Q&A How did you become involved in doing research? My research developed out of my final paper for English 598, Mapping London. We were given the freedom to work with any texts which we could use to facilitate an examination of British culture, and so I turned to an area of my own interest, fantasy literature and Tolkien. How is the research process different from what you expected? The research process spread my focus out from the primary texts with which I was working and quickly intermeshed my argument in the larger scholarly community. When attempt- ing to deal with the “geography” of a fantasy world like Middle-earth, as envi- sioned by J.R.R. Tolkien, you’re almost compelled to use this wider definition, even if your only goal is to get an overview of its many features. For Tolkien’s Middle-earth is never just one of physical geography filled with strange lands, weird creatures, and unfamiliar cultures. As Tolkien conceived it over the better part of his life, Middle-earth is also a world rich in its own mythology, history, and languages. This chapter gives an overview of the various worlds that await you in your journey to Tolkien’s Middle-earth, while at the same time familiarizing you with how these realms are covered in the rest of the book. It opens by exploring the questions of where exactly Middle-earth is located and why Tolkien chose the name Middle-earth for his fantasy world. The chapter then looks at Middle- earth as a fantasy realm in light of Tolkien’s ideas on the importance of fairy- tale in our lives. -

101 Book of the Lost Narrator: Re-reading the 1977 Silmarillion as a Unified Text1 Dennis Wilson Wise 1. Introduction In Tolkien’s famous essay about Beowulf and the critics, he chides his colleagues for failing to treat the poem as a literary object; they neglect its aesthetic beauty while snuffling around for philological or genealogical data. In a way, I apply much the same point to readers of Tolkien’s own 1977 Silmarillion. Christopher Tolkien had once written that he treated the 1977 text “of the same order as the writings published by my father himself” (UT 3), a “completed and cohesive entity” rather than “a complex of divergent texts interlinked by commentary” (1). Christopher Tolkien later distanced himself from this position, deeply regretting that he “attached no importance” to his father’s concerns about presentation (LT I xi) and thereby left for The Silmarillion “no suggestion of what it is and how (within the imagined world) it came to be” (xii). Understandably, Tolkien scholars followed this path, discounting The Silmarillion for the much more authentic-seeming History of Middle-earth. Additionally, they see the 1977 text, though powerful in places, as a product rife with flaws, uneven in structure and detail, sadly heterogeneous in style, and furthermore marred by the editor’s unavoidable hand. I wish to present an alternative reading of the 1977 text. Like Gergely Nagy, but for profoundly different reasons, I believe that The Silmarillion, “exactly as it stands in the 1977 text, is a profound work” (“Adapted” 35), a narrative and rhetorical masterpiece. I do not value The Silmarillion for its hint of avant-texts or textual prehistory, its echoes of oral folklore transformed into written forms. -

still recall the shock I experienced on first reading Tolkien, a little more than ten years ago. I had never encountered literary fantasy before, and I was startled by "The Hobbit", stunned by "The Lord of the Rings". At that time, before the cult, this was still possible; but I wonder how many readers come so unprepared and feel the same amazement. The ambush is sprung; his reputation, for good or ill, precedes him now. "The Lord of the Rings" - and inevitably any discussion of Tolkien's work is dominated by "The Lord of the Rings" - has paid the penalty of such fame, and become a trilogy more known about than known. The banners have gone up: readers are required to be for it or against it, not allowed simply to enjoy it or not. It has become a symbol: to its detractors}of an intellectual and emotional flaccidity in our society; to some of its partisans, no less damagingly, of an 'alternative society' where Tolkien himself would have been very ill at ease, "The Lord of the Rings" is judged on its philosophy, its politics, its relevance to current preoccupations - on anything rather than its qualities as a work of literature. It has become hard to see the book with fresh eyes, although that is what I have tried to do: not - God forbid - to advance a new appreciation, but to rediscover under the accretion of controversy and theory the books that Professor Tolkien wrote, and to attempt to understand what in them has provoked such a response. "The prime motive was the desire of a tale-teller to try his hand at a really long story that would hold the attention of readers, amuse them, delight them, and at times excite them or move them deeply." (Foreword of Lord of the Rings) Thus wrote Tolkien himself, in the foreword to the second edition of "The Lord of the Rings".
