Format.......................................................................................... 42 4 CENTENNIAL LEAGUE ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION HISTORY In 1961, one hundred years after Kansas became the thirty‐fourth state of the Union, the administrators of several high schools in Topeka and the surrounding area formed the Centennial League. Competition in athletics started in 1962. Frank Colaw, principal of Seaman High School, was the unofficial leader of the founders, which included principals W.A. McElroy of Washburn Rural, Barney Hays of Highland Park, Leo Denny of Atchison, and Father Raymond Davern of Hayden. Tony Coffin of Haskell and Claude Reynolds of Highland Park also participated in much of the discussion preparatory to establishing the new league. All the schools forming the Centennial League except Hayden ‐ which was independent ‐ had been members of other leagues. Atchison and Highland Park were in the Northeast Kansas League, along with Lawrence, Leavenworth, and Ottawa; Washburn Rural, Seaman, and Haskell were members of the Jayhawk League which also included Holton, Wamego, and Osage City. Both the Jayhawk and the NEKL broke up when the Centennial League was established. In addition to the founding schools ‐ Atchison, Hayden, Haskell, Highland Park, Seaman, and Washburn Rural ‐ Shawnee Heights participated in 1962‐63, but did not compete until the following year.
