Gigi K. Joseph was the moderator for the session. The prizes were distributed by Prof. Laly Mathew, HOD, Dept of Zoology. The biodiversity and nature club members and union members volunteered for the smooth conduct of the programme

SEMINAR ON EFFECT OF NARCOTICS ON MENTAL HEALTH

The college union conducted a seminar on Effect of narcotics on mental health on 25.02.2015 for the students. Famous psychologist Dr. K.S David was the resource person for the seminar. In the meeting of the class representatives it was decided to identify those students engaged in illegal activities and provide counseling to the needy students. One of our faculty member Prof. Josekutty J. Ozhukayil in association with the Janamaithri police, took classes in various schools about narcotics.

EXHIBITION A grand exhibition was conducted by the union on the following days. Students themselves prepared charts on diverse topics such as great writers, poets, film directors, artists, films, great entrepreneurs, funny puzzles and so on. A short film screening was put on which won great applauds as the films were scripted, directed and acted by the students themselves. A letter writing and calligraphy competition was also held on 15th and 16th December which were a new experience for the participants. Sandra Tom (I BSc Maths), Shine Raju (II BA Economics) and Deepthy Prabha (I BA Comm. English) won prizes in letter writing competition and Flemy Babu ( II BA Hindi), Alinta Maria Varghese (III BSc Chemistry) and Minimol P J (I MA Economics) secured prizes in calligraphy competition.

COMMEMORATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS' DAY

Recognition of one's rights is essential for every human being to grow and develop in this competing world. Hence, to give awareness on human rights the college union organized a campaign on Human Rights on 10th December. It was inaugurated by Adv. Johny Methipara, Arbitrator, High Court of and he also made a motivating lecture on human rights. He passed on the message that equality, freedom and elimination of child labour and sexual harassment are crucial for any country's development. The meeting was presided over by the College Principal Rev. Dr. Vincent Nedungattu. Drawing, Painting and collage competition were also steered to put on a stage for the upcoming artists to express their opinion on human rights. Even the winners were selected through voting to enhance the concept of ‘Right to Vote' among young minds.

College Arts Fest, Arangu 2014

Our College has a practice of organizing wide range of cultural activities ever year to cater the creative needs of the students. Various programmes are organized by the collaborative effort of Students Union and Cultural Committee with the objective of bringing out various talents of the students in performing arts, providing the right platform to showcase their talents in various fields like dancing, acting, singing, drawing etc., and inculcating team spirit among the students the overall development of students.

This year college arts fest Arangu 2014 was inaugurated by Mr. Abbas (a dance performer) and the audience was thrilled and excited with his performance. The function was presided over by the principal and staff advisor Dr. James George. Thereafter, varieties of on stage and off-stage events were started in six different stages. Awards and certificates were distributed by the principal.

COLLEGE DAY CELEBRATIONS

The College day celebrations were conducted on 20-02-2015. Chief Guest, Mr. Tovino and team (Mexican aparata, a movie crew) enchanted the audience with their presence. Mr. Jibin Abraham, College Union Chairman presided over the function and Dr. James George, staff advisor, delivered the formal welcome. After the formal function, the main stage witnessed colourful performances of students of each department.

Independence Day celebrations As part of the Independence Day celebrations the College Union conducted an interdepartmental patriotic song competition on 13 August 2014.

ANNUAL ATHLETIC MEET

College Annual Athletic meet was conducted on 2nd December 2014. The chief guest of the day was Sri Raju Paul, winner of best teacher award in sports 2014, of Kerala Government. The Sports meet started with students March Past. Students from all the departments participated in the Mach Past which was also a competition item of this sports meet. The chief guest was delighted by the students’ performance in the March past. He emphasized the importance of students’ involvement in physical activities for maintaining good health. After the formal function, competitions of various categories were conducted and awards of the winners were distributed by the college Principal. Individual champion for the men category was Melvin Varghese of first B.A Hindi and women category was Arya Surendran of first B.A Hindi.

INAUGURATION OF COLLEGE UNION

The College Union in this academic year was inaugurated by Dr. Cyriac Thomas, Former Vice Chancellor, M.G University, Kottayam, Kerala on 1st January 2016. Sri. Asif Ali, Union Chairman presided over the function. Dr. Vincent Joseph, Principal delivered the principal’s address.

WOMENS DAY CELEBRATION .

College union in connection with Women cell conducted Womens Day Celebration on 8 th March 2016 in the College auditorium at 1 pm. The inaugural session was followed by a seminar on “Emotional Management for youngsters”. The programme s tarted with prayer song. Our principal Rev. Dr. Vincent Nedungattu presided over the function. .Dr. Neerada Maria Kurian ,Co- ordinator ,Women Cell delivered welcome speech. The Chief guest of the function was Dr.Sr. Shalu Koikara, Chief Clinical Psychologist, Holy Family Hospital Muthalakodam. She inaugurated the function. After the inaugural function. Dr. Sr. Shalu Koikara lectured on the topic “Emotional Management for youngsters”. Whole programme was winded up at 2.30 pm. The meeting is conclude by the acknowledging remarks of the union vice chairperson.

MONDAY MELODY

To identify and encourage those who are blessed with the melodious voice, Nirmala College Union has initiated a music club. Through its activities, the union has been able to generate a great deal of enthusiasm among the lovers of music. Highlight of the programme is the grand musical concert named “Monday Melody”. This is a musical platform for the singers to express their talents. Best female voice and male voice are selected at this time. Grand finale of Monday Melody 2015- 16 was on 25 th Monday, January 2016. Highly talented students who play instruments and also good vocalists are the strength of this club.

WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY OBSERVANCE 2015

World Environment Day 2015 was observed on 5 th June 2015 in the college by the union. Dr. Sasikala K. Joseph, Associate Professor (Rtd.), Dept. of Zoology, Nirmala College was the resource person. Principal, Rev. Dr. Vincent Joseph inaugurated the programme. Interdepartmental quiz competition and poster designing competitions were conducted as part of the programme.

PLANTING TREE SAPLINGS IN SANTHISTHALL

The college union is regularly maintaining the Santhisthall, a place allotted for the conservation rare, endangered and threatended plants with the support of the Kerala Strate Biodiversity Board, Thiruvanathapuram. This year also the union members cleaned the area, planted a greater number of RET species. Many RET species like Canarium strictum, Cinnamomum sp. Are well surviving in Santhisthall. Faculty ,members and students from Boatay and Zoology department also participated in the tree planting programme

WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION

In collaboration with ‘THE LEAPS’, Kottayam, a nongovernmental organization for nature awareness and conservation, Nirmala College students’ union, Nature Club and Biodiversity Club jointly organized a wildlife photography exhibition in the campus. Principal, Rev. Dr. Vincent Joseph inaugurated the function.

INTER DEPARTMENTAL COMPETITIONS Department vice Competitions were conducted in the college for football, cricket, basketball, shuttle badminton, Chess, Tug of war, Arm wrestling etc. During the year, 2015-16 the Dept of Physical Education and students union of our college organized and conducted. M.G university north zone & inter zone football competitions.

ONAM CELEBRATIONS

Onam was celebrated with great enthusiasm in a traditional manner. The students were in traditional attire and decorated the campus with Flower Carpet. As part of the celebrations competitions like Thiruvatira, Onampattu and making of Flower carpet were organized for the students.

CHRISTMAS CELEBRATIONS

Christmas was celebrated with much joy and enthusiasm by the staff and students. Students showcased their creativity by making and decorating beautiful Christmas trees and Cribs. Best Santa Clause and carol song competitions were also held.

COLLEGE ARTS FEST- REGALIA 2016

The college arts fest- Regalia 2016 was conducted on 14 and 15 January 2016. The arts fest was inaugurated by Master Minon John. (Cine Artist). Various arts competitions were conducted in different stages. All the departments participated in the events with great enthusiasm. The competitions were organized abiding the norms and conditions put forward by M. G. University.

Annual Athletic Meet was conducted on December 22, 2015. The meet was inaugurated by Sree Kumar Circle Inspector of Police Muvattupuzha. Robin Joseph Varghese of 1 B.Com OMSP was selected as a best male athlete and Arathy Lanin of II BSc. Physics selected as a Best female athlete.

All the associations were actively participated in almost the sports day events, which were conducted on 22 nd January 2016. Following students won prize in various event.

WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY CELEBRATIONS

College Union in association with Department of Botany and Zoology conducted World Environment Day Lecture on 16 June 2016. Lecture was delivered by Dr. T.K.A. Nair IAS (Rtd.), former Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister. Painting and poster designing competitions were also conducted for the UG and PG students. The programme was sponsored by the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment. Students demonstrated their artistic talents which were well appreciated by the audience.

INAUGURATION OF THE COLLEGE UNION College Union was inaugurated by Adv. Joice George, M.P on 4 th November 2016. Sri. Abil Rajesh, Chairman, College Union presided over the function.

CLEANING OF ANICADU WTERBODY The union members undertook a major ecofriendly activity by clearing the water logged ‘Anicadu Waterbody with the support of the general public. The activity spread among the society the value of protecting the traditional water sources.

DONATION OF HAIR TO THE CANCER PATIENTS Another humanitarian activity undertaken by the union members was to donate hair to the cancer patients. As many as 32 girl students donated their hair to the cancer patients who had a loss of hair due to chemotherapy.

INTERNATIONAL OZONE DAY CELEBRATION ON 26 SEPTEMBER 2016 The international Ozone day was observed on 26 September 2016. Dr. Shaju Thomas, the noted environmental activist was the Chief Guest. He gave a lecture on “Protection of Ozone Layer”. A Powerpoint presentation and poster making competition was also held on the topic “Ozone Depletion and its ill effects”. The programme was co-ordinated by Dr. Ani Kurian, Assistant Professor in Department of Zoology. The programme was organized with the financial assistance of Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE) and students council.

ANNUAL SPORTS MEET

The annual sports meet was held on 24 January 2017. The meet was inaugurated by Sri. T.C. Mathew, BCCI Vice President. Students from all the departments participated in the Mach Past which was also a competition item of this sports meet. Competitions of various categories were conducted and awards of the winners were distributed. Mr. Melvin Varghese of II B.A. Malayalam was selected as the best male athlete and Ms. Arathy Lanin of II Physics, was the best female athlete.

Heritage Exhibition - Paithrukam

The college, under the initiative of the college union, organized a week long cultural exhibition under the title ‘Paithrukam’ (heritage) during 15-18 November 2016. The exhibition stalls numbering nearly 28 portrayed the cultural richness of our state and creative and innovative ideas of our students. The exhibition was organized to commemorate the 60 th anniversary of the formation of the state of Kerala. The event was well appreciated by staff and students from nearby educational institutions as well as the public.

ONAM CELEBRATIONS

Onam celebration of this year was conducted on 8th September 2016. Flower Carpet, Onam Song and Thiruvathira Competitions were conducted at department wise for the students. Several games were also arranged for the students. Students actively participated in the programme.

CHRISTMAS DAY CELEBRATIONS

Christmas day celebrations of the college was conducted on 22 nd December 2016. Carol Song Competitions were organized at the college level. Students from every department participated in the programme. Rev. Fr. Mathew Chandrankunnel delivered Christmas day message.

FOOD FEST – 02 FEBRUARY 2019 The ‘food fest’ was celebrated on 17 th January 2017. The teachers and students prepared their favourite food items and distributed among staff and students at market prices. The programme was aimed at promoting the art of cooking and the spirit of entrepreneurship among the students.

ONAM CELEBRATIONS

Onam was celebrated with great enthusiasm in a traditional manner. The students were in traditional attire and decorated the campus with pookolam. As part of the celebrations competitions like Thiruvatira, Onampattu and making of Flower carpet were organized for the students.

CHRISTMAS CELEBRATIONS

Christmas was celebrated with much joy and enthusiasm by the staff and students. Students showcased their creativity by making and decorating beautiful Christmas trees and Cribs. Best Santa Clause and carol song competitions were also held.

COLLEGE ARTS FEST- 2017 Under the leadership of arts club and cultural committee the college arts fest was conducted by organizing around 40 cultural competitions. All the departments participated in the events with great enthusiasm. The competitions were organized abiding the norms and conditions put forward by M. G. University.

MUSICAL CONCERT - MONDAY MELODY

To identify and encourage those who are blessed with the melodious voice, music club, Nirmala College conducted ‘Monday Melody’ - the grand musical concert. This was musical platform for the singers to express their talents. Best female voice and male voice were selected at this time.

RESCUE AND RELIEF OPERATIONS FOR FLOOD AFFECTED PEOPLE Kerala has witnessed an unprecedented flood during 15-22 August 2018. Lakhs of people were stranded in their houses. Most of their houses were destroyed. Muvattupuzha town was also inundated and thousands of people were uprooted. They were helpless and begging for help. The college union of the college rose upto the occasion and jumped in to rescue operations. They undertook an adventurous mission to save the lives of hundreds of people who were stranded in houses in the midst of water logging. HERITAGE EXHIBITION ORGANIZED ON 19 & 20 FEBRUARY 2018 The College union organized a heritage exhibition under the title (Samskruthi) on 19 & 20 February 2018 which showcased the cultural treasure of our state. Twenty-two variety stalls were arranged by the students. The exhibition had great educational value to thousands of people, including school and college going students in the neighborhood

CONSTRUCTION OF A HOUSE FOR WIDOW The college student union took up a major extension activity in the form of mobilizing Rs.2,50,000 for constructing a house for a widow at Mudavur, Smt. Sheela Madhu, whose husband was killed in a motor accident. The contribution was of great help to the family as they did not have any means to overcome the crisis. The teachers, non-teaching staff and students generously contributed to the fund.

WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY CELEBRATION The World Environment Day Lecture was delivered by Dr. V.S. Vijayan, the famous environmental activist and former Chairman, Kerala Bio-diversity Board on 12 June 2017. The lecture was held under the auspices of Zoology and Botany Departments with college union and sponsored by Kerala State Council for Science Technology and Environment. The lecture was co-ordinated by Dr. Gigi K. Joseph and Ms. Jaiby Cyriac. The World Environmental Day was celebrated on 12 June 2017, with the financial support of KSCSTE. Dr. V.S. Vijayan, former Chairman of Kerala Bio-Diversity Board inaugurated the event. Dr. George Mathew, Emeritus Scientist, KFRI delivered the key note address. Dr. V.S. Vijayan also inaugurated the Butterfly garden on the occasion.

THREE MINUTES TO FAME The college union proudly introduced a capacity building programme for the first year degree students of the college under the title “Three Minutes to Fame” on 11 October 2017. The students were asked to perform any activity on the stage which could showcase their given talents. HONOURED MR. AJITH SIVAN ON HIS SELECTION TO THE KERALA BLASTERS TEAM The college community got together on 27 July 27 to congratulate Mr. Ajith Sivan, III B.A Economics student of the college, on his selection to the Kerala Blasters team of ISL Football. The footballer has made the entire college community proud. Sri. T.C. Mathew, the Vice President of BCCI was the chief guest on the occasion.

WOMEN EMPOWERMENT LECTURE Under the initiative of the college union and Centre for Women Empowerment, Dr. J. Prameela Devi, Member, State Women’s Commission made a lecture on 11 July 2017 with a view to overcome the gender barrier among girl students.

SAVE A FAMILY PROJECT The college union, staff and students of the college undertook a project to ‘save a family’. They collected among themselves, a sum of Rs.2,50,000 and donated to Smt. Shari Madhu, the widow of an autorickshaw driver who was killed in an accident, to purchase land for constructing house. The amount was handed over to Smt. Shari Madhu on 27-06-2018.

‘NIRMALA HASTHAM’ The students of the college launched a new programme by which they carry an additional lunch box from their homes and donate one to the nearby orphanage. On an average, 80-100 lunch boxes are thus donated to the orphanage, daily.

NO OWN VEHICLE DAY To spread the message of safe driving and environmental consciousness, the staff and students of the college started a healthy practice to shed their own vehicles on the second Tuesday of every month and travel by public transport. The mouse is well appreciated by the media and the general public.

The union consists of a Chairperson, Vice Chairperson, General Secretary, two University Union Councillors, Arts Club Secretary and Student Editor. All students’ related activities are carried out under the leadership of the College Union, advised and facilitated by the Staff Advisors.

COLLEGE UNION INAUGURATION ON 28-09-2018 The activities of the college union 2018-2019 were inaugurated by Sri. Shafi Parambil MLA.

RESCUE AND RELIEF OPERATIONS FOR FLOOD AFFECTED PEOPLE Kerala has witnessed an unprecedented flood during 15-22 August 2018. Lakhs of people were stranded in their houses. Most of their houses were destroyed. Muvattupuzha town was also inundated and thousands of people were uprooted. They were helpless and begging for help. The members of the college union rose up to the occasion and jumped in to rescue operations. They undertook an adventurous mission to save the lives of hundreds of people who were stranded in houses in the midst of water logging. Construction of a House for a Flood Victim – The College Community raised a fund of Rs.404404 for the purpose of constructing a house for a student in the I B.Sc. Botany class, whose house was destroyed in the devastating floods. The department of Botany collected and donated Rs.15500 to Kottapuram integrated Development Society, Kodungallur for Relief work of Kerala Floods 2018 on 30-08-2018. Heritage Exhibition organized on 19 & 20 February 2018

EXHIBITION SAMSKRUTHI 2018-19 The College union organized a heritage exhibition under the title (Samskruthi) on 19 & 20 February 2018 which showcased the cultural treasure of our state. Twenty-two variety stalls were arranged by the students. The exhibition had great educational value to thousands of people, including school and college going students in the neighborhood.

ORIENTATION PROGRAMME FOR THE PARENTS OF THE MENTALLY CHALLENGED The college union has also organized an orientation programme for the parents of the Mentally challenged students on 02 July 2018. The programme was organized in collaboration with ‘Parivar’ (a national platform for the parents of the mentally challenged). Sri. D. Jacob, Chairman, SNAC, Kerala inaugurated the programme. As many as 135 parents were benefited by the programme. CONSTRUCTION OF A HOUSE FOR WIDOW The college community took up a major extension activity in the form of mobilizing Rs.2,50,000 for constructing a house for a widow at Mudavur, Smt. Sheela Madhu, whose husband was killed in a motor accident. The contribution was of great help to the family as they did not have any means to overcome the crisis. The teachers, non-teaching staff and students generously contributed to the fund.

NATIONAL SPORTS DAY CELEBRATION

National Sports Day was celebrated by department of Physical Education. To spread awareness on the importance of sports and physical activities in every individual’s life a ‘kootayottam’( Marathon) was organised. The event started with an oath taking ceremony where students pledged to bring glory to the nation by participating in various sports events.

ANNUAL ATHLETIC MEET

College Annual Athletic meet was conducted by the student’s union and the Department of Physical Education on 23 January 2019. Dronacharya Thomas Mash was the chief guest for the meet. Students from all the departments participated in the Mach Past which was also a competition item of this sports meet. Competitions of various categories were conducted and awards of the winners were distributed. Mr. Ashik M.P. and Kumari Asha K.S were the best male and female athletes

INTER DEPARTMENTAL COMPETITIONS

Department wise Competitions of football, basketball, volleyball, shuttle badminton, cricket, chess, tug of war, arm wrestling etc. were conducted. Many Students participated in all the events with good sportsman spirit.

COLLEGE LEVEL ARTS FEST 2018-19 Under the leadership of college union, arts club and cultural committee, the college arts fest was conducted by incorporating interdepartmental competitions on 40 events. Students participated in the events with great enthusiasm. The competitions were organized abiding the norms and conditions put forward by M. G. University.

SAVE A FAMILY PROJECT The college union, staff and students of the college undertook a project to ‘save a family’. They collected among themselves, a sum of Rs.2,50,000 and donated to Smt. Shari Madhu, the widow of an autorickshaw driver who was killed in an accident, to purchase land for constructing house. The amount was handed over to Smt. Shari Madhu on 27-06-2018.

LOCKS OF HOPE The college union in connection with NSS of the college launched a new programme called “Locks of Hope” by which the students carry out donation of their hair to cancer affected patients.

NO OWN VEHICLE DAY To spread the message of safe driving and environmental consciousness, the staff and students of the college started a healthy practice to shed their own vehicles on the second Tuesday of every month and travel by public transport. The mouse is well appreciated by the media and the general public. FOOD FEST – 02 FEBRUARY 2019 The ‘food fest’ was celebrated on 02 February 2019. The teachers and students prepared their favorite food items and distributed among staff and students at market prices. The programme was aimed at promoting the art of cooking and the spirit of entrepreneurship among the students.

College Day Celebrations MUZHAKKAM 2018-19 was inaugurated by Ms. Honey Rose, Cine Artist. Union Chairman Jo Paul presided over the function. Dr. T.M Joseph, Principal of the College, Dr. James Mathew, Vice Principal and Dr. J. Georgi Neernal, Staff Advicer of the College were felicitated the gathering.
